...actually...perhaps someone can answer why does 'squinting ' enable us to read the above ?

if you stand about 8 feet away from your screen you can read what its says. if you slowly move closer it becomes unreaderble. weird

What exactly are we trying to read? [8D]

HI Neil
Squinting and making chinese eyes reduces the amount of light that enters the eyes and allows you to see the black of the letters in the picture stand out against the white background.
Or squinting reduces the area of view allowing you to see only the centre of the picture where the words are.
Or maybe the pressure placed upon your eyes when you squint may also change the shape of your eyes allowing them to focus differently.
Or maybe we're just getting old and our eyes dont work as good as they should
The answer should be one of the above, Not sure which but they seem reasonable to me [

It is odd! I used the slitted eyes technique and when I let my eyes return to normal shape I could still read the words until I changed focus (by blinking).
Is it just a matter of interpretation? I don't think so becuase, even knowing what it looks like I can't see it without squinting!
Maybe one of your proposed mechanisms is the answer, ukmickey.

If you scroll to the bottom of the page then scroll up you can see it then. As the screen is scrolling it is visible but when it stops it dissapears. How strange!!!!

I've worked it out!!! When you squint, or view the screen from a distance it removes the thin white lines. It is the thin white lines which hide the letters. If memory serves me correctly our brain likes to make shapes and complete shapes where gaps exist.
If for example you were to draw a partial traingle, your brain would complete the triangle enabling you to "see" the completed triangle. In this case, your brain uses the thin white lines to construct big white shapes but when you squint or do chinese eyes or move away from the screen, the thin white lines dissapear and the new shapes our brain constructs are the letters.

Yes, I can still see the thin white lines too, in the middle of the letters.
Nice idea though drkev, I think that you're probably right about the significance of those lines. Squinting may not make them disappear but maybe it disrupts the pattern the mind makes of them?
