Title: Friday 13th is considered unlucky because...
Post by: DoctorBeaver on 05/06/2007 09:56:34
On Friday 13th 1307, Phillip IV of France ordered that hundreds of Knights Templar be arrested - including their leader Jacques DeMolay - on charges of heresy. They were tortured until they confessed and 3 Grand Masters, DeMolay among them, were subsequently burned to death.

Many scholars believe this is the origin of Friday 13th being considered unlucky.

The number 12 has long had significance in human culture, from the Zodiac, to the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 apostles, and the use of 12 in many old numbering systems (remembered in the number of inches in a foot, the number in a dozen), etc.  Thus it would follow that one in excess of a dozen would be inappropriate in some way.

There was ofcourse also the bakers dozen, which was unfortunate for the baker, as it was a free loaf he had to give away to ensure he did not short change the customer.

Friday (although not the 13th) was supposed (although there are contractions in that) to have been the day that Jesus was crucified.

In more modern terms, anything manufactured on a Friday is supposed to have a higher probability of failure as the guys on the production line have their mind more on the coming weekend than on the job.

George - 12 does indeed have significance in many esoteric beliefs. However, it's not that there are 12 zodiacal signs, 12 apostles, 12 tribes of Israel, etc. In fact, it's exactly the opposite.

The number 12 has had mystical significance since far earlier. It is more likely that those groupings of 12 came about as a result of the significance of the number.

For instance, the Babylonians (who used the base-12 numbering system) were responsible for the 12 zodiacal signs. It is probable that they deliberately constructed 12 patterns from the stars to fit in with their numbering system. In Babylonia and Rome 12 was considered to be a lucky number associated with completion and perfection.

In Gematria, the Hebrew word for "He, Himself" (i.e. referring to God) is הוא which equates to 12. 12 Apostles + Christ = 13 people. The Hebrew words אחד (one) and אהבה (love) = 13. Therefore it is very likely that Jesus brought 12 others to him for that very reason (although, previously, some Jewish sects had considered 13 unlucky as the Hebrew word for death begins with the 13th letter of the Hebrew alphabet).

There are many other occult significances of both 12 & 13, but I won't bore you with them here.

I did not doubt that (the English/Germanic numbering system clearly has evidence of early base 12 influence, just as the French has a base 20 significance, and both also have traces of base 7 significance).  I was merely using those examples as easily understood consequences of the early significance of the number 12, not that they caused that significance.

I think that I heard somewhere that, according to Biblical mythology, Adam & Eve were thrown out of Eden on the 13th day of creation, that also happened to be a Friday.  I'm not certain about this tidbit, though.

Yeah, nothing in Genesis about that.

I wouldn't expect there to be. I checked the Pseudepigrapha, the Apocrypha, The Book of Jasher, the Koran, & several other ancient texts.
