Title: How do I save XP updates to disk for future use
Post by: JimBob on 16/05/2008 17:04:26
Hi all,

I am planning on re-formatting my boot disk and then reinstalling XP Pro this coming weekend bue to the OS's deterioration over the past three years. BUT since Microsoft will not support XP in the future and Vista is not very flexible, how do I save all downloaded updates from Microsoft so I will be able to burn them to disk for future use?

Or is there a site or group already dedicated to this endeavor?

Jimbob

You can download and save the service pack which contains all previous security patches and fixes released for Windows XP.

The new one is XP SP3

I usually just run the updates as soon as I've installed the OS. Last time it does three, then you have to run it again. It takes a couple of hours but you can just leave it running.

as ukmicky says, SP3 is with us now.

OK, Done. Now then, what else do I need to reinstall after Micro$oft stops supporting XP this June 1?

You can always to make life easier by making a slipstream version of xp by placing a copy of your xp cd in a folder of your hard drive.

You can then update the copy permanatly by applying the service pack to the copy and if you then burn that to a dvd along with the xpboot.bin which allows the cd to boot up you will have a permananant copy of xp sp3 and will  never have to apply any patches when you install

The above site explains how to make a updated xp install dvd containing service pack 2  but will also lend itself to making a copy of sp3 ,if you cant find the small xpboot.bin file on your original install dvd let me know and i will send you a copy as its only 2kb in size or get it from here

Is it illegal ,dont know but as you are only making a updated and permanant bootable backup of your xp disc that you have already paid for and not seling it or giving it to others does it really matter.

I found out last night that XP has updates to SP3. And they have already gone and released another piece of trash in it's place (VBista.) I just bought a new laptop with this junk on it and trying to set up a home network seems an impossibility. I will continue to try today.

I need all the heavenly help (or any other type of help) I can get.

Thanks for the links, Michael.
