A 1948 autopsy specimen from a woman aged 53 years, who had had difficulty in swallowing for about eight years before her death. X-ray had shown a much over-distended oesophagus with a narrow functional stricture at the cardiac orifice. She was treated by bougie dilatation with improvement, but suffered from intermittent bouts of respiratory infection. She was found after a fit of coughing, cyanosed and unconscious, clearly choking. She died almost at once.
