This is a tower crane

Nice,eh? It's being delivered to Neil next Tuesday. [:P]
But how will they erect it? Will Sheepie have to wear his high heels and put his finger on the join?
-
Erm, perhaps they use a crane to put it together.
Smart thinking eh!

I believe such a crane has the ability to lift itself a certain distance so that a new segment can be added. Then the process is repeated.
-
Self erecting cranes do the whole thing themselves. (hmmm logical)
With other cranes, a mobile crane is used to lift the sections into place.

Self erecting cranes do the whole thing themselves.
Sounds painful

Thank you, Karsten & Don

Sound fun, actually.

I'm starting to worry about you.

Don't go all Mumsy on me now.

The actual problem is not a hard one to solve. All you need to do is to have a long 'builder' section strapped to the side of the tower you want to build. You haul up the builder section so that it sticks up beyond the top by the height of a tower section. You then haul up the next tower section, using the builder section, and bolt it in place. For the following section you just haul up the builder section another stage and repeat the process. When you've finished, you lower the builder section to the ground. Finally you assemble the jib around the tower and haul that up to the top.

You make it sound so simple I feel silly for having asked (https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Fsmileys%2Fsmiley-sad023.gif&hash=d738cff67e80d60c935c0b169ff1a0e8) (http://www.freesmileys.org)

I bet you don't feel nearly as silly as all the people who build tower cranes using another (telescopic) crane.
-
It's probably a lot quicker with another crane to help you - but more expensive. A mobile crane costs at least £1k for a morning's hire.

That was quick! Thank you Don.

I've seen some erections in my time but that beats them all.

Isn't that how cranes live on.
Being erectile at the right place and moment.
Why should 'tower cranes' be different?
I've seen it on the telly, and it's true.
