Prompted by the thread on Americans I was wondering if anyone can come up with a good reason as to why dark beer tends to give me a much nastier hangover?

Hi Tim,I don't drink...never have....I just don't like the taste....but....should I start so that I can answer this question ? I'm a strong believer in empirical study. I hope you find someone without a hangover to answer this question.

Ha! Hangovers - i never get them, and i drink plenty!
My guess is that dark beer contians more substances (chemicals) and your body reacts adversely to one or more of them.
I do tend to drink more spirits than beer (or wine for that matter), and always drink lots of water before going to bed (if i remember). I may end up feeling knackered from the night out having only slept for a few hours, but never a headache and usually bright as rain the next day!

Have you noticed how mixing beverages makes hungover worse.... And, say, pure VODKA is quite benign it that sence!
Does this mean that it`s not alcohol (or not only alcohol) that causaes hangover.

It is not only the alcohol, however, the alcohol is always a common denominator in a hangover. The hangover is supposed to be caused by swelling blood vessels at a certain point in the alcohol-reaction of your body. That doesn't seem to do the hangover justice, particularly why there is so often stomach upset along with the headache.
I know that some beers cause bad hangovers, so I don't drink those. They are major brands, so millions have no such reaction. It's pretty complicated.
Vodka gives me a hangover too, but gin is better. Go figure.

I thought the reason for the hangover had to do more with dehydration. And did you notice how expensive wines don't give you a hangover but cheap ones do? And qpan, I didn't get hangovers when I was younger either. Didn't start till I was about 45 or 50. OK doctor Chris, how come the hangovers only manifested in my senior years?????

Yes, dehydration is a factor, and one can drink water and mitigate a hangover, but the hangover still happens, and one doesn't get a hangover from being dehydrated.

I started drinking at 16 and never had a hangover until about 20 when I noticed that certain beers and wines, some of which I had already been drinking, would make me extremely ill. It was suggested to me by someone in the industry that my bad reaction could have been due to the chemicals they began using to speed the aging process. They also use some nasty chemicals to clean the vats.

I have a possible solution! Here is my sorry tale:
I moved to California a while back. I noticed almost immediately that I was getting sick through alcohol way more than I ever had before. I chatted to a German girl who'd moved over at the same time and she had the same problem. She'd presumed it was the beer, but I was drinking G&T most of the time, so it was the same stuff I'd been having in the UK. I spent ages thinking about what on earth could be the reason for my sudden intolerance and finally came up with this:
I was in San Diego - perfect perfect weather over there. This meant that I was eating a lot less, especially in the evening, (seems that most of my food intake goes into keeping me warm) and very little fat. When I came back over here, I was a little horrified at the big lumps of butter that my mum was slinging around the place, but quickly got back into the swing of it. My intolerance for booze vanished (immediately - the weekend after I got back I went on a huge bender and woke up feeling wonderful). So.. you know what they say about a glass of milk before you go out. I reckon it must be because of the fat in it (surely the folk wisdom pre-dates skimmed milk). Fat makes your stomach retain its contents for longer (this is so that the fat is released slowly enough to be broken up, rather than just staying in one huge greasy lump). I reckon that whatever it is in those drinks that makes me vomit is also buggered up by the low pH in my stomach.
So do an experiment for me: eat a pound of lard and then go and drink eight pints of porter and tell me how you feel.
(By the way, the dehydration thing is what gives you the /headache/ (which I didn't get). I reckon it's something different that makes you sick)

i find i get less of a hangover when drinking guinness than when drinking p*ssy lager... the only problem is the state of the toilet the next morning after a night on the black stuff![;)]

I find Guinness doesn't tend to have much of an effect on me for some reason even though it has the same sort of alcoholic contnt as other such beverages.

Maybe its because you have to pay so much for it here in Australia that you can only afford half the beer...? [;)] Had my first Tooheys the other day, not bad considering i don't like lager much!
