Post by: Karen W. on 05/11/2007 21:42:40
Well I just found out that we have one here in Arcata! I have never heard of such a thing! Can someone explain this to me???

Is this a place I can go when I can't breathe???

I think it is exactly that, remember seeing these in then news a while back where people in Tokyo were visiting them to escape the road traffic fumes. Or just to boost the oxygen content of your blood. Make sure you don’t mix the oxygen with nail varnish remover or some other volatile solvent and ignite it with a little static from your hair or clothes as this will be the end of you and the oxygen bar. But I suppose there are safeguards against this happening right? Someone has thought this through and put signs up warning of releasing volatile vapour into a room full of enriched air. Probably just me thinking too far ahead again.

One of my girlfriends mothers swears by them. This woman is nearing 50 but doesnt look any older than 35, she credits oxygen. We had a pretty intesnive talk about it one night, and she told me that about 5 years ago she started noticing things going downhill (wrinkles and etc.) and a friend of hers told her about these places. So Em's mom went and hasnt stopped. You just breathe through a mask, they dont pump it into the air. And it is very controlled.

On a different note, an old boss of mine, who used to own a night club would pump oxygen into the air (like they do in casinos) to keep people awake and drinking.

Anybody remember the story about Michael Jackson deciding to sleep in an oxygen tent?
Anybody remember the papers pointing out that he must be nuts (or at least ill informed) because pure oxygen is toxic?
Oxygen is one of the more potent sources of free radicals in the body; these have ben blamed (with some reason) for part of the aging process.
If you can walk, rather than crawl or get carried, into the bar you probabaly don't need oxygen.

Please just send me half the money I have saved you and I promise to do real science with some of it
oK, I was idding about that last sentence.

(Incidentally, I presume that Elegantlywasted's gf's mother must have looked younger than her years at 45 unless she says it actually reversed the aging process. In that case she's probably just lucky that way.)

I guess its possible that her youthfulness is a coincidence. But she also told me it made her feel great, that I completley agree with.

I presume Mr Jackson thought the same.
Double blind trial anyone?

I would be worried although I have spent time in an oxygen tent as a young girl.. before we had masks and such also when I was a baby.. because I couldn't breath..

So Maybe I am not following the thread of this conversation well. Bored do you mean that it is not a good idea nor healthy thing to do such a thing?

There's a difference between someone with poor lung function breathing pure oxygen in order to maintain normal levels of oxygen in the blood and a normal person breathing it and getting elevated levels in their body (for any length of time).
It's the excess that causes problems.

I think going to an oxygen bar is a dumb way to waste money.

Ok I understand what you mean..

So average Joe walks up the new Oxygen bar has no idea what his oxygen saturation might be. He takes in a huge amount of this oxygen... what could happen if it were too much??? What are the symptoms of an oxygen overdose... or is that possible???

Unless he's in a high pressure tank there won't be any imediate effects; it's a long term thing.
