Title: Our twin universe?
Post by: Mad Mark on 17/01/2006 02:50:01
At the moment of creation did our universe create a twin? One where time flows backwards and gravity pulls it out?
I would like to meet my opposide ,what a strange character he would be!

Tomorrow lies outside our universe without it there would be no tomorrow.

This could be bad news for those trying to get a grand theory of everything as we would only ever have half the answers.

Tomorrow lies outside our universe without it there would be no tomorrow.

Or the TOE would have to include the other half, as hypothesis, as its existense could only be implied, not theoretically disproven. (Scientific theories can only be disproven!).

There are theories in which there are an infinite number of parallel universes, (not just two):-

Sounds like the hypothesis Einstein and Rosen developed--The Einstein-Rosen Bridge.

Yeah, one interpretation of QED is that for every possible change for every possible quanta of spacetime, energy and mass in the universe a new universe comes into existence, the many worlds as against the many paths!!!! (they may be virtual). Let alone the many ideas associated with the concepts of multiverse and the anthropic principle both seperate and combined.

The universe was created in a quantum fluctuation.  It hasn't grown since, it's just complexifying.  Our half was what we would call the positive particle in this quantum fluctuation, the other half was the 'negative' (though they probably put it the other way round).

That's what I think anyway.

And every quantum fluctuation in our universe is another universe being born then dieing as the pair re-anhialate(sp?) again.

Are you really mad, Mark?  Are you sure?

This topc belongs in the mad ideas section and has little founding in physics

Well, it seems that matter/energy does not just spring into being.  The only way it kind of does is if there is no net change in the amount of energy, ie a matter/anti-matter quantum fluctuation.  So it's at least a possibility that our universe has an opposite twin right?  Though how it affects us is hard to see.

I can understand the attraction of symmetry in the relationships but current thinking and experimentation explains the preponderance of matter over antimatter in a universe that oricinally contained equal quantities of both so there is no need to propose the existence of a twin universe for the antimatter so apply occam's razor.

The Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) otherwise known as the Everett interpretation, has been defended by such prominent physicists as Stephen Hawkings & Steven Weinberg, although neither of these men regard the theory as more than a mathematical formalism. Other physicists notably David Deutsch do ascribe physical reality to the innumerable parallel universes and believe that anything that can happen must have happened in many of those universes.

According to MWI the wave function does not collapse -- every quantum state really exists in some universes.

Personally though it does seem ridiculous to propose infinite parallel universes interacting in the right way to create the right results such as "quantum" interference without other interaction.

DAVID DEUTSCH is the founder of the field of quantum computation. Paul Benioff, Richard Feynman, and others had written about the possibility of quantum computation earlier, but Deutsch's 1985 paper on Quantum Turing Machines was the first full treatment of the subject, and the Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm is the first quantum algorithm.
