My left foot had landed on, literally and figuratively, sweet fresh air. I took a major tumble into the ditch, beat up several parts of my body and skinned the extremely handsome Geezer knee on the asphalt (I was wearing shorts so that others could benefit from the view of the Geezer legs at the time).
Why's that then?
As it was such a nice warm day had you been partaking of the most refreshing beer prior to setting off? I have noticed, from personal experience, that this can induce mishaps of the type you experienced.
I may be forced to jump in the lake, which, no doubt, will please a lot of people.

Would I have to wear one of those flowery rubber hats?
