Title: How to deal with conspiracy theorists
Post by: Craftybutterfly on 18/08/2015 02:56:32
I had someone in a group I'm in on Facebook say "I'm not a (insert presidential candidate here) Lover. Hes pro government forced vaccination. So I've read. Thats a deal breaker for me."

I responded with a deflection about the freedom not to go to public school but I have to wonder how anyone gets that far down the rabbit hole of crazy? Sadly I know at least 10 hard core anti-vaxxers with varying degrees in believing in other science. Is there any way to stop them from feeding off each other's speculation presented as fact?

No. It's impossible. They have a twisted sense of reasoning. For example; all knowledge in science comes from observation which is obtained either directly as in astronomy, i.e. we observe the stars with various kinds of telescopes, or by experiment, such as launching space probes and traveling to the planets or by experiments done by individual scientists or teams of scientists. For example; the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) cost 4.4 billion dollars to build. There are about 3,000 people who work there. So its impossible for a single person to repeat the experiments and confirm the findings obtained there. But conspiracy theorists will say things "Do you believe everything that you're told?" and think that it's a valid argument. And that's how distorted their thinking is. Some people can't even understand basic physics but will claim that a rocket engine can't work in a vacuum when in fact it takes a very trivial understanding of Newton's laws of physics to understand their basic operation. It goes on forever.

The simple - indeed only mutually safe - response to antivaccinators is not to allow your children to associate with theirs. By correspondence (you certainly wouldn't want to visit them, for fear of passing on a disease to which you are resistant) you might ask them why there have been no cases of smallpox in the last 35 years - I'd certainly be interested to know how such a devastating disease was eradicated by pure conspiracy with no evidence of vaccine effectiveness. Then consider poliomyelitis. Or ask who Jenner was actually conspiring with: or was he a retrospective invention by the conspirators?

I've read that Elvis is alive and doing gigs on the Moon. Of course they aren't broadcast, because the CIA actually killed a Soviet agent who worked as an Elvis impersonator, but as Eisenhower was actually Stalin's illegitimate brother, the Russians offered a moon lander to hide the real Elvis to prevent the truth leaking out - you wouldn't want the US public to know they had been paying to idolise a Commie - then pretended that the lander had crashed which is why they lost contact with it.....And it must be true because the number of UFOs seen in Memphis has declined to zero since he "died", so the Little Green Men no longer have to disguise themselves as humans.....And it says so in the newspaper!

I found a theory that said all the conspiracy theories are a smoke screen to cover up what really going on in the world!

So there are conspiracy theories about conspiracy theories!

just shows you how many screws there are loose out there.

Although I am an anti vaccer myself (within reason.. some are fine smallpox, yellow fever the like) I just wish the health service were more open about the side effects and the long term problems they might cure.. the MMR gave me life long IBD but under control I prefer this to being infertile or the rest from what I have been protected from.
