Should the cork and spray both be in shot ?.
Surely the cork, propelled by gas, not champers, has hit the ceiling before the booze leaves the bottle ?

I think you are right. The cork usually leaves the bottle quite a bit before the liquid foams and overflows the bottle (if it even does.)

I'm inclined to believe it because I also found this

I suppose it depends a lot on how you hold the bottle. I can (usually) get the cork to pop without spilling a drop (the stuff is expensive enough as it is).

On that example the foam catches up with the cork after ~6",
but the foam does not overtake & surround the cork.
