Title: Eating and Brain
Post by: quizolk on 02/06/2006 12:15:27
I am wondering if eating pattern and quantity affects our brain efficiency (particularly on studying) and if so how (never mind the nutrition of the food). For example, i find that i get sleepy after a full meal and find it relatively harder to concentrate. Thank you in advance for any replies.

there are many things at work in regards to your question. alot of body chemisty is effected by when and how much you eat. blood sugar, blood pressure, etc. and im sure whether food energizes or tires you is a result of one or all of those levels.

You're right there.

It's very common to feel sleepy after a meal as a lot of energy kicks in to start the digestion process. I think a lot of blood goes to that area too.

So, yes, your eating pattern certainly affects your state of mind......

...for the science...await one of the people who can answer this scientifically !!....not me of course !

Well the actual reason is that there is a apetite center in the hypothalamus in brain. It is controlling the hunger. when there is low blood glucose in ur body it is stimulated and u start feeling hungry and after taking the full mean this center is inhibited and there is another center in the hypothalamus "the satity" center, now it gets stimulated. As it is stimulated u will start feeling satisfaction and this is associated with other centers as well like the centers of  pleasure and also to reticular formation (which controls our alertness and awakefulness).
when the satity center is stimulated all these are stimulated and some gets inhibited and hence u fell drowsy and even ur BP falls and there is increase parasymp outflow. There are many other events not just sleepiness.
