i'm hoping i'm asking the right people here! i have always noticed that my hair takes a ridiculously long time to dry after i have washed it, and recently my hairdresser confirmed this. why is this? is it the thickness of my hair or something to do with my individual strands of hair!? do they hold water more then other people's hair? why why why??? [?]

Is your hair particularly fine, or coarse? Have you dyed it a lot? Do you have a lot of it? Do you let it dry in a pony tail - that takes days this time of year etc.

My eldest daughter has long thick hair which also takes forever and a day to dry , whereas my other daughter, her hair is very fine and dries quite quickly. I reckon it's the thickness of your hair...I'm afraid that's the price you pay for hirsute happiness !!

Have you never noticed that on some days the air seems "wetter" than on others? This is referred to as being humid. The higher the humidity, the wetter the air. Sweating is the body's way of removing excess heat. However, on a humid day the air is already saturated with water so the sweat stays on you. That's why humid heat always seems hotter than the same temperature in a "dry" heat.
In effect, the atmosphere acts like a sponge and absorbs the water by the process known as evaporation. In order for evaporation to take place the humidity of the atmosphere must be less than the evaporating surface. So, if the relative humidity is 100%, evaporation will not take place.
The rate of evaporation depends on temperature and wind, as well as humidity.

thanks everybody! there is obviously no cure! i do have quite thick hair and it has been dyed so that maybe doesn't help. at least i won't go bald so easily i hope! [:)]

Laura - sorry I'm so late to the party, no net connection at home... the fact that your hair takes so long to dry is actually a sign that it is very healthy. When your hair is healthy it is actually quite porous, and so will retain water for a lot longer than if it were heat/chemical damaged. A lot of people who have permed/coloured hair have very brittle hair, that retains far less water, but that means it dries very quickly. On the other hand, you (and I) both have very thick hair, that retains water and is very healthy (let me guess, you have quite lustrous hair, and you suffer from fly aways quite a bit - or if you have curls, you get a good dose of the frizz? I do!). The price you pay for good healthy hair, but it is well worth it!
And as for the power hair dryer... When I go to the salon, it takes the hairdresser an hour to dry my hair and I assume she has a power drier. I just tell her to take the dampness off and then let it dry naturally. Two things - yes the power drier will dry your hair faster, but as a side effect it will also start to heat damage your hair, thereby increasing the speed at which it dries as it slowly becomes drier (when I say drier, I don't mean drying out today, I mean long term drying!) letting your hair dry naturally is the nicest thing you can do to it, as long as you can put up with it! I know there have been times when I put my hair in a pony tail in the morning and it is still wet at the roots when I go to bed at night!

let your hair air dry. dont let modern commodities damage your locks. just take less showers!

What a dryer! Wow! I need one of those..lol My hair has the same issue when washing it...but alas, we have a high rate of humidity here too! :-(
