Title: the known universe
Post by: Hadrian on 02/05/2006 15:42:38

How far is the edge of the known universe from us in miles?

What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.

Oh, is that all Hadrian ?

Well, the age of the universe is something along the lines of between 13-15 billion years, so, take the distance that light travels in one year which equals 97761600000 miles then multiply it by (lets take the average)14000000 years =

1368662400000000000 miles

Awaits confirmation by the experts....

You're still having problems with your billions.

Taking your figures, 14 billion is 14 x 10^9.

Light travels at about 186,000 miles/second.

There are about 31.55 million seconds in a year, thus light travels about 5.87 x 10^12 miles/year.

5.87x 10^12 x 14 x 10^9 = 8.218 x 10^22 miles.

In fact, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_the_Universe, the age of the universe is 13.7 × 10^9 years.

Thus the figures would be 13.7 x 10^9 x 5.87 x 10^12 = 8.0419 x 10^22.

About 8 billion miles (long scale – European and old English usage) or 8 trillion miles (short scale – American usage), or 8 teramiles (SI prefix).

..actually, I think the size of the Universe is about a couple of hundred miles...everything after that figure is an illusion ![:D]

Sorry, I must have been on another planet at the time.

Not 8 billion, but 80 sextillion (short), and 80 trilliard (long), or 80 Zetta (SI prefix).
