As a sheepy, I of course know how to clean myself..I am a regular cleaner and tend to my hygienic joys every year on my birthday !

In my experience 'self cleaning oven' means you have to clean it yourself! http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=23282.0 (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=23282.0)

There are two self cleaning processes and we have had ovens with both of them. The older one uses catalytic liners which are rough and dark coloured that reduce the temperature that the fat splashes burn but eventually after a few years they war out. The more modern ones like our latest oven are purely pyrolytic that is they ave normal shiny enamel surfaces and they get so hot (not far short of red hot!)that the fat just burns off after an hour or so. They both make a fair bit of smell and smoke while they are working and you need a kitchen with a good extractor fan and no fire alarm!
