Title: Hanging your vashing ist verboten!
Post by: DoctorBeaver on 01/07/2007 08:47:03
Taken from The Banbury & District Review, June 29 2007

A pensioner is outraged after being told she cannot peg out her washing.

Margaret Leach, 73, is a resident of sheltered housing scheme Fircroft Private Apartments in Banbury.

James Tipping, chairman of the apartments company, who lives on the site, has told residents that hanging out washing is unacceptable.

Wire has been wrapped around the one rotary drier on the patio so it cannot be used.

Mrs Leach said "I've used the drier since I first moved in a year ago & no-one's coplained about it"

"Surely everyone has the right to choose whether they have a washing machine or a washer-drier."

As reported in the national press a couple of weeks ago, people are returning to hanging out washing thereby contributing towards saving the planet in an effort to halt global warming.

Mr Tipping said "We are trying to upgrade Fircroft Court for everybody"

He added "Mrs Leach is the only person who uses the drier."

However, we found another resident who uses it but does not want to be named.

I am getting heartily sick of all this interference in people's lives. Why can't people just let others get on with what they want to do? If no-one had complained about that woman's washing, why make her stop hanging it out?

And good morning Karen  [:)]

I happen to know that there is a local regulation (actually not only in this town but in many localities in Belgium) that forbids hanging out the washing on Sundays and public holidays.
This is because of the homing pigeons.  Racing homing pigeons is still popular over here (though not as popular as let's say 50 years ago).  Apparently the washing streaming in the wind frightens the pigeons, and the do not come in as fast as their owners want them to.  Nowadays the law or regulations is rarely enforced, partly because the popularity of the sport is diminishing, partly because of the awareness that a lot of things associated with public holidays should be banned as well.

That's probably more exciting than sitting at the side of the road waiting for your bird to sing. Or betting on where in a field a cow will poop (both true)

Hanging out washing seems (in European terms) to be a peculiarly British habit.  I don't recall it being very common elsewhere in Europe (again, very much more difficult when one lives in flats, which is less common in Britain than elsewhere); and as Eric has suggested, I think there are ordinances in various countries (I would not be surprised if Switzerland was high on the list) where it is illegal.  My mother (of Hungarian origin) always considered it vulgar to hang your underwear to dry in public.

Weird, OK, I ususally use a tumble drier but that's because I'm lazy. If you don't do that (and 100 years ago nobody did) and you don't hang things in the open air, how do you dry them? Strung up indoors? Hanging them outside is certainly effective and it's green too.

Good grief.. I have hung laundry my whole life.. inside as well as outside I have a wooden rack that you stand in your tub load it up and it dries pretty quickly.. I love my towels in the dryer.. makes them soft but crisp clean line dried sheets are great! LOL smell wonderful unless some nutty neighbor decides to burn papers while your drying.. then thats the pits!

Yes, we would hang things indoors (often on a line strung over the bathtub).

Have a washer dryer myself, and have never hung things outside (where something could not be tumble dried, then hung it up inside - don't need to start panicking at the first sight of clouds over the horizon).

I also remember that when I was a kid, the washing (at least the "white") was spread open on a lawn for bleaching.  You don't see this any more, but it must have been current practice, on an industrial scale even well in the 20th century.

The whites are great hung out as it really does help keep them whiter..

My mother in law remembers her mum in a weekly race to get the washing out onto the line - it was a way of showing how well you were in control of your household, and the pride assiciated wiht it. At this time, washing was only done weekly due to the paucity of powders etc, and that I guess it was so damn hard to wash stuff by hand.

Here in Germany, washing is hung out still, though only sheets, and not on a Sunday. There is no lawn mowing allowed after 6pm on a Saturday either as well as any number of things that although not verboten, are taboo. This perhaps sounds draconian, but when you can actually sit out in peace and quiet and not be continually buzzed by machinery, it's rather nice.

I was thinking about motorbikes the other day. There are a great many around here due to the twisty nature of the mountain roads. You can hear them for miles (km's). I was calculating how many people have to listen to the noise from a single bike whether they want to or not. If a biker is going on a day trip, 100km would not be an over-estimate of distence travelled, in fact, probably something of an under-estimate. I'm estimating that those within 1km on either side of the road could hear the bike (again, an under-estimate in this environment). The total area in which you can hear the bike is therefore 200km2. The mean population density in Germany is 239 / km2. This means that this one bike will influence the audible environment almost 50,000 people. And this is one bike, on one road doing one journey in one day.

That is an amazing .. LOL Good calculations. I wish there was a little more quiet here on the weekends but its really not too bad most of my neighbors do theirs in the early hours and wake you up rather then disturb the relaxing evening! LOL

The area where I live is a favourite with bikers too.
