Title: Can cats have a big "O"?
Post by: Eric A. Taylor on 18/11/2010 05:24:41
My friend's cat lost his right rear leg in a run in with a car and he can no longer scratch himself on one side. He love to have me scratch him on his neck and under his ear. The other day I was giving him a real good scratch and he suddenly fell over and flopped around on the floor in a way very like to a person having an orgasm (his eyes even glazed over). Can cats and other animals experience what could be called orgasm?

Can non-sexual orgasm happen? A friend of mine told me she sometimes had a mini-orgasm while breast feeding her baby. She was not even thinking of anything sexual when it happened, it just did. Personally I thought it a little strange, but didn't say that to her.

Maybe a seizure caused by brain damage sustained in the car accident (http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+1321&aid=224) ?, which may or may hot have been triggered by being scratched.

Cataplectic* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataplexy) individuals can collapse when they experience strong emotion, including laughter, (if you tickled a person with cataplexy, causing them to laugh, it could cause them to collapse).

I'm not sure about brain damage. I've wondered if other animals have orgasms like humans do, after all reproduction is critical to life. Organisms that reproduce sexually will not pass their genes on if they don't mate. In humans both the males and females experience a lot of pleasure with sex. I've heard that for female cats it's painful, but I can't imagine felines would have much success if the females avoided mating.

I read that the only animals that have sex for pleasure are humans, some other primates, and dophins. Not sure if this is true though.

It's not just cats that go catatonic when stroked. Apparently, sharks do too, although, perhaps it's sharkatonic in their case.

Geezer I'm very worried if your out there stroking sharks. May not be the best idea you've had.

I was watching some game show and one of the questions was what is the best way to avoid shark attacks. It was multiple choice and one of the choices was "Stay out of the water" What floored me was that some people chose other answers!!!!

Best game show answer I ever saw was the English version of "Family Feud" the question was "Name a way in which you might toast someone" A contestant answered "over a fire" everyone laughed and the host told her if it was up there he'd give her the money himself. It was on the board.

Opening an umbrella causes some goats to "faint" ... @0:47

[looks like a hypersensitive version of "playing dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playing_dead#Tonic_immobility)"]

Why do the other animals do it?
Do they think to themselves "if we don't mate our species will die out- best get on with it then."?

This may be true but all animals probably get pleasure from sex. After eating and breathing it is the most important steps to passing on your genetic material. Any organism that avoids sex will have a very small chance of having babies.

I think that's pretty much the same point I made.

Sorry, thought you said that only humans, primates and dolphins have sex for pleasure.

How could that be known? It's not like they use contraceptives...do they?
