Dylan asked the Naked Scientists:
Which scientist discovered the atom and found out stuff about it??
What do you think?

Democritus of Abdera was the first person to put forward the idea of ατομος (atoms) he was greek and lived between 470 and 380 BC. A very interesting philosopher, he even believed that the Milky Way was a vast collection of stars, and democracy is named after him. His theory of atoms as being the basis of matter wasn't believed at the time, and wasn't rekindled until John Dalton 21 centuries later.

I had always assumed democracy was a conjunction of demos δῆμος (the crowd, the mob) and kratos κράτος(strength) - but it turns out it was named after a dude named democritus. you learn something new every day

"Jhon Dalton" - the greatest scientist had discovered the atom and before the discover from him, there were many scientists who worked hard over it.

As has been confirmed here the Atom was first proposed by a Greek. In fact in Greek the meaning of Atom is that which cannot be split. I think that science has taken an amazing leap forward in such a small time as we seem to be on the verge of a scientific announcement that the Higs Boson has been discovered, surprisingly not at the LHC either.

The Greek philosopher Democritus was the one who coined the term 'atomos' which means indivisible. Although there were no scientific proof for this, his philosophy was brought through the ages and later scientists knew about the structure of the atom.

Einstein proved the existence of atoms using pollen. Prior to that it was only a theory.
