......setting aside the amazing computational skills here....I can't see the practicality of it...though I can think of a few...perhaps for the disabled or the elderly perhaps ............though...as a demonstration of what can be achieved , which I assume is the premise,it's mesmerising !

As you say, very interesting as a demonstration of state of the art robotics, but still insufficient to be practical in the real world. The chair seat (which was where all the robotics seemed to be) was able to reorientate itself to approach each of its component parts at the right angle, but it was not able to pick up, and arbitrarily reorientate each component if that part was not already lying at an acceptable angle (e.g. if one leg was laying across another ley, or the back of the chair had been oriented in a different way).
In any case, if it is really about self repair, then the point at which the chair would break would almost certainly leave it irreparable by such simple reassembly. If the idea was simple self assembly, then it makes sense, rather than have separate components, simply to have the chair as a folding chair (with legs attached, but folded underneath).
