Title: Brain Development

I just came from a Disney Store and bought a toy for a year old child. The toy as interavtive "educational" toy that was rated for children 18 months and over. The toy had kids distinguish between basic shapes and colors. Can an 18 month old really do this? At what age does the brain begin to develop this functions?

Yes, an 18 month old should be able to do this. But as a general rule, never believe anything Disney or any toy company says about the educational value of their toys. 'Training perception' and 'brain exercising' type toys are mostly nothing of the sort. If your child finds the toy entertaining then it's a win as far as stimulating their brain goes.
