Do you believe in UFOs?
-
I do !
-
YES!
-
as in ones that have come to earth and interacted with humans? No
-
No I don't belive in UFOs they are all made up things from people's over-active imagination.

A metal vehicle just cant travel around the universe light speed makes this an impossibility
However A friend and I once saw a cloud like object that did not move in relation to the other clouds. It was green in colour fringed with red and very very beautiful ,so beautiful my froend began to weep.
Our respective wives both said we made up the story and 30 years later are still convinced we were deluded or worse.
Maybe these objects are right next to us, just separated by a portals into other dimensions/ Who knows but there must be some explanation for them
Regards
Alan

Genuine objects that are flying and not readily identifiable are reported regularly.
It is a mistake to assume that because they aren't immediately recognisable that they are from another part of the Universe.
Does anybody remember von Daniken? "Scientists/Archaeologists can't explain it therefore it must be aliens" - well it's that kind of thinking. [::)]

Well, I'm convinced !!
But are ewe sure it just wasn't a great big jet engined spinach pizza ?
It happens y'know !

Possibly this type of cloud ...

These lenticular clouds are probably responsible for "flying saucer" type "UFO" sightings.

Alan what do Aeroplanes and Helicopters do then?
Fly in the air. And they are paid for with mainly public money unless these vehilcles are privately owned.

Rosalind - I think Alan's problem was with light speed flight, not flight itself. At least I assume so, if he's proposing that planes can't really fly I think we'll have to send that post to 'New Theories'!

Everey time wifey cooks that's an UIO (Unidentifiable Inedible Object)
Your wife cooks????????? Wow, I wish I had one of those. [:-'(]
The first and last time 'er indoors made (I mean tried to make) pastry, there were some very identifiable flying object in our kitchen, most collided with the wall and took a hammer & cold chisel to get them off. [:o)]
But seriously, I agree with Rosalind "they are all made up things from people's over-active imagination."
If there are other beings out there, and I have no reason to doubt there are, I doubt we will ever meet. The distances between systems such as ours which can support life are far too great. As for worm holes, transporter beams, warp drive and so on, these are best left to Star Trek & Dr Who. Pure speculation elevated into the realms of fantasy.

As I have just written in another thread transportation of matter or rather a copy of matter has been done scientifically. The problem is we would have to have the same tech. on earth that the aleins have on their planet in order to receive a transported alien. Also transmission of the data for a whole body would take a very long time but if the aliens had better tech. they may be able to transmit data quicker.
First contact would have to be made before transportation could occur.
I don't rule anything out but I do like proof.

Ben that might the right point but I know that airplanes do and can fly as I see the airplanes go over/near my home daily.
Noisy too.

Surely a consequence of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncertainty_principle) is that making an exact copy of anything is impossible.

Read the other thread in the new theories section. This problem is solved by quantum entanglement. I'm not a quantum physicist but I think two entangle particles will be opposite to each other so if you know what one is you will know the other is the opposite. This means you can measure one particle without changing it as you are actually examining its opposite.
Try this

Teleportation hypotheses involving quantum entanglement seem to imply that instantaneous (superluminal) communication is possible.
I'm sceptical about any theory which predicts that something (even information) could travel faster than the speed of light.
-
Physicists have teleported a few subatomic particles across their lab.
A conservative estimate is that using an 8 meg broadband connection, transmitting an entire human body would take about 40,000 billion years.
which is nice !
As far as travelling faster than the speed of light, I heard somewhere, in fact I think it was good old P Moore speculate that the only thing that might travel faster than the speed of light is the expansion of the Universe. His, remark was a retort against a statement that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light within the Universe.
I think it was him !

I dont believe in UFO's .
Foot odour is a common problem and is usally caused by sweaty feet and can normally be combated by better hygiene practices. [;)]

Don I thought that I was the only person, who had similar feelingss about the UFO's stories.
I know that Patrick Moore is well-known in the Astronomical circles
and on BBC TV as well but it's nearer to quantum sciences.
I agree that UFOs are best kept for TV or sci-fi book fiction
than in the reality of life. IMO.
(Which Rosalind doesn't understand)

Reading that made me weep.

My whole family noticed one last night night at around about 10:30 pm . It was quite strange and reminded me of an egg.
My Daughter tried to say it was produced by me ,however as it was a silent one and we couldn't determine from where it came,we decided to officially log it as a UFO. A unidentified Fart Odour
-
Guys I said it was a greenish cloud like object, decidedly not a helicopter or aeroplane
But I also stated that it was an object of some sort, I did not say UFO or spaceship

The way you ask the question gives away your position. You chose the word believe. This implies that you have no data. If you had data, you should be able to produce the evidence and others should be able to verify your results or come to the same conclusions. In this case, the answer is obvious.
Regarding the larger questions:
1. Is it possible that life exists elsewhere in the universe? I would suggest that given the enormous number of stars and planets the probability is quite high. Thus, my answer is based solely on a statistical argument.
2. Is it possible that earth has been visited (within the past few thousand years) by beings from another world? I would again, refer to the observational data (the vast distances between the stars and our current understanding of the laws of the universe). Based on this data, I would suggest that the probability is extremely low.
I would discourage anyone from using the word "believe" or similar term to express a conclusion or to put forth a scientific argument. The term is founded in philosophy and carries personal biases into the discussion. Thus, any conclusions based on "belief" are subject to scrutiny.
-
I agree. The only time you would be justified in making a subjective choice is when neither of the two alternatives has a really clinching argument or data. (Or if you really fancy one of the protagonists)
