Post by: Seany on 05/06/2007 21:46:28
I'm always curious.. After I eat alot, my tongue starts to feel funny and fizzy and kinda sore.. Why is it?

It must be an awful lot, since I have never experienced this (although I don't eat kiwis - or even kiwi fruit, since eating kiwis might be a little anti-social; but I do like pineapple, although can rarely be bothered to cut up a fresh pineapple, but will willingly eat it if someone else does the cutting).

Well.. If you eat more than 3 or so whole kiwis, your tongue definitely feels weird. That's not too many..

Well I like fruit.. I can eat so much that I am full from not even eating a meal. Even then, I don't stop unless there isn't any more cut in front of me.. LOL

Pineapples.. Well.. I love them and eat lots... If you eat over half a pineapple (big size) by yourself.. Or maybe a bit more, your tongue feels oww... You can't eat anymore.

Do you know why?

Next time, try peeling the pineapple & pull the kiwi's beak off  [:D]

There is however some science involved too - both kiwis and pineapples contain protease enzymes - these break down proteins - you have some in your digestive system. The structure of your mouth is made of protein, and so the pineapple juice essentially digests your mouth. Fresh pineapple juice is good for tenderising meat - it breaks down the tough connective tissue, and you can't make jelly out of it because the proteases break down the gelatin.

It does mean that it is easier to extract roughly pure DNA from the fruit though because it breaks down the proteins in the cells but not the DNA.

Wow.. That is interesting.. So.. If I eat too many.. My mouth might... Go all bumpy and... Rough.. And lose the proteiny stuff??

So you can't make Pineapple jelly?

"So you can't make Pineapple jelly?"
You can, but you have to cook the fruit first.
