Question

Catherine, Hemel Hempstead asked:

What exactly is robotic mapping and how does it work?

Answer

Alan -   I think you're referring to something called Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping, sometimes called SLAM.  Itís amazing technique where robots can estimate their position and both localise and, if you like, build a map of the environment that they're in at the very same time.
