Title: What is the Partition coefficient?

I am a final year Chemistry undergarduate. Got a small problem with the partiton coefficients and hydrophobicity constant. I got a log P of 1.3 for the phenol in octanol/water and 1.9 for nitrophenol. While reading a few books and articles I came across that the hydrophobicity costant of nitro group is a negative value but I also found that the log P values of phenol is 1.46 and 3-nitrophenol is 1.9. Can someone please explain this to me?
