The farthest you can see with the naked eye is two point four
million miles.
 
It's False – The farthest the naked eye can see
is two point four million light years or 140 million million million miles!
This is the distance to the Andromeda Galaxy. You can see it fairly easily
as a dim, large grey "cloud" in a clear night sky.

The chalk in the white cliffs of Dover is made up of the fossils
of tiny animals?
 
It's False . In fact all chalk is formed from the
bodies of tiny algae called cocolithophores that lived in the sea 70 million
years ago in a time called the Cretaceous.

Scientists have brought 250 million year old bacteria back to
life
 
It's True – In October, 1999 bacteria known as
B. permians (bacillus) found in sea salt beneath Carlsbad, New Mexico,
were revived after being in suspended animation (encased in a hard-shelled
spore) for an estimated 250 million years.

Beards are bad for your health
 
It's True –
Men who shave regularly are healthier, and have sex more often than their
hairier counterparts, a recent study has shown. Following 2,438 men from
South Wales, researchers at the University of Bristol found that men who
shave at least once a day are more likely to be married, have better jobs
and are less likely to smoke whilst bearded men were also found to have
a 70% higher chance of having a stroke.

Scientists recently discovered a plant 43,000 years old
 
It's True – in 1997 scientists studying King's Holly (Lomatia
tasmanica) a type of shrub from the desert of Tasmania, found it to be
over 43,000 years old. This was achieved with the aid of a nearby fossil
from the same plant ! [Additional information - The plant is triploid
(3x chromosomes) so is sterile. It spreads by root suckering so the same
specimen has been growing for all that time].

the weight of the plane would increase because the force exerted on the
floor of the aircraft by the passengers as they jumped would actually
increase the weight of the plane momentarily, not decrease it.

It's False
– The sex of a baby is determined by the father who carries an X
and a Y chromosome meaning he can make sperm carrying either X or Y chromosomes.
If the mothers egg – which only carry X chromosomes – are
fertilised by a sperm carrying a Y then you get a boy !

Mice use signposts to find their way around !
 
It's True
– scientists at oxford university have found that mice often leave
piles of seeds, twigs or shells to help them find their way home in confusing
places like large fields of crops. Leaving visual signals like this is
thought to be safer than scent marking which a predator could pick up.
