Title: Taste-aversion chemicals for cigarette smokers - homemade?
Post by: _Stefan_ on 18/08/2007 11:17:16
Hi guys,

I am looking for ways to make smokers develop an aversion to smoking cigarettes. The idea is to treat the mouth-part of the cigarettes with a foul tasting chemical without the smokers' knowledge.

I would like to know if such >safe< foul-tasting chemicals can be readily found, i.e. at home or in the supermarket. The chemical(s) must also be safe (to ingest/inhale) in the event that they react with substances found in the cigarette.

I am aware that there are products for this purpose on the market but I can't find any info on the internet, and visiting a pharmacy might be inconvenient.

Thanks in advance :)

YOU CANT MAKE SOMEONE GIVE SOMETHING UP THAT THEIR LEGALLY ENTITALLED TO DO.

If you were to find such a chemical and were found using it on smokers I'm pretty sure you would find your self in court on very serious charges .

Not to mention the private cases brought against you for damages by the civil liabilities groups, the people you targeted and the cigarette companies.

Ok Maybe i've gone over the top if you wish to use it  as a joke at parties etc but you have got to be careful as a safe chemical for one person maynot be so safe for another .The last thing you want is somebody vomiting on your sofa or worse.

Hi Stefan,

Do you have someone close by whose cigarettes you want to sabotage ?

How about dipping the ends in vinegar or even lemon juice ? ..though they might like the lemon....

I have to say, I'm stumped !!....I look forward to reading other peoples suggestions.

Actually the cigarettes are those of my parents whose poisonous air I am forced to inhale almost daily. Forgive me for disliking chest pains induced by cigarette smoke. And they'd never agree to the 'experiment' knowingly; They know it bothers me and they try to keep it away from me (sometimes) but it ends up diffusing throughout the house anyway. Unfortunately minors aren't sufficiently protected from smoke by law.

Stefan,

I would not really attempt to "lace" your parents cigarettes with anything, how could you be sure that whatever you used did not react badly to the numerous chemicals in them?

There are foods that can make cigarettes taste bad, so maybe changing to a healthy diet would be better.

water, juice, fruits and vegetables and dairy products can make cigarettes taste bad. If they smoke regular cigarettes (not menthol) then toothpaste can also work.

So maybe a change in diet and brushing their teeth when they have the urge to smoke would be better.

I can't help thinking that if water made cigaretes taste bad then, since we are mainly water, cigaretes would always tasset bad.
Oh, hang on, they do taste bad it's just that some people smoke them anyway.
I think that if stefan can't talk his parents int stopping smoking then he's going to have trouble changing their diets or toothbrushing.

BC, made the point i was coming back to. No matter how much you protest to a smoker, or tell them how harmful the habit is, it will not stop them.

They know the health risks and continue to smoke due to addiction or pleasue. The "advice" i gave above would only work if your parents wanted to give up.

If his parents are concerned that their smoke is harming him then it might sway them  !!...even for just a short while !...though it might just force them to designate a 'safe room' or a smoking room ' !!

..he does say he gets chest pains !

By the way...this is all in Non Argument Mode !!  [;)]

In any event, as a smoker myself. There is nothing you could put in my cigarette to stop me smoking, i would simply go and buy a fresh pack.

I know people who smoke illegally imported cigarettes, sometimes they taste and smell like...something not nice, and induce coughing.

They still smoke them, because they are cheap. A smoker is an addict, and must want to quit that addiction before any help can be given.

That was also in Non Argument Mode.

Well, thanks for the comments guys.

I've tried the guilt trips on them but it doesn't work. They've taken to smoking in the bathroom or garage but they don't open the windows even though I've told them numerous times, and the smoke just ends up spreading into the rest of the house. I've considered actually grabbing the cigarette out of their hand each time they light up. That should work, no? Or maybe a good spray with some water in the face. ha.

your parents are just that. your parents. i didn't like it when my parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles smoked around me (until i started) but they are adults. when you pay for the house, you can tell them what to do in it. until then, leave your bedroom window open, get a fan, and get used to it.

I will tell you how a friends son did it.

His parents smoked and they wouldn't ,couldn't give up.

So he bought a packet of fags and pretended that he had started smoking by walking through the house with a lit cigarette every now and again..

When they asked him if he had started smoking he said yes and it was their fault, as he started only because he was breathing in their smoke and so though he may as well smoke properly.

He then pretended to smoke alot by as often as possible having a lit cigarette IN his hand in front of his parents. (obviously he would light one and put it out and relight it again, they didn't know)

They got concerned due to the amount they thought he was smoking , he then blamed it all on them ,and then cleverly struck a deal he would try to give up if they would.

Which they agreed to, as they felt guilty and they all in the end gave up .  Obviously he didn't find it quite as hard to give up as it was for his parents  [;)]but he would make a good actor.

It was a friend of my son and daughter, I'm not that clever, Ive smoked for the last twenty years and at present I'm trying to give up and right this second I'm doing my best not to ask my son for one of his cigarettes to ease my struggle. [;D]
