James Smith asked the Naked Scientists:
I am learning so much, so fast, and I love it. I don't come from a scientific background. When I was young, I remember my dad changing his major from Business to Psychology because it required the least amount of math classes. Not only that but they grew up in a very industrious age, so both of my parents grew as hard working folks who did what they could to make ends meet. I knew that there was a better way to live, so I got married, moved 1,200 miles away, and began searching for that better way. Hopping around from job to job, I ended up doing the same things my parents did, so my wife and I sat down and discussed how to escape the cycle.Â
I decided to go back to school, and go for a degree in chemical engineering. Talk about shooting for the moon with my little pea-shooter, I'm currently taking my first chemistry class for the third time. But it's very important to me, If for no other reason, it will offer more opportunities for my future kids to have a bright and educated future. One evening, I was searching for something on the internet, and saw a link to your show, and I've been hooked ever since. Being exposed to all of the science on your show has given me more confidence in becoming a scientist. I put every episode I have (from November 2006 to the preseent) onto a CD, and I play them in the car, in the house, in the shower... everywhere. I have a much easier time understanding how everything is interrelated in the science world, and this association is helping me see a clearer picture as I study the basic principles in my chemistry class.
My sincerest thanks to all of you. Please, keep up the good work.
While, I'm here, do you have any expert advice for some excellent resources that will help me with my chemistry (understanding nomenclature, stoichiometry, and other formulas)?
James Smith
