I can just about listen to a song and just start playing it. Who come I can do it and like no one else is my whole school can? I'm a just a complete weirdo or something?
Is there any research out there that shows how many people are like I am? Is it gentitic? If so how come withing all my living relations no one else can do it?
And does anyone else on this site have that amazing ability?
Thanks Sim [:)]

I wish.. But I do have a old friend who lives in Oregon who plays everything by ear,, he is quite good and can play anything he hears.. piano and guitar!
-
first song I learnt by ear. WEll without looking at anyone playing it or having teh sheet music at all. Granted the piano part in the beinging is easy I can do it. Needa train it better though even though I dont have the time right now
-
Good song!
-
Pfff I would love to have that ability..
Do you have perfect pitch?
(Is this on a guitar by the way?)
-
Well I have two guitars, two keyboards, a tenor sax, an accodion, and a piano and I can do it on them all.
and what do you mean by that? If i'm thiniking right then of course:)
-
Ermm.. Like if you hear a note, or a chord, you know what it is like whether its a C or a G sharp.. etc
-
Nah, I can't just say it, but for some reason I just sit down at the piano tand the first note i play is that one. and i ain't sure about chords yet. I havne't really tried.
-
Mmmm.. I think it is perfect pitch then.
Cos if it's the first note you choose and it's right, that means that you think its a C or a D etc..
-
Yeah, but I can just listen to it and say oh that's an f#. like i learned that's the key our microwave cooks in..i have no life ha
-
LOL!! That is cool [;D]
-
That is cool! LOL!
-
Alright. I just discorved I had this like a year ago and well I ai'nt that hot at it yet. or will there be no yet? can i train it a little better or not? cuz I mean i have it. If i just sat down and tried i'd have to be getting better at it or atleast go oh i am good i just needa sit down and try it?

perfect pitch is extremeley rare.
being able to work out the notes by listening to a piece of music, and play it without ever having been shown how, or seen the musical annotation is something most musicians can do.
some can just do it more quickly than others.
in fact, anyone, even a non-musician could eventually, after the third or fourth listen to say a single bar of music, and a little experimentation, be able to replicate those notes.
musicians are just quicker at it, and thats a combination of experience, and a finer judgement of pitch.
-
yeah that's all i need is experience and i'd be hawt.

Yup I can do that too.. Except a few attempts at the notes. I can't just play a note and get it right first go.

So how come people that have this ear like me can't really read sheet music well? Or is that just me? I know all the notes and stuff, but I can't just look at it and play it.
-
Wow that was cool. I went outside and opened the garage door. And I hummed the pitch came in and the first note i played was b. and of course it was it hahaha..well its c on my piano since i still haven't tuned it yet..for some reason someone tuned it a half step higher then it should be. i have no clue why.

Ermm that may be cause you didn't get taught or... If you just learnt to play by yourself..

So you actually thought it was a b when it was actually a c [:P]

Mozart was supposed to have had very perfect pitch - he would know even if an instrument was a teeny weeny bit out of tune. He is said to have been able to hear a long piece of music once, then play it back from memory.
On my website there is a page which has a signal-generator and a frequency-counter/instrument tuner you can download.
http://www.techmind.org/audio/
It will tell you what frequency you are playing/humming, and its corresponding musical note (based on the scientific scale though!).
In the past I've also found some fun musical-ability tests at this site (nothing to do with me):
http://tonometric.com/
Note that you may have to fill in a brief mini-survey before you can see your results for the adaptivepitch (or other) tests.

No its actually a b, but its a c on my piano since its HIGHER then it should be.
and no. i was taught how to read sheet music with my saxophone in band before i even got a piano..but i still can't just read and play it. even though i did teach my self guitar and piano completely

and thanks techmind..

thats not perfect pitch.
perfect pitch would be if you heard the note, and instantly recognised it as b.
it sounds as though you remembered the note, then replicated it on the piano.
all humans could do this, with the exception of a few completely tone deaf indiviuals.
the only difference between you and a complete novice in this is that you would be more likely to play the right note first try, and this is just experience.

playing a piece of music by ear is a learned skill for most people.
you hear the music, guess at the first note, then replicate the melody or chord progression using guesswork, and a knowledge of scales, a familiarity with musical styles, and with your instrument.
for me its mostly instinctive, i just work out whats being played through trial and error, but i've been playing long enough that i mostly just know where the next note will be.

Yup yup.. I don't have perfect pitch.. I don't think I even have relative pitch.
But I can still do what you wrote up there [;D] After a few attempts
-
Alright how could you just listen a note and know it? I mean I could probably get middle c, but yeah.
-
Yeah, that's perfect pitch.. Not many people have it.
Most people have relative pitch.. Which is like, if someone tells you what a C is and they play you something 2 notes higher, then you know it's an E..
But I don't even think I have that [:P]

yeah i see i see
