I failed on three, the worst was to say that clouds were water vapour, I knew of course that they are water droplets and ice.
the other failiures were a matter of language I could not agree that the Sun derived its heat by the combustion of hydrogen (a chemical process!)

I got a D. at 62.5%...

What did everybody else get?

92.5% three failed, but I don't agree completely with the explanations, because I think some questions can have more than one single interpretation, (or it's my not perfect knowledge of the language).

Hey !!..at least I'm man enough to display my score !!

Like Dave said above ....NOT having a physics degree does not have it's uses !!!

Now I have all the answers I can study up and take it again later and see how I do!! MAybe my students might have hope after aLL>> I honestly thought I would score around 30 percent! I did alot better then I thought!! TOOK ME A FLIPPIN HOUR TO TAKE THE TEST AS I HAD TO READ THINGS SO MANY TIMES BEFORE I UNDERSTOOD THE QUESTIONS.....YIKES!!At least I am women enough to tell you I beat the pants off you Sir!...LOL You better bone up and retake your test... I thought that with three more or less wrong I Would have been one of the worst in this elementary test, I have no education apart from three years at technical school during the war when I thought the level of science teaching was abysmaly low as we were only being trained to become technicions at the local paper making plant.
If I had a degree in physics I would not have dared to admit such a score.

Syhrum,
I missed the cloud one to as I was on the fence with dust particals and Ice but it through me when it said "primarily made of," something like that! I never counted how many I missed but did get 60% I guess I like that,,, I amnot good at science things but am facsinated by it! will count them later and see what ones I missed.. again and how many!

Yes...you did great...in fact you ALL did bloody great !!! *grumble mumble grrrrrrr snarll * [:)]

Karen Mam...there is NO way I am going to bone up !!...Oh NO !..too much like going back to school !! [;)]...and I would not understand it anyway..

The only thing I can say in my defence is that my whole education was ruined by my trying to concentare after a couple of hours sleep....It's not easy being at school at 8:30am when you just went to sleep at 5am !!...pretty tough for a kid !

But hey !!...I could have lied and said I got 90%..but I would have only been fooling myself and no one would have believed it anyway !!

So, well done toy you all..

I posted it knowing full well i'd get bottom grade. I took my Physics exam 5 times (truthfully)....never passed it !!

Quote from NATURE

"By using the balloon to travel the first few dozen kilometers, bypassing the area where gravity is strongest and the air thickest, the Cambridge team will not have to use as much fuel"

This article concerns a plan to launch a rocket from a balloon that has elevated it to 35 Km, although the reduction in air resistance is very welcome the reduction in gravity is negligible.
Seems the eminent NATURE referees would have missed out on one physics question

OH GOSH!  62.5% I can't believe it...I did horrible.  After re-reading the questions...I should've at least managed 4 more to be correct...geez...I would've failed in school???  Oh, I forgot, I would've studied before the test...and pray, sweat, cried, that I didn't do this poorly...LOL  I loved certain things about physics...but preferred experimental science to physics/chemistry

I got 77.5%, although a fair number of answers were a matter of debating with myself how the question itself was to be interpreted (but then, it is usually the case that passing exams is as much about understanding the psychology of the people setting the exam as it is about knowing the facts).

I also got three of them wrong. (92.5%)

I disagree with two of them, as I often do with true/false quizes.  I think they are being overly simplistic with the actual statements, then being overly wordy on their explainations.  I refused to answer number eight as it was unclear in its meaning.

I rather get the impression that those who class themselves as technicions get higher scores than academics, could it be that they have to try harder to keep their jobs and have to re-learn a whole lot of new facts every decade

"Precious And Few"

(As recorded by Climax)
WALTER D. NIMS

Precious and few are the moments we two can share
Quiet and blue like the sky I'm hung over you
And if I can't find my way back home (can't find my way)
It just wouldn't be fair (wouldn't be fair)
Precious and few are the moments we two can share.

Baby it's you on my mind, your love is so rare
Being with you is a feeling I just can't compare
And if I can't hold you in my arms (can't hold you oo)
It just wouldn't be fair (wouldn't be fair)
'Cause precious and few are the moments we two can share.

And if I can't find my way back home (can't find my way)
Ah, it just wouldn't be fair (wouldn't be fair)
'Cause precious and few are the moments we two can share
(Precious and few are the moments we two can share.)

Precious and few are the moments we two can share-arr
Quiet and blue like the sky I'm hung over you-oo
And if I can't find my way back home (la la la oo)
Ah, it just wouldn't be fair (wouldn't be fair)
'Cause precious and few are the moments we two can share.

(Precious and few are the moments we two can share.)

Have a fair amount of wind, and some heavy, but intermittent, rain.  Next door's garage got flooded (inadequate drainage).

Please tell me the correct/traditional abbreviation for picture.  Would it be pic. or pict.?

Although the word 'Pict' comes from the same Latin root, it refers to a tribe of people who lived in the British isles (commonly associated with Scotland), who were renowned for their body painting (in lieu of clothing).

The more common abbreviation for a picture would be 'pic'.

Hi George!  While I agree with you that 'piccy' is not an acronym, I disagree that it's a dimunitive of the abbreviation.  Isn't the definition of diminutive  "something smaller than the regular size".

Since pic would be the more common/traditional abbrev. for picture, 'piccy' would not be diminutive of pic. I would be more inclined to call 'piccy' an alternate abbreviation for picture.

I really don't know if I'm making sense or not, I can't sleep and I'm in an argumentative mood.  Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.[:D] I know you will.[;)]

Don't need to be so apologetic about being in 'argumentative mode' – no-one is taking it serious, and a little bit of light argument I can do as well as anyone.[:)]

Diminutive does not refer to the size of the word, but the implied size of the thing being described:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminutive
quote:

A diminutive is a formation of a word used to convey a slight degree of the root meaning, smallness of the object named, intimacy, or endearment. It is the opposite of an augmentative.

Diminutives are common in most dialects of English. Terms such as "undies" for underwear and "movie" for "moving picture" are frequently heard terms in English. (Note that analogous expressions in languages in which diminution is a regular part of the grammar would not be called diminutives.) Common diminutives are:

  • -ey/-ie/-y: dearie, doggy, kitty, cookie

  • -ling: duckling, gosling

  • -ette: diskette, cigarette, kitchenette

  • -let: piglet, eyelet

Further examples – Georgie is a Diminutive of George, and Vodka is a Diminutive of Voda (meaning 'water') – in neither case is the diminutive actually a shortening of the word.

I should've known you were going to pull out the Wikipedia Big Guns.  I'm still not quite ready to throw in the towel just yet. There is something about your original sentence (below)that just doesn't sit well with me.

quote:
'piccy' is a diminutive of an abbreviation, not an acronym.

In your statement below,
quote:
Diminutive does not refer to the size of the word, but the implied size of the thing being described:

is the thing being described the word picture?  If so, shouldn't the sentence read "Piccy is a diminutive of picture, not an acronym."? Wouldn't using both diminutive and abbreviation in this sentence be redundant? Ok George, I don't think I'm making very much sense (I'm getting very sleepy), so I'm afraid I'm going to have to say UNCLE for tonight.  Good grief I hope I don't sound stupid.  Again, feel free to correct me.[:)]

Firstly, none of this is being serious, so there is absolutely no reason to feel that you would sound stupid (at least not any more stupid than my raising the matter in the first place).  In any case, Gaia, with her background in editing journals, would no doubt walk all over both of us with regard to anything to do with usage of the English language (not that I would not put up a fierce struggle [:)] - I don't go down without a fight [:)]).

You are ofcourse correct that if 'piccy' is a diminutive of 'pic', it may also be regarded as a direct diminutive of 'picture', although there are ofcourse other ways of forming a diminutive of 'picture' that are not diminutives of abbreviations of 'picture', for instance, one could talk of a 'picturette', which would be a diminutive of 'picture' but not a diminutive of an abbreviation of picture.

Thus while stating that 'piccy' is a diminutive of an abbreviation is not a tautology, you may be right to suggest that the extra information contained in that description is surplus to immediate requirements of Alberto's question.

The reason why I highlighted it as a diminutive of an abbreviation was because Lo had referred to it as an acronym, and thus referred to the contraction of the word, and I was highlighting that aside from the fact that it was a diminutive rather than a direct contraction, the contraction itself was merely an abbreviation, and not an acronym.

George - Thank you for satiating my need to argue and for giving my vocabulary a workout.  I guess I should be grateful that Gaia didn't jump in and put us both in our places.  The first time I ever heard of the term 'piccy' was on this forum and was used by Neil.  I think we should just call 'piccy' a NEILISM and be done with it.[:D][^][:D]

I hate questions that aren't defined enough. I hate when all the variables aren't told so the question really could be true or false depending on certain variables which the questions doesn't state. So annoying.
