True, but why?

Same is true over her, and I believe MRSA is not even the most dangerous of the hospital caught bugs.

Ofcourse, part of the issue is that HIV infection now has a fairly good survival rate (not cure, but long term survival - assuming someone pays for expensive drugs for the rest of your life).

AIDS never killed anyone. It attacks the auto-immune system thus allowing other infections to take hold. It is those other infections that case deaths. So, even if MRSA killed only 1 person, that would still be more than AIDS.  [^]

Hi Doc, how are you?

Well, if you put it this way...
even car crashes never killed anybody:
they only caused a series of lesions in
different organs and the mechanisms of
tissue repair couldn't make it!

 [;D] [;D] you guys !!!!!!

seriously though..... superbugs are       super scary. Two people I know have fallen victim to them.
Two elderly people going to hospital with nothing *that* seriously wrong and end up dying...... makes me
nervous every time I have to go for a test.....

Nearly got me - last hip surgery MRSA pneumonia almost had me. It was diagnosed early in the game thought so they were able to find something that would kill it. It was very fortunate I didn't have a more virulent strain.

It is all over the place and has been for a long time. Staph. aurius is a common bacteria found on everyone's body. It lives on the skin. As people started taking penicillin it started getting resistant to them. slow, as newer and newer antibiotics were introduced, the resistant strains got more resistent to all of them - hence the name multicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aurius.

Geting hospital staff to wash their hands is a big step forward.

S'posedly, C. difficile is getting much more common in (British) hospitals because the big drive to use alcohol spray to clean hands between patients (in the fight against MRSA) is leading more medical staff to clean with that instead of washing their hands properly with soap-and-water, and only soap and water kills C. diff.
Apparently they're also (finally!) encouraging doctors to wear short sleaved shirts and leave their ties at home. There was a reason why doctors traditionally wore bow-ties in the old days. Eugh.

My first job being as a computer operator, requiring to deal with big mainframe printers, which could easily throttle you if your tie got trapped in the mechanism, I have always (when I have had to wear a tie) made sure it was tucked under my belt, and the shorter end affixed with a tie tack.  That having been said, ties are a somewhat useless piece of attire in modern dress, and I would as soon discard it.

Not sure I think much of the idea of bare armed doctors, although I can well understand you don't want cuffs dropping around the place, so why not use elasticated cuffs that will not droop into things, but will contain flakes of skin and hair dropping off bare arms?

Thanks for that George!

Nice image ......

You ARE right of course.

Perhaps someone will come up with an  antiviral/antibacterial/antimicrobal/anti-everything moisturizer that makes a protective semi-permeable film over skin (one-way only to allow respiration) and with that formula makes a killing. [gotta talk to bored chemist]

.............maybe  not.....  [::)] [;D]

What's your second job?

My daughter just called from school and said that 3 students are being treated for MRSA.  Two of them are in serious condition. It's a very tiny school, so I'm wondering should I be concerned?  What can I tell her to do to prevent being infected by this.

WASH HER HANDS! often and don't use anyone else's makeup, towel, comb - anything that has been in contact with skin or hair.

Thanks JimBob.  I've always drilled into her NOT to share those things, but I'll make sure she knows not to.  She's been washing her hands alot.  She has a private room, but what concerns me is that she has to share a bathroom with a suite mate.  She wears flip flops in the shower, but I hope she's bleaching it down before she uses it.

i don't know about there, but where i went the janitors cleaned the showers every two or three hours. so unless she's showering right after the other person, it's probably ok

No, they don't have janitors to clean their rooms and bathrooms.  They have to do it themselves.
