Notice how non orange a lot of them are ?

What's that all about ?..Have ewe ever tried a non orange carrot ?..Is Orange not the natural colour of a carrot ?...are these genuine bona fide varieties or are they dyed versions ?...do they taste different ?  I've never seen them inreal life..have ewe ?

The carrot coloured carrot ((https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Fclueless%2F1.gif&hash=ba6e884e2ac18d739c0e89967c82862b) OK, orange then) is not the natural colour of the carrot. It must be around 100 - 300 yrs ago that a new less bitter carrot was bred. Originally (and naturally) the carrot has a rather bitter taste and is white. Through hybridisation the far more tasty carrot we know and love today came about.

I'm not sure if the change of colour was pure accident or intentional. Whichever the case, David Dickenson and Judith Chalmers may have had something to do with it.

If white was the original color, then  what is the difference between a carrot and a parsnip?????

They are of the same family Apiaceae. The carrot is of the genus Daucus and the parsnip is Pastinaca.

Also in the family are parsley and fennel.

At a well known on-line supermaket the difference is £1.56/Kg - £0.68/Kg.

Hemlock and giant hogweed are part of this family (also know as umbrelliferae) too.

The same kinda guy who thought up the pencil museum (http://www.pencilmuseum.co.uk/) and the penis museum (http://www.ismennt.is/not/phallus/ens.htm).
