Title: ?what is it? fossilized tabulate coral or petrified honeycomb or?
Post by: kisatchie on 24/05/2011 17:35:23
i found this in a gravel bed of a stream in central louisiana. this area is called the kisatchie wold (sand and gravel hills). elevation approx. 250 ft., alot of petrified wood is also found in this area and stream itself.
the specimen is approx 2 1/4" x 1 1/2" x 3/4" thick
i was thinking petrified honeycomb because of the cell structure, color, and location, but i don't know.......

it may be fossilized coral..but it doesn't look like limestone.
it is solid honey colored and is not dull colored limestone.
i think it is more likely petrified honeycomb by look weight and texture.

Crack it open and see if the cells of the "honeycomb" have any dark spots. Those would have been baby bees. If there aren't any then it's probably coral.

How many instances of true authenticated fossilized honeycomb can you find on the internet ?.

[Do bear in mind that despite being called Earth our planet is mostly covered by water (where coral resides).]
