Title: Have you tried Ice for curing cold sores?
Post by: tweener on 25/03/2004 05:26:37
After reading the thread on shingles, I remembered that I have something to contribute here.

When I was young, I suffered cold sores every few weeks.  This went on for years. Then I found the cure!  Hold an ice cube directly on the sore for 15 to 20 minutes.  Use a washcloth to keep your fingers from melting it, but put the ice directly on the sore.  Repeat this every three or four hours for a couple of days (until the sore is not "feverish" anymore).  You won't ever get a cold sore right there again.

When I feel a cold sore starting, I start using ice, and it prevents it from breaking the skin and really erupting into a full blown cold sore.  The initial spot is usually gone in less than one day.  If I wait for a day and the sore has developed, the ice makes it go away faster than it would otherwise.

I used this treatment several times over the course of a couple of years, and the cold sores gradually dimished to the point that I would only get one after a really high fever or long exposure to the sun.  Now, I haven't had one in over six years, even after I'm sick or in the sun.  I'm cured!  (knock on wood).

There is some evidence that compounds present in garlic can help to reduce the severity of a cold sore. A number of pharmaceutical companies have been pursuing this line for a while to identify the agent and market it in a form that doesn't make you stink or repel vampires.

Doesn't the ice get awfully cold on your genitals, though?

Fortunately, I've never had to worry about that end![:0]

And, I don't think they're called "cold sores" when they're down there anyway.

Ooooh, I know the answer to this one!
I get cold sores at the drop of a hat.  They are always so bad I have to get a prescription for them....well, no more!
At the first inkling of a bump, I take 3 Lysine, and 3 more every for hours, and I never get the cold sore.  Bump is gone!  If I don't get to the Lysine in time to stop the cold sore, it greatly lessens the time and severity.

Lysine is all natural and dirt cheap, and you can buy it just about anywhere!

I carry them with me at all times, have been cold sore free ever since I found out this little secret!

Thanks for the link, Nelson. And thanks for "BTT"-ing this topic DrB. It's of interest to me too.

I'm puzzled why nobody has mentioned Zovirax (or other Aciclovir-containing creams) in this discussion (although you can find it hidden in the "products" section of Mr.Mandela's link).  I thought it was the most common product for cold-sores - and I've always found it works for me.  (It seems expensive, but you use so little of it each time you get a cold sore, one tube can last you for a year, so it actually works out as reasonably good value for money.)

I've tried Zovirax but I can't say if it works or not. Sometimes I get the familiar tingle but the sore does not erupt with or without Zovirax. If I use it after the sore has erupted, how do I know that Zovirax is clearing it up quicker?

I've been getting cold sores since I was about 10 years old.

I probably get a cold sore about 2-3 times a year.

To treat the cold sore, I usually use a combination of rubbing alcohol and some type of OTC cold sore medicine.

The cold sore usually dries up within 3 days and then I sport a nice looking scab for about a week.

Let me tell you, I never get tired of people asking me what happened to my lip.

I just got a cold sore today which sucks and am actively trying to find something that will really truly work.

I've tried valtrex and I really couldn't see any kind of a difference in healing time.

I wish they would come out with some kind of vaccine. God knows there's a lot of money to be made if you do come up with the vaccine.

Keep it real.

I too have had cold sores for most of my life and the ONLY thing that has ever done any good is "zovirax" or its generic form Aciclovir.  Even then it is absolutely essential to use it the very moment you first feel the tingle or swelling and continue for some time after as reccommended in the instructions.  That's why I always carry a tube with me.  I used to get three ot four a year which went through the full cycle in about a fortnight but nowadays I only get one or two threats a year and they only show for a few hours and do not blister or break the skin.  Well worth keeping in stock I think. If you wait a few hours before starting they wil probably blister a bit and flake but not form a really deep ulcer.  Any longer and the best you can iexpect is a slightly quicker healing.

what cause's cold sore's.  is it a permanent infection/virus that surfaces every now again which can't be cured.

Yes it is a permanent infection with a virus called herpes simplex (there are several).  It is ususlly passed on by some scabby aunt slobbering all over you when you are a baby.  It is related to the Chicken pox virus and also the one that causes a disease called shingles.  There is an article on it somewhere in these pages I think.

The virus tends to lurk in nerves and come out when you are under some sort of stress like excessive sun  or a cold (hence the name "cold sore")

It's also related to genital herpes.

There are two types of Herpes Simplex Virus: HSV-1, which causes cold sores; and HSV-2, which causes genital herpes.

The following site is full of useful facts and very easy to read:
http://herpes-coldsores.com/std/herpes.htm

One thing that too few people are aware of is that (quoting from the above site):

quote:
Although less probable, HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes.

So if you have a cold sore (or feel one coming on), it's probably best to avoid "Doing a Monica" (named after Monica Lewinsky of course) - or if you're a male, avoid "Doing a Donald" (Sutherland, that is - referring to the famous scene in the film "Don't Look Now").

(Unfortunately, both my missus and I get cold sores quite often. [:(])

I knew the two were related but had no idea a cold sore could cause genital herpes

I've had relly bad cold sores for all my life.  I used to use Zovirax and found it pretty good. Then I tried 'Soothelip' made by 'Bayer' and I think it's just great.  Now I stick with it and always carry it with me.  It's very similar to Zovirax but for some reason it works better with me

Herpes virus can also cause neurological damage:-

"" Herpes Simplex Encephalitis

Herpes simplex is the most common form of the herpes virus, and often manifests as cold sores and blisters around the mouth, nose, eyes or genital areas. While herpes cannot be cured, new drugs can help prevent outbreaks of the sores and blisters. Although some cases of herpes can cause complications such as meningitis, blindness and hearing problems, in most cases the outbreaks are mild and short-lasting.

In rare cases, the herpes virus can enter the brain and cause encephalitis. This normally only happens in people whose immune systems are already compromised, by illnesses such as AIDS, Hodgkin's disease or diabetes, or by undergoing chemotherapy. Herpes encephalitis is frequently fatal, particularly if treatment is delayed. Unfortunately, since many of the early symptoms mimic the flu (headache, dizziness, vomiting), it is easy to misdiagnose the condition until it is too late.""

I live in USA and used to suffer from cold sores - My doctor prescribes FAMVIR 500 mg which I takes 2 or 3 a day when I first get a tingle - take for a week - no sores for years.  Cost here about $140 for 14 pills

There is another pill, can't remember name, also prescription that you have to take 5 times daily , less expensive

Hope it helps

Dab with aftershave once every two hours, or dab with Kombucha, or dab with lemon juice.

Hi, I suffered cold sores for several years, even today i felt a cold sore starting but I have the cure for it, it definitly work for me. Here ar the 3 steps that you must follow:
1. At the very moment you start to feel the firs tingle, you must use zorivax or aciclovir in both the creme and pills (2 pills of 200 mg and the creme works for me)
2. Go to sleep. This is probably the reason why aciclovir works for me and dosent work for other people. Relax, forget the cold sore and go to sleep (this will reduce the stress and will make the aciclovir work perfectly). Even if you are in work, tell your boss you feel very sick and go to sleep. If you need some kind of pill for sleep, take it.
3. Wake up, and you will notice that the sore is gone.

These 3 steps have work perfectly for me and other people I told them to follow these steps.

well I suffer from cold sores every year. I get them 2 to 3 times a year. The only time when I get cold sores is when I get colds. Mines last about 4 weeks and they dont have liquid in them. they also don't form a yellow crust. mine form a black scab and it takes a while for the scab to come  off. I hate getting break outs I feel so sad I always get depressed becauseI feel like that all peole are staring at whwn they look at me. but if you do suffer from cold sores you should wash it with salt water and try to put whole milk on it I never tried it but I heard that it maybe works. hey try it you never know

I've tried zovirax before, my doctor prescribed it for me but it did'nt really work for me. I also tried abreva and that did'nt work for me either. abreva cost $25 and you get a tiny tube smaller than my pinky. try putting an ice cube on  it'll probaly work better.

Once you get this damn virus you get it for life! Like many others I contracted this as a little girl, probably given by a smoochy aunt with a cold sore who didn't think

I used to swear by Zovirax, but I seem to have become immune to it - it just stopped working.

I took a punt on a natural product from NZ that is just a god send, and for me, it has meant  a permanent end to cold sores. I have not had one since I first used this amazing product VIRASOOTHE - and given that I got them on average once a month for over 30 years, I have every reason to be impressed. Cure? No, I don't think so, and they don't claim that to be the case on their site, but it certainly can put them into permanent remission (9 years cold sore free and counting) I don't think I will get another now - what a relief!

Hi all

I have had cold sores for over 30 years. They used to be infrequent, say 1/2 a year, but now I have had 5 outbreaks in the past 6/7 months : (

Zovirax used to work a treat if you caught the bugger in time. What I am finding now is that I no longer get that tell tale tingle. So by the time I realise I have one developing Zovirax isn't a great deal of help (although it does cut the healing time down by a day or two). In fact I think I may have become immune to it.

The tea bag idea doesn't work for me. Nor does the ice cube.

Being a man one big draw back of cold sores is that I can't shave when I have one. They are usually on the edge of my lip so I have to keep my razor clear. So not only do I have a sore on my lip I also look like the wild man of Borneo : (

One day, I'm sure, they will find a cure.

My cold sore's laugh at ice cubes and drink zovorax for fun. But i have found this to work, Isopropanol or Isopropyl-alcohol.

it is a cleaning agent used in electronics. You can buy it in swabs from electronic stores. When the tingling starts just rip open a packet and rub the infected area. The tingling will continue for a while but just ignore it and you should be good to go. Re-aply if you feel the need.

this stuff is toxic so do not ingest, apart from that it is safe as houses. If it can kill a rhino it can kill a pansy little virus.

Works a treat.

Its a lip sore that appears every now and again and you catch it from an already infected person, and once you've got it , you've got it for life.

Its a form of herpes ,So dont go around kissing people with a big spot on their lip.

symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning occur through inhalation and include flushing, headache, dizziness, CNS depression, nausea, vomiting, anesthesia, and coma.

In rats it causes deformalities but long term exposure hasnt been tested on humans.

Iso Propanol is also used in the manufacture of hash oil and Cocaine, So long term human exposure has been tested, Although that may explain the side effects of dizziness, headache, munchies etc.

Iso is a form of alcohol, that if ingested will cause the same effects as any other type of alcohol poisinig. dizziness, vomiting much the same as any good night out at the pub will do. Just as alcohol found in drinks at the pub, if taken in sufficent quantities will cause coma and death. So dont drink it, just rub the swab on the cold sore. And your deformity will disappear.

Do not put in your eye, it hurts.

Hi dallengirl89,

I'm afraid there is no failsafe solution but I've found a lot of the advice on this boards useful.

I've been plagued by the dreaded cold sore on and off since I was about 8 years old. I'm now 40. I still feel the urge to hide indoors or wear a paper bag over my head when it happens and I really do sympathise with you.

All I can really do is offer are some thoughts after 30 odd years of living with it.

From memory, cold sores were a lot more severe for me when I was your age. As the years have gone by the attacks seem to occur less frequently and are often pretty small. But they do happen unpredictably and always seem to come at the worst times - on vacation, a few days before a first date etc.

Zovirax doesn't work very well for me either but I'm pretty sure that following the directions on the pack to the letter (incl washing hands before & after application etc) does have some beneficial effect.

I think the main thing to remember is that, although you feel like a leapor & it seems to you that the only thing people can see is that damn scab on your face it really isn't as bad as that in real life.

As you grow up you will find that people around you ignore it, don't notice it or suffer themselves so they know exactly how you feel.

It really is such a common thing and kids your age that get them too probably prefer to pretend they don't and their insecurity about it may make them react immaturely. But as you, and they, grow up it becomes less and less of a big deal. Among my friends, at least half of them suffer from time to time and the other half don't give it a second thought when I appear with one. The same is true of girlfriends.

There's nothing wrong or bad about getting these things and anybody with half a mind knows that it's not likely to have been anything to do with sexual activity. Remember, if someone is lucky enough not to get cold sores, they are certain to know someone who they respect, love or care about that does.

So although right now you may feel uncomfortable, embarrassed or ashamed about a cold sore, learning to live with it is just part of growing up. You just have to get on with it.

Once life has thrown some of it's serious curve balls at you, you will see the occassional cold sore for what it is - a pesky annoying little bug, but not that big a deal.

I hope this helps a bit - you'll be fine!

Mark

I've had cold sores all my life 8-12 times a year. Acyclovir tablets work for me, but not the oitment. Couple years ago on a forum I found a statement, that low carb diet really makes you clear of that. It seems that herpes likes carbs, especially grains. I do remember before outbreaks I always craived carbs and indulged. Since then I started avoiding grains, and it seems to help. I did get a cold sore once, but I was having lots of grains couple days before, so I know the cause. In addition, it helped me to loose weight. I wish I new it 30 years ago.

Ice is often recommended, but I have my own way of applying cold.  Keep a couple of soda pop cans, filled about 1/3 with water, in the freezer.  At the first unmistakable tingle of a cold sore, hold the ice-cold can against your lip for about 10 minutes.  Gently - it will tend to freeze to the lip at first, but if you are touching just a tiny spot it will thaw in a minute or so.  Keep the area as cold as you can short of frostbite.

The frozen soda can feels colder than an ice cube, maybe because the aluminum  transfers heat so well. And you don't have water dripping all over you.

Two or three applications throughout the day will usually stop it in its tracks.  My experience is that, if the cold sore has started to become visible by the time I treat it, it still takes a week or so to run its course, but doesn't get any bigger.

On a cautious note, don't pick the virus up on the can and transfer it to another part of your lip!  Maybe that's not possible but why take chances?

BTW, if you put the can back in the freezer with an ice/water mixture, it will burst.  Wash it off and wash the ice out first.

I have only had 2 cold sores that I can think of. None in the past 10 years anyways. The one I remember was when I was young and it was bad. I think I must've picked at it because its spread all around the bottom of my nose and was agony.

Very bad.

There has been a cure found for this problem.

The study was first conducted by German doctors and duplicated by two Iranian female doctors who administered the cure on 60 patients and got the same results as the German scientists.

I am not going to get into the details of the articles, because they are over my head and besides, references to the articles can be found on the internet.

Anyway, I would like to share the results of the cure on myself since they have turned out to be EXACTLY what both German and Iranian doctors had described them to be.

The cure is called "Zinc Sulfate Topical Cream."

Please search the web for more information as I have forgotten the web sites where I found the information, but I would like to share with all of you what you should do.

Regardless of whether you have cold sores or not, twice daily rub the cream around your lips (massage the cream into the skin surrounding your lips with a cotton swab).

What will happen is that the Herpes Simplex-1 virus that causes cold sores resides in an area behind your ears, but every once in a while, when the conditions are right, it would like to migrate to the area around your lips and multiply or mutate (not sure if this is the correct term); this is when we get the sores.

However, the German and Iranian doctors have found that if you continue using the cream for at least 9 months (this peiod varies from individual to individual) each time the virus migrates to the area surrounding your lips, they get massacred by the chemical agents in the cream, and thus as they return back to their hiding place behind our ears there will be fewer and fewer of them and so over time the sores will diminish in size, duration, and strength, and if you use the cream long enough the virus can actually be WIPED OUT of your body.

I have been using the cream for about 7.5 months (although, there was one month when I was so happy that I was not getting them that I foolishly stopped rubbing the cream). But I tell you, first of all, you must rub the cream on your lips whether you ahve the sores or not. But when you do get them, cover the itching or tingling area with plenty of the cream and be patient and watch how the cream miraculously stops the virus from causing a blister.

Remember, increase the amount of the cream on the effected area and let it set on your skin.  The itching and burning will be bothering you, but cover it with lots of cream and let it to do its job.

The results for me have been that cold sores either never break the surface and create nothing more than a light brownish discoloration before disappearing, or if they develop, they are so small that they are extremely difficult to see.

I have an extremely busy schedule, and one time when I forgot to cover the affected area with lots of cream AT THE TINGLING STAGE, the sore developed to a bigger size, although, I caught up with it a little late and did not let it to grow larger like than it used to.

But both the German and the Iranian doctors have reported a significant decrease in the intensity and frequency of the outbreaks in their patients. In the case of the German study, the study makes the claim that if the cream is used for long enough, it will lead to complete cleaning of the virus from the body.

One person on the web, I remember, had written that after having used the cream for 2 years, the outbreaks had beceome so small he could feel the tingling but could only see the discoloration (never a full outbreak) with a magnifying glass.

I believe the german study was conducted in 1999, and it was duplicated by the Iranians some time in 2002 or 2003.

Good Luck to all of you.

Zinc sulphate can alleviate the symptoms, but does not affect a cure.  There are also other treatments for the symptoms, but none of them will kill the underlying virus.

http://www.vitacost.com/science/hn/Supp/Zinc.htm
quote:

Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes needed to repair wounds, maintain fertility in adults and growth in children, synthesize protein, help cells reproduce, preserve vision, boost immunity, and protect against free radicals, among other functions.
In double-blind trials, zinc lozenges have reduced the duration of colds in adults,1 2 3 but have been ineffective in children.4 The ability of zinc to shorten colds may be due to a direct, localized anti-viral action in the throat. For the alleviation of cold symptoms, lozenges providing 13–25 mg of zinc, in the form of zinc gluconate, zinc gluconate-glycine, or zinc acetate, are used, typically every two hours while awake, but only for several days. The best effect is obtained when lozenges are used at the first sign of a cold.
Lozenges containing zinc gluconate, zinc gluconate-glycine, or zinc acetate have been effective, whereas most other forms of zinc and lozenges flavored with citric acid,5 tartaric acid, sorbitol, or mannitol, have been ineffective.6 Trials using forms other than zinc gluconate, zinc gluconate-glycine, or zinc acetate have failed, as have trials that use insufficient amounts of zinc.7 Therefore, until more is known, people should only use zinc gluconate, zinc gluconate-glycine, or zinc acetate.
Zinc reduces the body’s ability to utilize the essential mineral copper. (For healthy people, this interference is circumvented by supplementing with copper, along with zinc.) The ability to interfere with copper makes zinc an important therapeutic tool for people with Wilson’s disease—a genetic condition that causes copper overload.
Zinc supplementation in children in developing countries is associated with improvements in stunted growth, increased weight gain in underweight children, and substantial reductions in the rates of diarrhea and pneumonia, the two leading causes of death in these settings.8 9 10 Whether such supplementation would help people in better nourished populations remains unclear.
A small, preliminary trial has found zinc sulfate to be effective for contact dermatitis (a skin rash caused by contact with an allergen or irritant).11 Participants with active skin rashes took approximately 23 mg of zinc (in the form of zinc sulfate) three times daily, for one month. 73% of those taking the zinc sulfate had complete resolution of their skin rashes, while the remaining participants had a 50–75% improvement. Further trials are needed to confirm these preliminary findings, however.

http://www.vitacost.com/science/hn/Concern/Cold_Sores.htm
quote:

What are the symptoms of cold sores?

Cold sores may appear with colds, fevers, exposure to excessive sunlight, or menstrual periods, as well as during periods of stress or illness. The sores usually disappear within two weeks. Initially, there may be tingling or prickling at the site of the cold sores even before they are visible (called the prodrome); afterward, the blisters often weep a clear fluid and form a scab. If the infection is transmitted to the eyes, it may lead to blindness.

Medical treatments

The over the counter topical agents docosanol (Abreva®) and allantoin (Herpecin-L®), as well as camphor and phenol combinations (Campho-Phenique®), help relieve pain and might promote healing of cold sores. Analgesics, such as aspirin (Bayer®, Ecotrin®, Bufferin®), ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®), and acetaminophen (Tylenol®), might provide some pain relief.
Antiviral prescription medications such as topical acyclovir (Zovirax®), topical penciclovir (Denavir®), or oral acyclovir (Zovirax®) might reduce the duration of the sores.

Dietary changes that may be helpful

The herpes simplex virus has a high requirement for the amino acid, arginine. On the other hand, the amino acid, lysine, inhibits viral replication.1 Therefore, a diet that is low in arginine and high in lysine may help prevent or treat herpes outbreaks. Several studies have shown that increasing lysine intake can reduce the recurrence rate of cold sores.2 Although people with herpes simplex reportedly consume about the same amount of arginine and lysine in their diet as do people without cold sores,3 it is conceivable that adjusting the intake of these amino acids may be beneficial. For that reason, many doctors advise people with cold sores to avoid foods with high arginine-to-lysine ratios, such as nuts, peanuts, and chocolate. Nonfat yogurt and other nonfat dairy can be a healthful way to increase lysine intake.

Nutritional supplements that may be helpful

The amino acid, lysine, has been reported to reduce the recurrence rate of herpes simplex infections in both preliminary4 5 and double-blind trials.6 7 The amount used in these studies was usually 1 to 3 grams per day, although some people received as little as 312 mg per day. In one double-blind trial, lysine supplementation (1,200 mg per day) failed to prevent recurrences better than placebo.8 However, the results of that study may have been skewed by a large number of dropouts in the placebo group who fared poorly but were not included in the analysis.
When lysine has been used for acute outbreaks, the results have been mixed. In a preliminary study, 390 mg of lysine taken at the first sign of a herpes outbreak resulted in rapid resolution of the cold sores in all cases.9 However, in a double-blind study, supplementing with 1 gram of lysine per day for five days did not increase the healing rate of the cold sores.10
Vitamin C has been shown to inactivate herpes viruses in the test tube.11 In one study, people with herpes infections received either a placebo or 200 mg of vitamin C plus 200 mg of flavonoids, each taken three to five times per day. Compared with the placebo, vitamin C and flavonoids reduced the duration of symptoms by 57%.12
Zinc preparations have been shown to inhibit the replication of herpes simplex in the test tube.13 In one study, people with recurrent herpes simplex infections applied a zinc sulfate solution daily to the sores. After healing occurred, the frequency of applications was reduced to once a week for a month, then to twice a month. During an observation period of 16 to 23 months, none of these people experienced a recurrence of their cold sores.14
Zinc oxide, the only commercially available form of zinc for topical application, is probably ineffective as a treatment for herpes simplex.15 Other forms of topical zinc can be obtained by prescription, through a compounding pharmacist. However, because an excessive concentration of zinc may cause skin irritation, topical zinc should be used only with the supervision of a doctor knowledgeable in its use.
In a preliminary trial, a piece of cotton saturated with vitamin E oil was applied to newly erupted cold sores and held in place for 15 minutes. The first application was performed in the dentist’s office. Participants were instructed to repeat the procedure every three hours for the rest of that day, and then three times daily for two more days. In nearly all cases, pain disappeared in less than eight hours. Application of vitamin E oil appeared to accelerate healing of the cold sores.16 Similar results were reported in another study.17
Application of an ointment containing propolis, the resin collected by bees from trees, has been shown to relieve genital herpes more effectively than topical acyclovir.18 It is likely that this treatment might also benefit people with cold sores, although this has not been tested. Propolis ointment should be applied four times per day.
Boric acid has antiviral activity. In a double-blind trial, topical application of an ointment containing boric acid (in the form of sodium borate) shortened the duration of cold sores by about one-third.19 However, concerns about potential toxicity have led some doctors to avoid the use of boric acid for this purpose.
A preliminary study found that people with recurrent cold sores have lower iron stores than healthy people.20 This may mean that correcting an iron deficiency might help prevent herpes outbreaks, but more research is necessary. Most people should not take iron supplements unless they have an iron deficiency, confirmed by a blood test.
Are there any side effects or interactions?
Refer to the individual supplement for information about any side effects or interactions.

Herbs that may be helpful

Lemon balm has antiviral properties. A cream containing an extract of lemon balm has been shown in double-blind trials to speed the healing of cold sores.21 In one double-blind trial, topical application of a 1% 70:1 extract of lemon-balm leaf cream, four times daily for five days, led to significantly fewer symptoms and fewer blisters than experienced by those using a placebo cream.22 In most studies, the lemon-balm cream was applied two to four times per day for five to ten days.
The proanthocyanidins in witch hazel have been shown to exert significant antiviral activity against herpes simplex 1 in the test tube.23 In a double-blind trial, people with acute cold sore outbreaks applied a topical cream containing 2% witch hazel bark extract or placebo six times a day for three to eight days.24 By the end of the eighth day, those using the witch-hazel cream had a pronounced and statistically significant reduction in the size and spread of the inflammation when compared to the placebo group.
Licorice in the form of a cream or gel may be applied directly to herpes sores three to four times per day. Licorice extracts containing glycyrrhizin or glycyrrhetinic acid should be used, as these are the constituents in licorice most likely to provide activity against the herpes simplex virus. There are no controlled trials demonstrating the effectiveness of this treatment, but a cream containing a synthetic version of glycyrrhetinic acid (carbenoxolone) was reported to speed healing time and reduce pain in people with herpes simplex.25
In traditional herbal medicine, tinctures of various herbs, including chaparral, St. John’s wort, goldenseal, myrrh, and echinacea, have been applied topically to herpes outbreaks in order to promote healing.
An extract from elderberry leaves, combined with St. John’s wort and soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), has been found to inhibit the herpes simplex virus in the test tube.26 However, the effect of these herbs on cold sores has not been studied.
Are there any side effects or interactions?
Refer to the individual herb for information about any side effects or interactions.

http://www.vitacost.com/science/hn/Supp/Lysine.htm
quote:

What is it?

Lysine is an essential amino acid needed for growth and to help maintain nitrogen balance in the body. (Essential amino acids cannot be made in the body and must be supplied by the diet or supplements.)
Lysine appears to help the body absorb and conserve calcium.1 Lysine has many functions in the body because it is incorporated into many proteins, which are used by the body for a variety of purposes. Lysine interferes with replication of herpes viruses and is therefore often prescribed by doctors to people with cold sores or genital herpes. A review of the research trials investigating the effects of lysine on people with cold sores shows that most, though not all, trials support the use of lysine.2

Where is it found?

Brewer’s yeast, legumes, dairy, fish, and meat all contain significant amounts of lysine.
Lysine has been used in connection with the following conditions :

  • Cold sores (recurrence prevention)

  • Genital Herpes

  • Shingles

Who is likely to be deficient?

Most people, including vegans (vegetarians who also avoid dairy and eggs), consume adequate amounts of lysine. However, vegans whose diets contain large amounts of grains and only minimal amounts of beans could become deficient in lysine. Athletes involved in frequent vigorous exercise have increased need for essential amino acids, although most diets meet these increased needs. The essential amino acid requirements of burn patients may exceed the amount of lysine in the diet.

How much is usually taken?

Most people do not require lysine supplementation. Doctors often suggest that people with recurrent herpes simplex infections take 1,000–3,000 mg of lysine per day.

Are there any side effects or interactions?

In animals, high amounts of lysine have been linked to increased risk of gallstones3 and elevated cholesterol.4 At supplemental amounts, no consistent problems have been reported in humans, though abdominal cramps and transient diarrhea have occasionally been reported at very high (15–40 grams per day) intakes.5
Lysine supplementation increases the absorption of calcium and may reduce its excretion.6 As a result, some researchers believe that lysine may eventually be shown to have a role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.7
Lysine works with other essential amino acids to maintain growth, lean body mass, and the body’s store of nitrogen.
At the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with lysine.

As for where the Herpes Simplex virus resides:

http://www.dermnetnz.org/viral/herpes-simplex.html
quote:

Antiviral drugs will stop the herpes simplex virus multiplying once it reaches the skin or mucous membranes but cannot eradicate the virus from its resting stage within the nerve cells. They can therefore shorten and prevent attacks but a single course cannot prevent future attacks. Repeated courses may be prescribed or the medication may be taken continuously to prevent frequent attacks.

Has anyone here ever noticed that their cold sores stopped while dating a certain person?  I started getting cold sores when I was about 18, I'd get 2-3 a year that last 2 weeks each time.  Then I met my girlfriend.  I got one about 3 months into our dating.  She didn't care because she said she thinks she's immune based on the fact that she's had several boyfriendswith cold sores and never has had one.  I never saw her with one either.  It's been 3 years now and haven't had a cold sore yet.

I believe it may have something to do with the fact that I perform certain acts with her that may put whatever keeps her immune in contact with my mouth area. [:p]

IS that possible or just a coincidence?  Who cares really because it's fun either way and I haven't had cold sores so why analyze it?  [:D]

It's hard to find treatment that works.

Does anyone have any relevant links to treatment I could try?

According to this page
http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=194
something like 20% of the people I know should get cold sores.
I don't remember them doing so.
If you get cold sores, don't forget that most of us probably don't notice them, even if we do then they are far too common to be embarrassing.

I get cold sores about once a month and the best thing I have ever tried is a zinc paste. It takes about a day before it goes away after that, but it seems to pretty much just melt it away. The only problem with this is going out in public with a big path of white paste on your lip. I have found that the best thing to treat a cold sore is to dry it out as much as possible. Take pain killers if it hurts, but dont put any kind of chapstick on it. It will go away so much faster that way.

At the moment I have a bad cold and a few days ago also had the signs of some cold sores coming on my lips.

I always use Hydrogen Peroxide, dip a cotton bud in the neat peroxide and apply to area, best to do it before it blisters. It will sting a bit and go white but after a few applications the sore does not appear again.

2 days ago I had cold sore symptoms, not one but 3 and now nothing visible.

Try it, cheaper and more effective than most treatments.

I am here to testify that ICE is the magic trick to cold sores.  My 12-yr old daughter has consistently had cole sores most of her life.  We's used Zovirax, Abreva, peroxide, Dr. Tichenors, apple cider vinegar, nail polish remover...you name it..we've used it.  She just had an awful one that covered most of her top lip and extended onto her face...it lasted 2 weeks and ended week before last.  Then she got another one last week...we had heard about the ice trick and she started applying pressure w/an ice cube several times a day and IT NEVER BROKE THE SKIN...couldn't even see it past the first tiny bubble.  AND..she wasn't even applying medication in-between ice or at night.  It's gone!!!  IT WORKS!!!  Thanks to all who suggested it!  Finally a CURE...and it's free!  :)

This will sound funy, but our family secret (lol) is to wet your finger and put it behind your ear and get the oils there and apply to the beginning cold sore.  When I first heard my husband say this, I just laughed but I swear, it works!  Maybe God gave us natural cures on our own body?  It's worth a try right?  It has worked for me.  I also heard that cold sores can be from lack of iron.

Virasoothe is just amazing!  Nothing actually cures, but after a lifetime of cold sores almost back to back, I have now been free of them for years.  I don't even have to think about them now.  From the first time I used Virasoothe, they just stopped. Wonderful stuff.

[^]I've suffered with these monstrous things, along with my 18 year old son.  He gets them much worse than I do, with them on his lip, below the nose and up inside the nose.  I just woke up with one of these things after a week of horrendous stress (my son got into a car accident and totalled his car).  I'm sitting here, trying the ice cube trick and truly hope it works!  I must say, though, pure tea tree oil usually does the trick for me.  Its better than Abreva, Denavir or any other cold sore preparation.  I'll let you know how the ice works!  I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

I'm back to report that the ice cube trick worked!!!!  I couldn't believe it, but it did.  I usually get a HUGE MONSTROUS cold sore on my lower lip.  I tried the ice cube trick every 3 hours for one day and when I woke up the next morning, it was 90% gone!  No oozing, itching, pain, swelling ...NOTHING!  The whole site was 100% cleared up in 2 days, not the usual week and a half.  THANK YOU ...THANK YOU ...THANK YOU to whoever posted this "cure".  I must say, I thought it was goofy at first but figured, what the heck.  I've tried everything else...why not one more!  And yes...like stated in another post...IT'S FREE!!!!  I suggest that anyone else who has the ability to spend the time sitting with an ice cube for 20 minutes evey 3 or 4 hours.... DO IT!  You will not be disappointed!

I am currently in hell with my cold sores. I got 2 of them three months ago, and since then, they have just recurred and recurred and recurred. They havent gone away in THREE MONTHS, and now I have four of them. Two on the corners of my mouth, and two on my bottom lip, extending towards the skin on my chin. They are horrible, huge and painful.

Ive gone to the doctors three times about it. The first time she told me they were going away and to use some blistex on them. The second time I saw another doctor and she took heaps of blood tests which found that I was very low in iron, anaemic almost. But she said that had nothing to do with the cold sores.

Ive used up 8 tubes of zovirax, tried tea tree oil, l-lysine tablets, ice, vitamin B tablets, and blistex. I even went on herpes medication that my doc scammed for me, which did nothing. Nothing works. I hate going out in public and its been three months now since Ive felt normal. I would appreciate if anyone who has experienced cold sores that dont go away or have any advice to speak up, because I have compeletely used up all my options now.

Time for the paper bag I guess!

Then I began taking Lysiene and it made a drastic difference. The bottle says only to take for 30 days, but even now I still take it cause if I stop, right away a cold sore will pop up. I have just tumbled upon this discussion.
Cold sores have been the bane of my life since the age of 7-8. For the last 5 years my outbreaks have got worse, and worse. I am sitting here now with two sores, one on either side of my mouth, just under my lips. they stretch down almost as far as my chin, and almost meet in the middle. They are 6 days old. They hurt like hell, and look like hell spawn. The previous two weeks before these I had a similar sized one on my left cheek. Before that, on my right cheek, before that, in my nose, ears, and around my lips.
I have tried just about everything in the past. All the anti-virals, tea tree oil, lavendar oil, lemon oil, garlic, L-Lysine, herbal cures, blue-green algae, topical alcohol, etc, etc;
None of it works.
Today I sat down with a doctor who specializes in immunology, and has a good deal of knowledge about the herpes virus in all its guises. He has put together a very sensible sounding plan of action for me to follow. Taking into account the fact that my outbreaks have gone up and down in severity at different time of my life, he has tried to identify what may make me more susceptible. He has also identified certain things that for me are almost definite 'triggers'.
In short, here is the plan:

My diet must change so that I avoid (as much as possible) nuts, hard candy, chocolate, grapefruit, and bitter oranges. The citric fruits are a contact problem.
I must use a suncream of at least spf 20 at all times outside, and stronger in bright sun.
I have a sleep programme to follow which means bed by 11pm, and proper rest. I wont go into details, but its the kind of sleep advice thats commonly in health articles.
Prolonged Muscular stress should be avoided. This is not the same as normal, healthy muscular use. He means bad posture, and muscular strain caused by repetitive work or habits. Apparently this has put a strain on my nervous system by creating times of chronic aches and pains that literally wear down the bodies ability to fight illness.
He has also recommended that I have aciclovir tablets to hand, and start taking 400mg five times a day whenever I notice the signs of a new outbreak.

All of this was worked out after 5 interviews with him, and a lot of questions and hard work. I even have a 'map' of my history, where all the possible factors are mapped against outbreaks over the years, and it does seem as though certain factors play a large part in my problem.
I have no idea wether any of this helps anyone here, I am only just beginning this plan myself, so I don't even know if it works yet.
The reason I am posting this here is because the plan he has given me makes sense. By mapping all the things I can remember about my past, and matching it to outbreaks I can see what he is getting at.

I'll re-post in a few weeks and let you know how I am getting on. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

If you read all the forums you will often see ICE suggested. The difference between this 'solution' and all the others is that every reference to ice is in praise, while all others received mixed reviews. Some fail at all types of medication, some respond brilliantly to a particular one, some use a cocktail ... but ice remains a common 'YES'. When I tried it, I wrapped up a 1 inch square cube in tissue so that water didn't run down my arm and placed it on the outbreak till until the ice was gone in about 10-15 minutes. Then did it again with a second cube, and then again with a third. 30-45 minutes with an ice cube firmly pressed on. No dabbing, no trips to the mirror ... clamped on continuously and firmly (not fiercly). Finally a trip to the mirror - gone, gone blessed gone. Slightly tender (I just froze my lip), but no swelling, no blister, hardly noticable aside from the slight redening from the freeze attack. One thing I noticed is that ice is not just ice ! At home an ice cube from my mild domestic fridge is like glass, while at work the big fridge is more powerful and the ice is heavily frosty white ... ice works period, but heavy frosty ice is heaven. Don't be worried you'll do damage freezing your lip, I have absolutely no side effects from the freeze attack, and after 45 minutes of freeze, it only takes 5-10 untill all is as it was, except the virus has given up its attack! If the virus has made a sneak attack like after sun burn rather than stress, and the flare up happens while you are asleep (so it's well under way when you spot it), the ice will work fine but the skin may already be damaged. That's where the other tip of 'nail varnish remover' is useful. It is strong and any remaining virus activity will also be alienated from the area, but it's great in very rapidly drying out the area, almost like a sealant. Unless your cold sore is huge it should help a lot to close down the exposed area and prevent the nasty scab that is embarrising as well as uncomfortable. Bottom line is that ice and nail varnish remover are a cheap fast 'repair' not cure, that everyone that I've read about says ... 'it works'  [;)]

Amazing reading all those anecdotes. I tried H-Balm (Forces of Nature) and then ChroRaphor ('once you have used it you will not get a reoccurance. Buy 1 get 1 free' !)I thought they were working, but it co-incided with a change of environment where I ate fewer nuts. Since resuming high nut consumption, cold-sore have come back.

I have sent off for Virasoothe as people here say it works. I will also trial Bio Stick (30 days trial, money back guarantee) and post the results.

One hint for those in the UK, a generic version of Zorvorax is available in my local Poundland. It is called Pinewood Coldsore Cream, is identical, and costs, yes, just £1.

Ice cubes really do work, especially when used the second you feel any tingling at all.  You can often prevent the sore from developing if you start the ice early enough.  I hold an ice cube on the area until it melts, wait a few minutes and then hold a hot tea bag on the area until it cools.  I follow up with a dab of tea tree oil and then put some Abreva on it. I repeat all of that two or three times a day.  Also, the second I feel one coming on, I start taking l-lysine(about 200 mg every 4 hours).

I guess all of that is overkill, but I just had a cold sore that was gone in two days using that treatment!

Also, very important, keep drinking water!!! It will take longer to heal if you are not hydrated.

It looks like there could really be a cure for cold sores on the way:

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1819739,00.html?imw=Y

I have put up with them now for 40 years or more and have a few scars to prove it.

But the real worry was a recent bout when they appeared around my left eye for the first time. The doctor was quite concerned and stated that if severe they could send you blind. Coincidently(?) this occurred after I had been doing some nude sun bathing to try and get a tan for a forthcoming holiday. Luckily they disappeared after some treatment and did not affect the cornea and I have not had any since around the eye.

If the above cure is successful I will be the first in line as I would say that cold sores have been the curse of my life.

I am hearing a lot of good things about the ice method.  Next time, I get sore, I will try it and let you all know.

Thanks.

Ice helps, I wouldn't say it's the end all-be all. Really if you want to be safe and have a job or school, Valtrex 1000g a day we'll save you a lot of trouble. Also exercise in the morning. You'll feel better and it's good for your body. Also take L-lysine.

If you are broke try herplex, L-lysine & exercise.

I heard it's pretty decent.

as much as i wish it weren't so we will probably never see a cure for cold sores. It's just not in the pharmaceutical companies' best interests to make one available to the public, not when they can charge us for their treatments for the entirety of our lives. It must be a real cash cow for them and i'm sure it makes a mint for them. If they did release a cure they would lose an unthinkable amount of money over time, for all we know there could already be a cure, patented and locked away so no-one can sell it no the open market. I'm still hopeful though that some independent  genetic scientists sneak one past them. Fingers crossed

I'd say that Ice helps reduce the length of time of my outbreaks. I have found that there are really only two things that prevent cold sores for me. I usually don't use valtrex because I don't like to put drugs in my body but that stuff really works for me.
The other thing that I like is vygone. This one is cool because you can use it on a ton of cold sores.

No cold sores for more than a day in 2 years now.  I'd had cold sores for 40+ years usually every few months. They're even present in my toddler pictures.  Nasal ones were the worst for appearance as you can imagine.  Once when I had braces placed they made a continuous ring around my mouth.

Stumper makes a very good point about diet.  If you are feeling stressed or have the least bit of a tingling cold sore aura ABSOLUTELY swear off all chocolate especially dark chocolate until you are well out of cold sore harms way.  Peanut butter, nuts and red grapes flame the fires of a cold sore too.  If you are a dark chocolate fiend  limit your intake even on your good weeks to lessen the likelihood of a sore beginning.  These foods are high in arginine and cold sores absolutely love it.  Cheap and important is the ingestion of daily lysine to counterbalance the arginine. I also carry them with me. Salmon is a good substitute for lysine. You can't avoid arginine all together nor should you want to your whole life as it is good for your heart but it is the lysine:arginine ratio that keeps cold sores at bay.  So..if you know you overindulged with nuts or chocolate take an EXTRA lysine and save yourself a lot of grief.
ICE is indeed great, thanks for the tip from multiple contributors.
If you use Valtrex be sure it is prescribed as 2 grams the 1st dose and 2 grams repeated in 12 hours then finish. You only need 4 pills for an episode but must be pulsed in this manner.  This is the recommended dosing for cold sores but some doctors believe it can be dosed the same as for shingles; not so.  If the dose is stretched out over a few days or a week it does not work very well if at all and you've wasted money on a lot more than necessary pills.  Ask for the 1 gram pills, the highest dose it comes in, as higher milligram pills are cheaper than many lower milligram pills.  Valtrex is for last ditch efforts.
Really if you take lysine daily year round with extra for dietary faux pas, monitor your chocolate and nut intake, and if anemic - take iron to lower your stress level, you shouldn't need Valtrex except when you slip up as we all do.  But again, the ice has really saved me even in that case when recently I foolishly had no lysine (or salmon) available.
Good luck to all.

To get a cold sore is the worst thing in the world.  now that sounds so over the top but when you get one, it really is the worst thing in the world.  I constantly bite my lips and lick over the top of them in fear of a small bump..........and 95% of the time, there is nothing there.  But on that odd occasion, usually when something I am really looking forward to is on the agenda, there is that horrible, awful, sinking feeling and the thought of 'here we go again' and then my mind races ahead for the next ten days to check the calendar in my head for any social appointments.  If there are social appointments, they will be promptly cancelled with the excuse of 'no money' or 'have got the flu'.... letting people down is the least of my worries because for the next ten days, my confidence is zero and my contact with the outside world is kept to an absolute minimum.  When that contact comes along, the wipe of the nose or the turn of the head are the things that kid you into thinking the other person cannot see what's growing on your mouth, but they obviously can because if it was you looking at you, then you would definitely see the thing and you would also think it was disgusting and vile.  So how can you expect anyone else not to notice it or think those things when you think them yourself?  So, what about being proactive? OK, so it's straight to the chemist to buy some compeed colsore patches cos they are the only thing that can prevent a minging scab from forming and don't bother with zovirax or anything like that cos it's a waste of money and time.  the colsore patches cover the colsore up so therefore prevents spreading and like i said prevents a scab from performing.  you'll still get the bump and the 'elephant man' complex but it will normally be gone in ten days flat....  can i ask a question?  why couldn't colsores be on your back or legs or something that can be hidden easily? they really couldn't be in a worse place in terms of confidence zapping inconvenience.... oh, if you wanna take some tabs to help prevent them, get 500mg L-lysine tabs, they are an amino acid and are pretty good but don't think they will guarantee not getting them but i am told they do help so will try anything myself!!  no one will ever understand the psychological effects that a colsore has unless they suffer themselves and there is no point trying to explain either. just get your colsore patch on and phone in sick for ten days and bolt the door then everything will be fine.......if only life was that simple.  If i was a millionaire i would seriously do that because i would rather not see anyone at all then let them see me with a colsore.  Maybe there should be a club where people go when they get colsores, where they go and live for about ten days and can bolt the door behind them so no-one can come in and see them.  there could be supplies and colsore treatments available along with food and beer to make them feel better....then when healed, they can be let back into the outside world where they can be themselves again.  I don't know about anyone else bu i really cannot be myself when i have got a colsore, I am a completely different person.  I am normally friendly, confident and talkative and very sociable but give me a colsore and I turn into a hermit.  Anyway, please God may I not have any colsores or any colsores forming is my prayer every nite and so it will continue for ever more.

* Preventing a cold sore - MIRACLE!! *

I have been suffering from cold sores for 18 years. I thought there was no possible way of controlling them, but I have now found a way!!

I had just suffered from one a week earlier and the following week I could feel another brewing. I was so so upset as it was days before my 21st birthday.

So I began researching ways of preventin and here is how I managed to prevent my cold sore from forming EVEN WHEN I could feel the lump under the skin:

1) L Lysine tablets (3000mg)

As soon as you feel a tingle or see a lump forming take L Lysine tablets. It is an amino acid that supresses cold sores. During the outbreak take around 3000mg (I took 2 tablets, 3 times a day). Once the cold sore has cleared, take the normal amount 1000mg. It should prevent future outbreaks.

2) Zovirax

Apply Zovirax (acyclovir) as you would do normally to the cold sore - every 4 hours

3) Ice cubes

Hold an ice cube against the coldsore or tingle for around 20mins every 3hours. Do this until the lump has gone. If the cold sore does break out, try still using the ice as it will speed up the healing time.

By doing these 3 things together, I did not have an outbreak! Literally a miracle!!! Years of suffering cured by pretty much natural ingredients.

* I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TRYING THIS! *

herpes is a virus. just like cold and flu it will mutate and there will never be a cure. All we are doing is discussing the coping strategies.
To that end, i say thanks for all your ideas.
The antigen for the virus is passed on by the mother through the womb in child bearing. it's kind of a given that if your mother suffers you will too. because otherwise that slobbering aunt would have the potential to kill us all by virus.
I too have that 'house arrest' feeling whenever i'm 'with scab'. blow all those that don't know what it's like; they just got other nasties to worry about.

My mom has cold sores, so I can attest to from the mother to the child...mine aren't nearly as bad as hers, though - she gets them when she's sick or stressed, all under her nose and on her lips.  Mine are only when I have been stressed (and usually not until the stress is over) and only 1-2 at a time.  I've taken to drying them out with hydrogen peroxide, it seems to help as long as I get to them in time.  I've thought about buying Abreva, but I just can't bring myself to spend $20 on what is essentially a tube of chapstick.

I woke up feeling the swelling on my lip this morning - I'd only gone to sleep 4-5 hours prior; they sure work fast!  Anyway, I heard about the ice treatment just this past week (I think I jinxed myself, 'cuz I said I was going to try it on the next one), and sat here looking for back-up evidence that it helps while holding ice to my lip.  I think it might feel better, but that could be because all feeling hasn't returned just yet.  So, I guess I'll see over the next day or so how it works out...I'm glad to hear it's helped for so many others though, it gives me hope that this outbreak will be short-lived!

Like all of you - I HATE COLD SORES!!!  [:(!]  I have been getting them sporadically for the past 12 years. Every time I get them I want to avoid seeing people, but up until now have not let them rule my life. I hadn't had one for at least a year... Then three days ago I got rather sunburned [V] alas the devil's spawn appeared - the biggest one I have ever had. [:-'(]

I know that it has been established that sunburn is a major cause, but to be honest I didn't really know it was directly linked until now. [:-\] I will definitely be more careful in future - now that I have identified that as my major devilspawn cause.

This morning, depressed  [:-'(] and fed up, I went searching for a home remedy on the net, only to find programs asking for lots of money so you could be told secrets about home remedies  [:-\] - I am always very skeptical of things like that... Thankfully I came across this site  [:X]

Unfortunately I missed the blister phase to apply ice because I used Zovirax yesterday thinking it would work.. Last night I continued to put in on - every 15 mins (actually it was probably more often since I hate having them and really wanted to avoid it). But to no avail - so now today, I am in the yucky yellowy looking phase.

Thanks to all the previous posts I quickly applied a block of ice for 20mins, dabbed the area with Isocol, and rubbed in some more Zovirax, and then went out and bought the Lysine tablets - or 'LYP-SINE' as Blackmores call it.

So now I am sitting here with this horribly big and painful thing on my bottom lip.  [xx(] I have taken 4 x 500mg of LYP-SINE, held another 2 very large blocks of ice on the spawn from hell, reapplied some Isocol with a cotton tip and rubbed Zovirax in to finish.
(I've also asked my beau to bring home some tea tree oil, hoping it will be better than the Isocol  [???]
PHEW, I really hope I wake up tomorrow with my lip back  [:-\]

Wish me luck!  [8)]

Okay, its expensive but it lasts forever (batteries excluded) and boosts your local immune system, thereby making recurrance less likely. Actually it costs the same as 5-6 tubes of cream which isn't bad if you are a regular sufferer. It doesnt in itself do anything to the virus, just helps your own cells to fight it off. It seems on average to cure cold sores in approx half the time of Zovirax according to the data and reviews I've read.

I have suffered with cold sores for most of my adult life. There are 2 stages of a cold sore. The first stage is when you get that tingling feeling that says a cold sore is on it's way. This is where most prescribed drugs attempt to treat it. For the drug to work, you must take it when you have the tingling feeling and most of us are unaware of the tingling feeling. The second stage is when it erupts. At this point, forget about. It is now a healing process, no different than healing any other minor skin wound. The key to making a cold sore heal fast is to dry it out and let the dry, flaky skin take over. This may sound strange, but Ralph Lauren original "Polo Cologne" works great. Just a tiny drop of it on a Q tip, then on the sore before you go to bed. The next best thing is the "Styptic Pencil" Styptic pencils are sold everywhere and are usually used to stop the bleeding of shaving cuts. They have an incredible drying power. After you have taken your morning shower, prior to work or school your cold sore is probably blazing. Moisten the Styptic Pencil under warm water and roll it over the cold sore. There will be some serious burning sensations. There will also be some dry white residue after about 5 minutes. Dab this away with a paper towel.

I have been getting cold sores for 13 yrs now and have tried every rememdy know to man, the best one i have found is white tooth paste and L-Lysine, as soon as i start felling a cold sore coming on i whack down 2 L-Lysine tablets staright away and 2 a few hours later i also put a blob of toothpaste where it is affected, i know having toothpaste on your lips isnt the greatest sight but its damn better than a big blister. I use warm water and a soft cloth to wipe the tooth paste off after around an hour and replace it with some more, the toothpaste also takes all of the pain and itchiness out and gives a cool feeling.

Cold sore using this method if im too late to catch it before it manifests will only last 2-3 days before scabbing over.

And the absolute best advice i can give to anyone getting cold sores is to take 1 L-Lysine tablet every day in the morning, doing this i never get cold sores (its only when i get lazy and dont take one for a month or so that i usually end up getting one)

P.S I have tied the ice and zovirax method but found this one better

I found this awesome blog last year by somebody called “Lab Rat v-Ki-ras2” that has a bizarre treatment that WORKS in one day. The blog was called “How to kill a cold sore in one day”. I wanted to pass this along to other fellow sufferers because it has worked wonders for me.

ZOVIRAX and other topical medications JUST SWELLS UP THE SORES MORE AND MAKES IT SPREAD. I have tried it repeatedly. I have had recurrent cold sores since I was about 6. Damn the adult or child who gave it to me since I am a hypochondriac with germs and very careful. In any case, I get them at the slightest drop of the hat, not just from colds, but also from stress and especially from any aggravation to the sensitive skin around my mouth. In fact, I have a bad one right now. I have tried everything repeatedly over the years - toothpaste, salt, lancing, Zovirax, orange juice, and they all did not work, but instead inflamed the sores and made them spread. The only thing that works to make it go down is pressing a HOT TEA BAG every few hours and LYSINE pills taken together. The tea bags have anti-viral properties due to tannins activated when hot, and stop the spread, stop the tingling and pain and dry up existing ones in 1-3 days. When it is big and I am really desperate, I lance it with a sterilized needle, and soak up liquid with paper towel for 5 mins. Then apply hot tea bag, and soak up liquid for another 10 mins. Make sure you cannot see any fluid at all, and it will scab in 5-10 mins. I advise this as a last measure because it can spread and make it worse, so be very careful that no fluid is left, and that is scabs up.

For avoiding sore, try to eat lysine rich foods if you are going to eat arginine rich foods, such as my weakness chocolate, wheat and caffeine (strong tea). I am bad with taking pills because I fear side effects, but I think Lysine is safe, so taking it on a regular basis is a good idea also.

Good luck. I am sorry that we all have to deal with this stupid virus, but at least you're not alone, and there are some measures.

I'd like to add something here. There has been for years now alot of false info being passed around that every single person that suffers from cold sores has HSV-1/2. I too have gotten cold sores from time to time. I have been tested for HSV-1/2 via anti body blood work and cotton swab method several times over the course of years, everytime negative.... so far(crosses fingers). I also have never gotten a clear answer as to WHY I get them, just the usual "it's herpes" from the doc, then a confused look when the test results come back. I have been told that low calcium WILL cause them, low vitamin C might cause them, and a few other reasons that never pointed to a real answer. I also don't get sores like other people. When I have an outbreak, my tongue will swell and blister, I get blisters down my throat, in my mouth, and sometimes on my lips and it's not a fun experience.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, there are other reasons besides HSV-1/2 that cause sores and if you suffer from cold sores(or similar), before you start looking for over the counter remedies, and here-say, GET TESTED. If you come up positive, at least you will know 100% and you can go from there.

Hi there

I know this is an old thread but I came onto today to search for a remedy to stop my cold sore from errupting!

I noticed this thread and decided to try the ice theory.
I was on day 2 of the tingle and sore lip sensation where the
cold sore has actually not formed. But there was a dark red circle on my lip where the cold sore would eventually pop up.

So anyhow I  put an ice cube directly onto the area while holding a cloth so there would be less mess.i held it there for 5 minutes until it had melted and then I put on another cube for a further five minutes just to give it the best chance!

I went down to the mirror then to apply a compeed patch(patch you buy in the chemist to keep the cold sore covered and help healing)however when I looked at my lip the red area was gone and my lip was not  swollen!

I put a patch on anyway just in case and I will apply the ice again in a few hours and see what happens..

just wanted people to know that this really does work!

Thanks to the person who made the original post!  [;D]

I'm not sure is this is current but here goes
My daughter and I both suffer with cold sores and like several people here, we too have
never found anything over the counter or from the doctor that works. She came
across a website that sells a home made remedy.  She ordered a pot of this
mixture and it healed her cold sore within about 4 days.
She was delighted to find something that actually works for a change, especially
as she was to be a bridesmaid at a wedding the following week.  She gave me some
to try and it virtually stopped mine in its tracks when I started to develop
one.  I have told several of my friends about it and they are all giving it a
try.  Personally, we think it’s an excellent product and it’s all natural
ingredients.

The website address if anyone is interested is carmans.org.uk

I apologise for the delay in writing but this is all a bit new to me (forums)

Hiya, this is my 1st posting on the site.
I have suffered terribly from cold sores my entire life (as I have with tonsillitis as well.) My G.P and pharmacy always tell me whenever I go for my quarterly collection of Zovirax to get in there as soon as I feel 'the tingle'. It infuriates me that after reading so many posts so far on the topic on this site from others that start with creams, lotions, potions and other forms of help whenever they feel the tingle that I must be THE ONLY person who never gets a tingle. I just wake up in the mornings and WHAM there it is! I got a cold sore 3 days ago and woke up this morning with another one on the same side of my nose a bit further down, so now I look eve more beautiful!!
I have remembered a time when I was younger and was going through a sufferable time with cold sores I begged and pleaded with my then G.P and he actually cured a site that was guaranteed I would get a cold sore every time. It was right on the end of my nose, he heated up a sterile needle with and stuck it right in the centre of the site, I have never had a cold sore there since- that was 13 years ago. Why can't they do that all over your face?!
Anyway, enough of the ramblings and good luck finding more possible cures and fast fixes for these horrific ailments.

I've been suffering with cold sores since I was 8 or 9 years old and am now 23. I get them in the early fall, through the winter and very early in the spring. I have about 3-4 breakouts per year and my summers are breakout free for the most part. Like essentially everyone here, I always felt they were embarrassing, painful, annoying, and had awful timing. I tried all the OTC meds; they would work once then never again. I was prescribed denavir, which worked well, but still had a 7-10-day healing period. In desperation, I recently started trying ice. The genesis of the idea (besides the high tier 3 price tag on denavir) was thinking along the lines of reducing the swelling and cold temperature's effect on bacteria. Like most other posts, the ice technique has been amazing! I stumbled upon this forum in search of anyone else who experienced the same results.

For me, if the ice is applied at first signs, they never become visible. However, mine have a tendency to pop up overnight. The ice still almost instantaneously reduces the swelling, size and appearance, but a scab still occasionally forms if the cold sore has already risen. The ice trick works well for me because I have a desk job and I can just sit at my computer with an ice cube from my drinking glass applied to the lip. I tend to be self-conscious about the sores, so this works well in that few people notice me doing it, and I can keep the sore on ice practically all day.

Bottom line, ice is the way to go. It's free, it's fast and it's effective. Chalk up another supporter here!

Just found something that works on existing sore. It relieved pain and kept it from getting larger. Product is Salonpas. It is a pain relieving patch made in Japan and can be purchased at oriental grocery. They are cheap only about $2 for 20 patches (I cut one pad into 3 usable strips to use on side of my mouth)...product is labeled for use on sore muscles and joints. Used the patch everynight while I slept and at first I also used ice and of course took Lysine. The patch delivers camphor, menthol and methyl salcylate (up to 8hrs). During the day I used the same old over the counter products because I could not have a strip over my face.

Lysine has helped me a great deal taking it everyday plus when I get an outbreak I up my dosage by 25%-30% and I also use a prescription medicine that can be found here: http://www.alcortin.com/about.php

it really works wonders and when put on at the first sign it makes it vanish and even if you use it once you have a cold sore out break it helps heal it fast! My boyfriends mom introduced it to me and I am forever grateful.
the active ingredients are: 1% iodoquinol, an anti-infective ingredient, with 2% hydrocortisone acetate
and it has done wonders for me.

Hi Everyone

I have been suffering from cold sores for 32 years now, and have come up with a system which will greatly reduce the visibility and healing time of an (already blistered) cold sore.
Please let me know what you all think, or post comments on the blog too.
http://8-day-cold-sore-technique.blogspot.com/

I am finding that there is almost no practical information available for how to deal with a cold sore once it has already blistered.
( almost all coldsore websites simply state something like "...a blister, then scab, will form and last for about 10-12 days..."  :(  )
My hope is that the blog can help in this area.

I'm very happy to have found this forum, as it seems I am not alone in my frustration at the lack of useful/practical information.

I am very interested to hear any feedback, on the blog, material discussed, or any other useful ideas people have.
Thanks all!
B

PS:
while reading this forum, I noticed this other technique
http://killacoldsore.blogspot.com/
I would be very interested if anyone has tried this.
I'm also interested in not just the accelerated time frame, but also the visible impact of using this method.

PPS:
I have also just found this blog too!

In my experience, Zovirax provides the best relief. Next up is Famvir tablets but only if taken early on. L-Lysine is totally ineffective and just gives me really bad headaches. Your results may vary.

Last episode was not stress related. Thinking the trigger may have been the half gallon premium OJ I consumed the day prior.

Well, leaving with herpes is really painful.Sometimes you may feel embarrassed and awkward at public places. But you should not worry at all. I am here to help you out. Herpes specially cold sores can easily be cured with natural treatment. You can use ice pack on herpes. It gives soothing and calming effect. You can use baking soda to dry out sores and for getting relief from itching.Beside that jojoba oils, vitamin E, calendula and olive oil is helpful in repairing the skin after outbreak.

I have found that a specific diet and some dietary supplements (Lysine, zinc, vitamin C and N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) work really well for me.
I have been suffering from labial herpes for 25 years and since 3 years I'm almost cold sores free (1 or 2 ridiculous small ones).
There is an interesting article on how diet can influence cold sores (not a shameless plug, free info).
Yeah - but it's "free" info from a site run by a very commercially interested party - Sorry link deleted

Forget all these home remedies - Tea Tree Oil is the most effective cold sore treatment ever.

I get cold sores about twice a month and applying natural tea tree oil at around 10% or tea tree oil mixed with some other oils, such as lavender and royal jelly gets rid of the inflammation in about a day, max. Applying it at the prodrome (tingling stage), would literally prevent it from popping up.

Found some more proof on google about Tea Tree Oil effectiveness - link removed, just a few too many "buy it here" buttons for me to really believe that site was neutral - mod

The site above (not affiliated), has spot on treatment reviews. Acyclovir (Zovirax), like others mentioned here, has awful side effects for you... The best way is to go with a topical cream like tea tree oil or a branded one that's mixed with other anti-viral ingredients.

I too have found that ice (if used early enough) is a miracle "cure" for a cold sore. I hold it on as long as possible, at least 5 minutes at a time for 20-30 minutes. When I read this tip initially, it said that the reason it works is because it weakens the virus to the point of not being able to spread to healthy cells, so just use this visual as your lip feels numb to the point of falling off and it will help you stick with it! In addition, I take Acyclovir (my doc gives me a prescription with a few refills b/c I usually get 2 or 3 sores every winter) and L-lysine 3-4 times a day. Also, when the lesion is first forming (or I miss it for too long and it really gets visible) I'll pierce it with a sterile needle (probably shouldn't suggest this b/c it's probably not too safe but desperate times call for desperate measures and I want to help others by sharing what works for me) and then alternate topical treatments including Denavir (prescription) and Abreva and Reliev (both OTC). The Abreva works best early on and the Reliev tends to dry it out more once a lesion has fully formed. The last time I had a sore, I woke up with a lesion that was visible to me and definitely well on it's way and it was gone within 48 hours using this routine. After it goes away, stick with the treatments for a few extra days to really make sure you kick it. P.S. I've never had side affects with Acyclovir and L-lysine, just for the record of anyone who's hesitant based on previous posts.

Hi, so I normally don't get cold sores. In fact, I can't remember the last time I had one. But oddly enough I woke up with one beginning to form on my face about two days ago. Since I haven't gotten one in so long, it's been a learn as you go process.

My method so far has been to apply Zovirax (the second I noticed a vague bumb, I used it) and occasionally peroxide. Yesterday (Day 2) I tried the ice method which seemed to aid in the healing process, though I don't get them frequently enough to compare to other methods. I also gently pierced it with a sterile needle to drain it a bit and proceeded to clean it with peroxide and took l-lysine pills. Now (Day 3) it's yellow and beginning to crust. The day has just started so I have yet to decide how to go about this stage.

I figured I would share my method so far in case it ends up being effective for anyone.

I too think ice works for cold sores, I also take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofin, and I think that helps, plus rubbing alcohol to keep it sterile and to dry it up. I've also tried applying retin-a, since it supposedly speeds up skin cell turn-over. When I do all these things, the sore goes away in 3-4 days instead of 5-8. As far as prevention goes, try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth during cold and flu season, jump on a fever if you do get sick, don't get sleep deprived, and wear sunscreen especially early in the year, since those are usually the triggers. Some people claim acidic foods trigger it for them, but I haven't noticed that myself.

Whey Protein Shake Mixes usually have about 3000 mg of Lysine in each 30mg serving.  If you get a 2 lb bin of it, for $40, it's a pretty decent serving of lysine.

I went about 1.5 years without one, then realized that the only thing I'd changed was adding this to my diet.

After years of suffering from cold sores, here is my method to get rid of them in less than 24 hours:
At first sight of tingling put ice on the affected area for 15-20 mins. Repeat a few times.
After put Tea tree oil - it dries up the cold sore. Repeat every 2 hours.
I also use L-Lysine pills and Lysine+ lip ointment, but I honestly don't think it's essential if you catch the cold sore in the developing stage.
I usually alternate between Tea tree oil and the Lysine+ ointment, but as I said I think you can skip the Lysine.  Ice and Tea tree oil should be enough to take care of the problem.
Good luck! This method works for me, I hope it will help you.

I had not had a cold sore in 3 years and then all of a sudden, last week, I developed a really good one above my lips.  I wondered what I had been doing different that had thwarted off the outbreaks.  I realized that almost three weeks ago I had neglected to pick up all my fruits and vegetables from the store that I use to make my juice. I typically make a gallon on Sunday and drink about 8 or so ounces in the morning Mon-Friday.  I had gone three weeks w/o my regimen which for the main intent is to maintain a consistent weight.  I started juicing nearly 3 years ago.  This recipe below could have acted as a preventative measure all this time w/o my knowledge.  Here is the recipe (for one gallon)

2 bushels of kale
2 stocks of celery
4 lemons
6 apples
a slice of ginger root (the size f your thumb)
4-5 cucumbers
10-12 strawberries

Ice works for me but it's messy.  I use a towel but the towel gets wet quickly..

Any great idea on making it less messy?

Denavir works for me too.

There is a Blistix version of Abreva on sale in the UK and Australia.  Has anyone tried that ointment?

I have been getting pesky cold sores since my Grammy kissed me with an active sore before she knew they were contagious.  I was 10, I'm now 42.  I decided to try ice this time on the premise that viruses thrive in heat.  I woke up and saw a reddish bump starting on my upper lip Monday morning, UGH.  The tingling must have come while I was sleeping.  I immediately got a cube of ice and held it directly on the area for 15-20 minutes.  Then I took 1500mg of lysine(to balance out the arginine which contributes to the sore), 2 - 600mg garlic(natural antibiotic/antiviral and immunity booster), 1 Vitamin B complex with 100mg of each major B vitamin(helps immunity and healing), 1 500mg turmeric capsule(natural anti-inflammatory) and 1000mg Vitamin C.  I drank a ton of water, repeated the ice ritual every half hour for 2 hours and then repeated the above mentioned supplements every 4-6 hours.  By 6pm the initial swelling had almost completely disappeared.  No blister ever developed.  I woke up today and to my utter delight found only a slight pinkish dot on my lip.  It never throbbed on tingled.  I pricked a Vitamin E capsule and dabbed it on the area before work and continued to do so throughout the day to moisten my lips instead of chapstick.  Tonight there is only a slightly raised area.  No sore, no blister, no pain, no scab.

I am beyond thrilled.  I know they are common but anything on a person's face is unsettling.  Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Hey my name is Kayla and I'm an 18 year old girl who's been getting cold sores since about 5th grade.
I read some of the notes and noticed that a lot of people suffer from horrific cold sores like I do, and thought it might be worth it to share how I treat mine.
So right away when I feel or see a cold sore coming I get a wash cloth and run part of it under warm water, then put antibacterial soap on it (antibacterial soap is VERY important!) Then I GENTLY massage the infected area until all the fluid has been cleared out. Next I ice it for about 15-20 minutes (depending on the size) and after that I put peppermint oil on it! I repeat these steps as much as I think is necessary and it works like a charm! I hope it helps!

... then put antibacterial soap on it (antibacterial soap is VERY important!)
It may help prevent a bacterial infection, but a cold sore is caused by a viral infection, which won't notice antibacterials...

Just sayin'  [???]

You'll find tons of information out there on how to get rid of cold sores faster. A cold sore (or fever blister) is caused by the Herpes Simplex virus and will not go away until your body fights the virus.

Supplements like idol lips can help shorten the duration and over-the-counter lip plumpers (http://www.thebeautyinsiders.com/lip-plumpers) can also be helpful.

Other than that, it mainly has to run it's course - and don't touch it because your hand can spread the virus. You especially don't want a herpes infection in your eye(s).

There is some evidence that compounds present in garlic can help to reduce the severity of a cold sore. A number of pharmaceutical companies have been pursuing this line for a while to identify the agent and market it in a form that doesn't make you stink or repel vampires.

I think using ice can help reduce blisters or cold sores, but I don't know about preventing them from returning. Applying ice can help reduce the size and irritation of blisters or cold sore though.

Hi everyone. I have just spent the last hr reading everyones post about these vicious monstets that are name cold sores. My daughter is getting over the worse outbreak I have ever seen in my life. She ran a fever for 5 days and. had several sores on her lips, gums and tongue. Due to her pain inside her mouth she drooled all day long. Along with her drooling she was sneezing. However, I now have 1 in the corner of my mouth. I have never had 1 there. I am afraid that her drooling on  and constant sneezing in my face I am in some deep trouble. I am going to try this ice cube method.Im hoping that it works given the gact it is just the little tiny bubbles right now and Easter is 5 days away. I do not want to isolate myself from the family dinner because this monster has appeared.

Also, there is a book out 'get rid of cold sores' this author claims that you can get rid of cold sores not only in 8-48hrs but permanately. Has anyone heard of her technique? Have anyone actually tried it?

There is no cure for cold sores, yet.  You can try vitamin C, lysin to improve your immunity which can reduce outbreak and use Abreva or Denavir or one of the anti-viral pill to control the outbreak.

People have recommended lysin but don't take too much or you might get gall stones.

Use sun screen and don't get exposed to the sun too much.

I too, have the curse of the cold sore. I called in sick this morning because this one is going to be a doozy!
I have been taking a daily dose of 6000 mg of L-lysine for over a year now and have had 2 cold sores that "tingled" but never became more than a bump for a day. I eat dark chocolate, peanuts, cashews and potato chips daily. I also exercise daily for an hour to 2 hours. I am in above average physical shape for a man of 50.
My flare up now is due to a combination of events, the perfect storm so to speak: a very stressful week at work and I started a new weightlifting regimen that includes creatine and whey protein shakes. The whey shake has 480 mg of arginine in it.
So today I am doing the ice trick every hour, upping my lysine to counteract the arginine, peroxide and Abreva.

I know it sounds a bit 'new-age' but there is some evidence that propolis has an antiviral effect.

You can get a cold sore cream in New Zealand called Herstat which is mostly vaseline and propolis.  It's been clinically tested and seems to cut the recovery time down by a couple of days compared with other cold sore creams (according to the double blind placebo controlled trials. You can buy it in the UK, but only online.

Title: Have you tried Dry Ice for curing cold sores?
Post by: DryIce on 27/03/2016 05:54:26
Dry Ice Will Kill the Herpes Virus Dead  I had a nasty large cold sore on my lip. It left and then would stay like a red dot on my lip. Then it would come back. When it came back i was going to purchase a cryo gen nitrogen gun but it was 800 bucks. Then i saw a video on removing freckles with dry ice. Dry Ice is so cold it kills layers and layers of skin Dry ice removes sun spots freckels skin cancer skin tags and warts being the hardest. 3-5 seconds for freckles. More for the rest. I observed my lip was trickled from top to mid lip. I froze off all parts of the inside and above areas. Painless. 30 days later the area was bright white and then the rough skin fell off to reveal a refreshing new look for my face. If the red dot comes back i will freeze it again. Dry Ice is about 10 bucks and various grocery stores carry it. Since there are other uses i suggest maybe removing any unwanted parts of your skin discoloration including under ur eyes and behind your ears for a nice new start. My only other success story has been oil of oregano. It comes in pill oil and spray. U should buy it in the spray to spray your throat to prevent having to do the back of your throat with the ice. Oil of Oregano is the most powerful solution to yeast infections in the mouth . i drink like a party penguin so occasionally i get oral thrush which is also part of the mouth area and caused by a horde of yeast found in beer. Thank u. Picking up dry ice in the store u need a cooler and 2 beach towels bust the ice on the ground and use a towel to grab the small pieces for use. Do not touch dry ice. Use a flatter piece if possible as u need the entire area. Everyone is different and my experience is that 10 seconds is more than enough. Thank u.

In my experience, the fastest way to get rid of cold sores is to totally ignore them and not try to doctor them. When I was a teen, and I would feel a cold sore coming on, I would try to doctor it with home remedies. I was embarrassed. I was constantly looking in the mirror, to see how bad it was getting; self consciousness. It seemed to get worse the more I touched it and fixated on it.

One year, when I started to get a cold sore, I decided to gave up trying to doctor and cure it. I also decided, I do not care if I look like a leper for a week or two and my friends poked fun at me. By totally ignoring it, it never developed, and went away in only a few days.

From then on, that has been my strategy. When I feel a cold sore coming, which is not as often, but usually in the winter, I will not allow myself to even look at it in the mirror, nor will I touch it. I try to pretend it is not there. Within a day or two it stops growing and starts to reverse.

Cold sores come from the herpes simplex virus. The virus appears to be induced by stress; nerves. When you doctor and cater to the cold sore, you are unconsciously adding to the stress, helping the virus. The ignoring is about lowering the stress. One preventive measure is taking a stress formula multivitamin; vitamins C and B complex. This lowers the impact of winter stress on the skin and nerves.

Stumper makes a very good point about diet. In the event that you are feeling burdened or have the least bit of the tingling frosty sore aura ABSOLUTELY claim off all chocolate especially dark chocolate until you are well out of fever blister harms way. Peanut butter, nuts and red grapes flame the fires of any cold sore too. If you are a chocolates fiend limit your intake even on your good weeks to lessen the likelihood of a sore beginning. These kinds of foods are high in arginine and fever montage absolutely love it. Inexpensive and important is the ingestion of daily lysine to counterbalance the arginine.

Yes ice can and does work I've seen them work with combination of a few other  things mentioned above lysine, and rubbing alcohol get the highest strength or use couple others I've noticed work .

All good advice but you have to figure out what works best for you. some OTC stuff helps but may not for some,  plus side affects.

1 Keep low Stress , high stress will trigger it many times ie; big fight with spouse or someone, or worries etc
2 health diet sleep all contribute
3 find you pre-symptoms you have ie; pain tingle burning in arm leg or other act ASAP!  l-lysine ice all the spots where pain tingle usually along the nerve lines, but dont freeze your skin , semi crushed ice in 2 ziploc 5-10 mins then off. bags always leak don't they.
4. refrain from sex and masturbation for a few days or it can aggravate and make last longer .if you have symptoms or pre-symptoms wait until they go away.

Garlic
Garlic also used as home remedies for herpes. Garlic contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which facilitate combat outbreaks. Garlic contains a chemical compound known as allicin which cures many skin diseases including herpes. Garlic oil also included in an antiviral compound.

Baking Soda
Baking soda is a natural antiseptic and soothes your skin. Baking soda dries the skin surface quickly and heals the sores.

Hello, I am currently running an experiment on myself with cold sores and DRY ICE and will be making posts over the next year to see if i can kill the head of the virus for good.
Long story short, I was given the gift that keeps on giving from a X girlfriend 4 years ago and have been searching for a way to kill, or at least hold the sores at bay with hope to live life without lysine, chapstick, oil, or any quick fix also to eat/ drink whatever i want without worry.
I have 3 cold sores now and have used every trick in the book to help and nothing will help from spreading. I read a thesis about cold sore laser therapy and most say after 7 sessions you might not ever get them again because the head of the virus can die. I am willing to spend the money but would like to find a way to cure them without spending a years salary on the therapy. I believe if lasers (hot) can kill the head that Dry Ice (very cold) can do the same.
I just ran to the store and got one pound of dry ice for 2 $, held a fracture of the dry ice to my cold sores for 10 seconds each. (this burns... a lot) then used tea tree oil on my cold sore locations so my skin will not blister up and will heal without scars. My lips now burn like HE11, I took 3 ibuprofen for the swelling and the pain.
I will not be using lysine anymore or any diet plan over the year, only ice and dry ice. I will keep you posted on the results.

Also a random note: please read up on lysine and consider not taking it due to health problems. My cholesterol went way up and also started to develop gul stones.
, any questions please feel free to contact me on my email.

Vanilla is a natural cold sore remedy. The fact is that vanilla extract is alcohol dependent which kills the virus, which develops cold sores. This helps to reduce further outbreaks that may cause the infection. Try to use organic vanilla as much as possible.
Soak a cotton ball in vanilla.
Apply the cotton ball directly to the affected area.
Keep it for about a minute or so
Repeat this cold sores treatment at least four times in a day.

I work for a company that make a propolis based cold sore treatment.  Apparently propolis is used by bees in the hive as an anti-bacterial and anti-viral.  It may be worth a try, but ultimately all of the cold sore cures just reduce the recovery time, it's your own immune system that does the work.

I use lemon to treat cold sores, lemon can help you fight the infection of cold sores. To take advantage of its benefits, simply apply a few drops of its juice directly on the affected area about 3 times a day. But it hurts lol.

Add zinc supplements to your diet. It acts as a boon to get rid of genital herpes. Zinc is a vital part of most of the proteins and enzymes. Also, it can deactivate herpes virus elements. Thus, this important mineral reduces the discomfort and speeds up the healing of sores. Foods rich in zinc are spinach, beef, kidney beans, shrimp, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, oyster, watermelon seeds, garlic, oysters and egg yolk. Besides taking zinc supplements, you can also use zinc ointment.

Baking soda has the property to absorb moisture. If the sores are oozing or moist, you will find baking soda very helpful to treat your condition. Just take a teaspoon of dry and fresh baking soda and apply it to the affected part. Repeat this for a few days

Been getting cold sores for around 15 -20 years.

Seems I get Cold Sores every November - and sometimes they go right into Christmas if I am not lucky.  I might get one, which then heals, followed by a second bout, which in all is about a month with the bloody things.

I can sometimes nip them in the bud, but more often than not, they break and I am left with a sore for 2-4 weeks.

I recently got a cold sore in my nose that was really irritating.  I had hoped that it would perhaps avoid me getting one on my lip, but no such luck.  One started on my lip, remnants of which can be seen in my pictures below.  I had that one for about 2 weeks, and sure enough, another one started yesterday as the old one is just about done.  So, I read this info on the ice cube, as I had read about ice treatment before, so I am giving it a shot.  Like I said, the tingling started yesterday afternoon, so I did not get ice in right away.  Been about 12-16 hours.

So, I have literally put an ice cube in a sandwich baggie and held it on my sore until the cube melted.  Took a break for 5-10 minutes, then applied it again.  Did this 3 times.  The result is that the sore is actually more pronounced now, as if I have skipped the initial 2-3 days of the blister, and gone straight to the sore/scabby bit.  No big deal, as I am going to get that anyway.  Just saying.  It did not eliminate the sore, which I rather did not expect anyway.

I read through the blog linked above on isopropyl alcohol (IA).  So i figure any and all methods might work in combination.  I have a few IA swabs (they are only 70%) my wife got from work (nurse).  I decided to tape a swab to my sore for about 15 minutes. So for the past hour, I have attacked this creature on my face.  Finaly, I also have some 100% pure tea tree oil that I have had for a while that I will gently swab with a q-tip, once I remove the IA swab.

So, in summary, I have iced for about an hour in total.  And had a swab taped to my face for about 15 minutes.  And I am soon going to apply tea tree oil.

In lieu of any real photographic evidence on this board, I am going to post a picture of my lip, if I can.  To be honest, the sore is definitely more pronounced now, than it was before I started this entire icing process.  If this just means I will have a sore for a week even, then it would be better than nothing. Nonetheless, the ice has not made the thing disappear.  Rather the opposite. Like it has promoted the cold sore through the initial stage.

I will apply some tea tree oil, and provide feedback.  As well as some more pix later.  If I am being honest, I think I am going to have this thing 2 more weeks.
