I particularly like the 3D tube thing. It really looked as if it was coming out of my screen & that I could actually grab it

I can't see it myself, even the boxes look like different colours to me.

if you import it into paint and use the tool thats looks like a dropper which allows you to picks colours from the picture it turns out that a & b are exactly the same colour weird but true.

That checkerbox shadow does me in! No matter how you look at it, the squares look totally different until you use the colour picker to check it

I dissected the picture in adobe photo shop and put the two squares next to each other and I'm still flummoxed

Despite what the computer says..they ARE different shades of grey !!...Do you think it could be a computational error ?...I know that sounds far fetched but they ARE different...but the computer sees them as the same .

I just used an HTML colour picker & got the same value for both squares - 6B6B6B

Michael - I used Adobe too. I cut a section of the darker-looking square & slid it onto the lighter 1. Even when it was right next to it, it looked different. As I slid it onto the square, however, it merged perfectly. WAAAAAAAAAAAA! [:(!]

How can they deceive the eyes so ?...When I use my eyes I believe I see two different shades.....because I do !!!... Even when placed by side those squares are different !..The computer can not physically 'see' it as we do..It screws with your head doesn't it ?...

I too have used my computer to read the colour values, same result as you guys....... but...it is so frustrating because we know that we indeed do see them differently with our own eyes !! the computer does not,....so despite what ever the computer tells me...I can see for myself that they are different

Neil - I don't think that can be the cause. As I said, I cut a section of the darker square & slid it onto the lighter 1 & it merged perfectly. If it were a computational error that would not have happened.

I just tried something really clever!
I made a 2-tone video matte with the darker colour as the central mask & superimposed it over a still image. I set the matte so that the central mask would be transparent. I then made another mask with the lighter shade as the mask but kept the transparency settings from the original. It was still transparent.
As a final check, I made a 3-tone matte - the lefthand 3rd as the darker shade, righthand 3rd as the lighter, and separated them with green. I chose 1st the darker & then the lighter as the transparent colour with the luminosity, RGB colour, & hue/saturation tolerances all set to 1%. In both instances all I could see was the green.

And your conclusion is that they are both green ?[;)]

BTW, a while ago I posted (on another thread) a link to another site I like - and then the site promptly went unavailable for several weeks.  However, I'm glad to say it's back online again, so now I can once more watch my favouritist ever video:
