I've just realised, after looking on Wiki that you are right, you call them pancakes [???] [::)] [;)] Americans [;)]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flapjack
-
my grandpa called them flapjacks. otherwise i would have been confused.
-
Here is a recipe from American womans cookbook from early 1900's!
Apple Flap Jacks
1 tablespoon shortening 1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 eggs 1 cup apples,chopped fine
1 1/2 cups sifted flour 1 cup milk
Cream shortening and sugar, and add beaten eggs, flour sifted with baking powder and cinnamon, and the chopped apples. Then add milk gradually to make a medium batter. Bake on griddle as for ordinary pancakes and serve in an overlapping row around a platter of pork chops or serve separately with roast pork, either hot or cold. Cooked apples may be used with batter in the same way. Makes 16.
-
That recipe is more what your grandpa called flapjacks us too here in california.. at least at my end of the woods. LOL

These look like oatmeal bars..etc.. Ours look way different! Flat round griddle breaded goodness! LOL
-
now i'm hungry. and i miss my grandpa's pancakes. or flapjacks. or whatever.
-
They are so easy to make Missy!
-
he had some sort of secret ingredient... nobody can make popcorn, chili, or mashed potatoes like he did either. we should have made him tell us...
-
and missy is my cousin. lol. she can't make them right either
-
I can boil an egg
-
oh... good job! i actually, um... can't. but i cook other things very well!
-
It's very easy to boil an egg, it says so in my Cooking, For Dummies book [;)]
-
it's always still runny in the middle when i do it!
-
Leave it for at least 10 minutes after the water begins to boil not before!
-
thanks karen
-
I was told it depends on how quickly it drys. So if you scoop an egg out of the boiling water look how quickly the water evaporates off the shell.............although I could be completely wrong [;)]
-
how quickly is it supposed to dry though?
-
Thats an interesting method! Me grandpa was a chef me grandma a cook me mom a cook and that is interesting.. you know they do dry pretty fast when they are done.. you can almost see the water evaporate as you pull them out! Thats cool I will have to try it!
-
ok so pretty quickly. and um... i wanna go live with karen now...
-
That would make a good science project do an undercooked egg and a well cooked one but watch for the speed of evaporation and check it a couple of times for accuracy!

Well as I said I could well be wrong [;)] I can boil an egg really easily, but that's probably because I forget about it and then remember 10 minutes later [;)]
ok so pretty quickly. and um... i wanna go live with karen now...
You can try and guess. You'll see when you first pull the egg out how fast the water evaporates, then when you do it again it should be quicker [:)]
-
Might be fun to try Daniel.. and we would all learn a new method! YAYYYYYYY! It is always niceto see how others cook!
-
ok... i tried one karen's way and it came out ok. i tried one dan's way.. and... well... i think i took it out to look at the evaporation too much. it didn't work out so well...
-
LOL LOL.. Hee hee hee! LOLGood job..
-
the coconut would be an interesting twist Bored Chemist...hmmm, may try that...
EASY TO MAKE SNICKERDOODLES

1. Cream the shortening, sugar and egg with electric mixer until smooth.
2. Sift flour, onto a wax paper, about 1 1/2 cup.
3. Measure flour, salt, and baking powder into sifter and sift over a small bowl.
4. Add the sifted ingrediennts into the sugar and shortening and egg mixture and mix well with a wooden spoon.
5. Add vanilla and stir again.
6. Dough should be soft and easy to handle. Add a little more flour (about a tabelspoon or so) if dough sticks to your hands.
7. Preheat oven to 400F. Set out cookies sheets lined with foil 8 combine suger and cinnamon into a small bowl and set out side
9. Roll pieces of dough into the size of a small jawbreaker. Roll the ball into the sugar cinnamon mixture. Place on a foil line cookie sheet, three across and five down. Place the rack in the middle of the oven.
10. Bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly brown. Cookies will puff up and then will flatten down and have a crispy top.
11. Let the cookies cool on the rack
