People nowadays like to throw around the term "Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior" as well as a certain sphincter-related four-letter word but, then again, that's how we went to the moon, that's why our computers, cars, and pretty much everything else exists and works as fantastically as they do, and that's why we get paid so much!

Generally though, I think people develop habits of doing things as well as habits of seeing things because those habits have worked well in the past.  For example, theoretically of course, someone's wife could have certain "rules" about how to conduct one's domestic affairs based on what she has learned herself or, perhaps, on what her mother had taught her (hey, there's someone to blame).  Also, too, certain seemingly strange habits can fit into an overall scheme of behavior and, to change that one behavior, might discombobulate the whole scheme.  As with habits and traditions, knowledge upon which this behavior was based may become "lost" or may be no longer applicable.  We so often hear when asking why something must be done in a particular fashion that, "it's alays been done that way".

There's a story of soldiers in artillery school learning to wait 20 seconds after firing their cannons before attending to the cannons again (re-aiming, re-loading, etc).  When a soldier asked why, he was, of course, told in proper soldierly fashion "it's standard procedure".  An old artilleryman happened to be stationed at the school, so this soldier asked the old fellow who replied that the 20 seconds was allotted to calm the horses after the cannon was fired!

So, if some purely theoretical person want to ask why his theoretical female spouse insists on certain theoretical domestical behavioral procedures, I would wait 20 seconds to allow the horses to calm down before approaching the topic again!

THANK EWE DiscoverDave...OCD ?..yep !

Habitually learned  ?..yep !!

NOT MY WIFE of course but the person also rinses the plates (so that they are almost clean) before putting them in the dishwasher !!...what a waste of water and money !

However, it IS part of this persons (Not my wife..grrrr) " Comfort zone"...as mentioned by your "it's always been done that way"  !

I guess, I (not me !!..DOH !!)..will have to live with it !

Thank ewe again for your great & very informative  comment DiscoverDave

A, ahem, friend of mine has experienced similar situations. I He partially solved the problem by constructing a workshop in the garage that is considered a "no go area" to certain domestic authorities. Your friend might consider something similar. Do you Does he have access to an air raid shelter perchance?

er, well, mind how you your friend goes there.

Take old Tiger Woods for example. What started off as a simple domestic argument could have ended up in tragedy. I'm guessing it went something like this;

"If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times. Don't you come waltzing in 'ere dumping your bleedin' golf clubs in the middle of the living room at all hours of the night!"

TW mumbles something under his breath

"What did you say? Want a woody? I'll show you a woody Mr Woody. Take that! And 'eres the shaft that goes with it."

Would it be ironic if she clobbered him with his own nine iron?

Yup... compulsive disorder. That's what immediately came to my mind as well.

Agreed !..I just thought there may be a more specific name for my wifeys my friends wifes behavioural pattern. It just seems that if there's a phobia or neurosis out there that it has a term applied to it !
