Post by: neilep on 10/09/2007 20:48:17
Dearest Wind Warriors.

See this piccy of two girlies on the beech ?

Nice isn't it ?....notice how windy and non-dark it is ?

3:30am this morning I went and sat in the garden....boy was it quiet !!..not even a rustle in the leaves.......

..I've noticed this many times !

Is it a correct generalisation to assume that it's more windy during the day ?

If, so Why's that then ?

I have found that true on many occasions but not all! We get nights here that are so windy it blows the roofing off the house but dies down in the daytime! Mostly the other holds true .. but now and again whooosh look out!

I went out and took a lot of pictures of that the following few days..the aftermath was extraordinary.

Hmmm..perhaps hurricanes are the exception here !!

We get just as much wind at night as we do during the day, sometimes more.  Course.....it could be cos we live on the coast. During hurricane season the winds at night can be quite fierce and you can hear the waves pounding.  It can be rather frightening.

Generally you get more wind during the day, the reason why Caroline may notice  more wind at night is because it is generally quieter and you may be sat at home and take more notice of it as opposed to during the day when you are busier.

The winds are caused by the sun, and it's heating of the earth's surface. The warm air over the land expands and rises, and the heavier, cooler air rushes in to take its place, thus creating wind.

Although if you live in the mountains, you may experiance more wind at night due to air drainage.

Perhaps I'm just under the illusion that we are more up during the day than at night !!....myself excluded.... but I don't get out much in the early a.m !

Thanks Karen

i must have skimmed over this part of your reply, Caroline. In this case you substitue the heat of the land for the heat of the ocean.

Hurricanes or tropical storms are caused by warm ,humid air rising over the tropics. As the warm air rises it cools and the resulting moisture condenses to form clouds and rain drops.

When the hurricane reaches land it typically loses the tropical moisture and all of it's energy.

The hurricane of 1987 was during the night. Enough said.

That may hold true because the hurricane we had here started as mild wind in the day and by night it ripped through at more then 101 miles per hour ripping things out of the ground bursting big widows uprooting trees and flipping cars over! It was truely awesome scary event! exhilerating to!

But the hurricane did not "just happen" at night, sure enough you may experiance a mild wind beforehand but that does not mean it is windier at night. Hurricanes are formed by lots of thunderstorms joining to become one large cyclonic system.

A hurricane is different to wind.

Paul - what you say is, of course, correct. But the vast majority of the damage caused by the '87 hurricane was done at night.

I appreciate that is only 1 instance and that we in the UK should be thankful that we don't get the full force of hurricanes as happens in the Caribbean and southern USA.

Doc, you too are right (love in moment..ahhh). The majority of the damage was done at night, but i think we have to differentiate hurricanes from general wind.

In general it is windiner during the day, there will always be "blips" in the data and we will have a storm at night, but this is not generally the case.

The reason why we have wind, hurricanes and tornadoes are all different. In this case i am referring to wind as generally experienced in the UK.
