Yes basically there is an immense amount of space and not a lot of gas, and most of the gas has gravitationally collapsed to form stars or planets leaving the spaces in between very very empty.

All gases have a molecular mass. That mass will 'search' for the nearest 'lower gradient' :)
Or not as much 'search' as passively following that 'gradients' demands. In the case of gravity the gases will fall into 'gravity wells', and, there are a lot of those everywhere, as 'gravity' have no limits where matter might be. So either it will clump together, or it will wander of 'downhill' in the direction/gradient of the nearest mass.

And gases 'clumping' together often becomes Suns, I think?
