Title: Staples...single but together in harmonious staple joy......but how ?
Post by: neilep on 17/09/2007 22:35:41
Dear Stationery and Office Material Suppliers,

Here is a piccy of some staples I just took :

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

Nice isn't it  (how sad am I eh ?..LOL)

Anyway, staples are really good at keeping things together....and also pretty good at staying together too all in a nice row like that....so..how do they do that ?...how do they stick together ?......are they manufactured individually and then stuck like that ?

Does a stationery supplier eat a staple diet ?

They must be glued together, I don't see other simple explanations.
By the way, I found there are two kinds of them: sharpened and non sharpened (my name); you could notice looking at their tips. The first kind can penetrate through more sheets of paper.

THANK YOU ALBERTO.

I was thinking 'glue ' myself but  then I thought that perhaps they are brought together whilst still very hot and so that they form a tiny metallic bond when in contact with each other.

Yep, silly I know....but your guess at glue sounds far more reasonable.

THANK YOU

Very good question indeed !  I googled in different languages, and even found how a stapler is made, but never how staples are produced.  (Of course, the fact that "staple" has so many meanings is not exactly helpful when you google in English.)
There is one reference to a pattent - but no way to find the complete pattent on the web.
There are however a couple of (commercial) sites where you can find staple making machines.  From the picture and the very limited explanation, I conclude that a number of metal wires are laid parallel, are glued together (one site specifies :  with silicone glue)before the plying and cutting.
I just hope that someone else will know or find more.  I will keep on searching a little more.

I've got a few Chinese friends. I'll ask them because everything is made there these days.

Some further results as promissed :

pg 4 shows a graph and some pictures of the actual machine

I have actually peeled some very thin layers of glue form them when spitting the row for smaller staplers! Are they also compressed before they are glued?

From what I understand in that graph on pg 4, (http://www.conmetron.cz/offer.pdf) the "rolling machine" lays the wires side by side and flattens them.  The "drawing machine" makes sure that there is enough tension on the wires to keep them well aligned during gluing (the part in between).  In the presser, the "tape" is folded (crosswise against the tape) and then cut off.

Appart from making that tape by laying wires side by side and gluing them together, the technology is a bit similar to the production of paper clips :

Mr Eric Sir,

THANK YOU very much for this post and the others and the research you have done. I am most grateful...and so is my stapler !

Your diligence is most appreciated.

THANK YOU
