Inspired by Karen Mam's 'closet ' thread I just started cooking a good old fashioned stew and found to my delight some garlic granules that should have been used by April 2004 ...!..after giving one to my daughter (to test) I went and used them anyway. [;D] [;D] [;D]
so...what's the oldest ' use by 'thing in your cupboard ?

I don't think we have anything that old really, nothing really stays in the cupboards that long [;)]

I know I have spices that are more then 17 years old and we still use them.. always sample the dry goods first.. Make sure they are dry and good. Spices last for a very long time...! LOL IE Look at the egyptian tombs and all the spices used and sent with them to take into the next life... I kid you not I have some old spices...

You never know sunshine.....there may be some dried herbs developing their own intelligence back there !!...if you dare to roam there...don't go alone !! ...LOL..Hugs the Dan

NO I mean 17 years and older.. LOL, I am still using spices from before my mom passed away... LOLI will check em out and give you some dates... LOL

They say they loose some of their flavor, but I haven't found that to be the case yet.. I always try them first!

Oh my !!!....to think that mustard has been there all these years.....ewe better watch out...English Mustard is strong stuff !!...and methinks this one needs to be sealed in a lead box and buried a mile deep..LOL !!!

It was the height of post-war luxury: a hamper crammed with delicacies, topped by a whole roast chicken preserved in its own jelly and sealed in a tin.
The year was 1956 and the hamper was bought by Les and Beryl Lailey for the guests at their wedding reception. By the end of the day, they had polished off the sandwiches, the hams, the cheeses and the luxury shortbread biscuits.
All that was left, resplendent in its Buxted packaging, was the chicken.
And it remained untouched for 50 years until, finally, Mr Lailey, 73, plucked up the courage to eat it on the couple's golden wedding anniversary.
"It was really quite tasty,"he said yesterday at his home in Denton, near Manchester. "Maybe a bit salty, but then I didn't follow the instructions to the letter."
Perhaps distracted by a crowd of disbelieving relatives, Mr Lailey, a one-time corporal in the Argyll and Southern Highlanders, had omitted to heat his 50-year-old skinless chicken in the oven for the 10-15 minutes the instructions advised. "I just broke off a leg, smelled it, drained the jelly off it and then bit into it. The flesh was white with a few pinky bits.
"Our grandchildren were appalled, begging me not to eat any more, but I knew that if it smelled OK, it wouldn't do me any harm."
Mrs Lailey, 70, a retired machinist, declined to taste the 3lb chicken on the ground that she was recovering from flu.

we have the 10-year clear out, so I'm not due for another one for just over 5 years!
Last time revealed something in a packet from 1991, so that would be about 10 years old I think! its usually things like cup-a-soups and those packet dried foods for rehydration. no wonder they stay in the cupboard!

yayyyyy !!...dried goodness luff in your cupboard.......ewe just never know when it could be used to repel an alien invasion or save a life. ewe ought to be commended for your diligence is such a preparation.

I didn't realize that artists like Eminem had been around since egyptian times....to make all those Mummys...they must have had some great rappers !!..LOL........................(groan....that one was well bad)...........LOL
