Title: How can I put on weight safely?
Post by: DoctorBeaver on 28/06/2006 07:24:42
No, this isn't a deliberate ploy to counterbalance the Zetacap thread!

At my latest check-up Mrs Doctor-woman said she wants me to put on a bit of weight. I'm 5'9" and 10st(ish) - that's 140lbs to our transatlantic friends - which is around a stone (14lbs) under the weight I've been for most of my life.

I'm reluctant to employ the draught Guinness diet as a) it's expensive, and b) my toilet hates me when I drink Guinness.

Is there a safe way I can add around 7-14lbs without it all being flab? Exercise is out of the question for me as I have a serious lung condition.

Pizza !!...I did mention it once before...Deep Pan and stuffed crust

or how about drinking lots of full cream milk and eating lots of nuts !..cashews !..nice and fatty and good for you.

It's going to be difficult to put on weight that is not going to be ' fat ' if you're unable to exercise !

Mackerel and other fatty fish...fluffy cheese omelette's (watch the cholesterol though with the eggs)....coconuts and coconut milk orientated curries.

Sausages.......sausage casserole/stew is yummy with beans....you wanna keep those pulses and fibre intake up as well.

Spaghetti with creamy sauces....Oh the list is endless...lasagne's....cannelloni..etc etc..

Man Neil, You are making me hungry with all that Italian food. I love italian! It is my problem.
Doc beaver. Do some arm flexes using your own body as resistance or just use the little dumbbells you see people use when jogging. you can do the arm thing without to much strain on the lungs. That will help bulk up the muscle and add a bit of weight. Then like Neil said,, most of which is high carb. Then there are those protein drinks you can add a couple of them a day to maybe bulk up a bit. When my mother was sick with Cancer they recomended Ensure to keep up her weight. She added that to her diet. I am not sure If I spelled that right, it might be Insure with a "I". It comes in several flavors....might help!....Karen

All taken on board... thank you.

Neil, I know the drink/shake stuff you mean but I also can't remember what it's called. As far as I'm aware, though, it's used as part of a diet to lose weight, not gain it.

I had considered eating a lot of steak but I'm not sure if that would have the desired effect without exercise.

Theirs only two ways, extra  food or some kind of extra excersise.

Some people cant put weight on through eating extra food (me)and so the only other option is to exersise.

Not all exercise requires a good set of lungs, try lifting some heavy weights whilst lying on a bench , as long as their heavy enough your repetitions shouldnt be fast enough to trouble your breathing and if it does then slow down to a level which you can cope with, as long as your body is experiencing more strain than what it is accustumed to it will increase you muscle mass and as muscle weighs so much it shouldnt take to long.

But check with your doctor first please[:)]

Yes, the drink would normally be a substitute for a meal...but my suggestion is you drink it as an addition, not a replacement.

I agree with Neil as an addition to your regular meal! Ensure is for people not getting enough calories and intake. Kemo kills the appetite and you loose calories, so "Ensure" adds calories to what you are already eating to boost your weight and keep you from vaporizing into nothing! Definitely check with your doctor on the excercise. Also before you increase your beef, check your chlesterol level to make sure you know where you stand in that department so you don't screw your count all up!....Karen

My mother in law had tongue cancer several years ago, and is no longer able to eat solid food.  She has soup and stuff along those lines, but she drinks ensure to keep from losing weight.  Good luck.

yeah i cant imagine that lifting weights would strain your lungs too bad. just take it easy when you lift them and your breathing wont be effected too much.

the only safe, proven way to gain weight rapidly is through a steady diet of fast food, preferably burger king. head on down to bk everyday and get a triple whopper. extra cheese, extra mayo, add bacon. get a king size milkshake everytime and buy one of those delicious cheesecakes they have. put it in the shake. get king size fries and ask for mayonnaise packets. make sure to use the drive through, going inside burns precious calories. put the mayo on the fries. mungia!

I'm glad you said BK; I can't stand McD burgers.
