Title: Why put paper inside vases when you move?
Post by: dentstudent on 10/07/2007 08:46:58
I've never understood why (and I have to say I've only seen girlies do this) there would be any benefit to putting a couple of scrunched up pieces of newspaper into a vase to prevent it breaking when you're moving house. Put lots on the outside, sure, but why inside?

I don't know the only reason I ever did anything close to that was to stack another item inside the first and then the inserted item was wrapped on outside and used to pad against scratching vase or such.. with the other item!

Maybe if you stuff it so much.. The paper puts pressure on the vase, pushing outwards from inside, that when something bashes against it, it supports the pressure coming from the outside?

The glass prevents the paper getting damaged.

Yes it is, but it only stands if the force from the inside is equal and opposite to that on the outside. Most dinks come from edges and so on, and might be difficult to replicate on the inside of the vase.

I'm talking about maybe 2 pieces of tabloid inside the vase, and so wouldn't apply much in the waay of force to the vase itself.

Apparently

Glasses and Stemware:

For a glass or piece of stemware, initially wrap each piece loosely in a sheet of newsprint. Then, wrap the item more tightly in a second sheet. Glasses and stemware should always be stood on end in the dish pack. A paper collar is sometimes employed to provide additional support around an item before loosely wrapping it in a sheet of newsprint.

Stuff some crumpled newsprint inside a glass vase or pitcher to provide support to its sides. A fragile piece like this should be wrapped in bubblekraft or brown paper pads and packed in the top or second layer of the dishpack. Before sealing the moving box, put a layer of cushioning material on top of the glasses. However, be aware of overdoing the cushioning on the top of a box that contains extremely delicate stemware. The extra "protection" on the top of this type of a box may actually press down too much into the box, placing unnecessary and excessive pressure on top of the stemware.

we sell vases at work... and if you've got all day to do it, dan's method does work best... but when you have someone buying a hundred glass vases and they need to be in their car on the road in 5 minutes (after spending two hours shopping..) a piece of newspaper thrown around everything quickly and shoved into a box works just fine

Seems like  waste of time and energy unless it is to make sure items are ok and not damaged from shipment.. We had to do the same. We run a furniture business and always had to thoroughly check out items be fore putting them on the floor.

Yup.. So a little roll around in the van or something, or a little nudge from the other vases. That's all the paper would support. But maybe without it, it would crack, just from a little bump in a van?

I still don't see how a small amount of paper stuffed into a vase is going to stop it breaking! Where's kitchen science when you need it?

Pickfords don't use paper to pack vases. i would guess it's something our grandparents did and "we" just follow suit.

Well that would be if they had 100 of the same, non broken or chipped etc........not bloody likely [;)]

With anything breakable we would wrap them up in bubble wrap and try and cushion them with other objects (I used to work in a warehouse)

This is what I mean by specialist. This Train Engine was being transported to the Festival of Britain Site in the 1950s. The vehicle is being towed away from the camera by a tractor unit at the front. The little cab you can see is at the back and has a man in it to steer the rear end.

(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs26%2FDoctorBeaver%2FGL568266Pickfords-Transport-a-Diese.jpg&hash=8df841eea43a3aae1866e129d37bea15)

They also transport boats, aircraft fuselages & wings, power station turbines and all stuff like that.

This is a topic of some credible interpretations.

The most widely accepted notion is that girlies have an intuitive hormonal response when it comes to packing vases as the remnants of flowers , now widely recognised as( Inner Vase Stem Fairies ) are predominantly female.

These fairies congregate in clusters for comfort and security and have a canny ability to detect when their home is about to be moved. In concert, they exude hormones which are released and sensed by the olfactory senses in girly noses (which we all know are cute and shiny)…anyway….it triggers an instinct to seek out the ‘ woman’s section ‘ of a daily publication or perhaps a copy of ‘Womans World ‘…or in some fortunate cases a copy of ‘ So , Your Moving Home And You Need To Safely  Transport A Vase’ ISBN: 3335546473….in any case….said publications are inserted to into the neck of the vase…this offers a few benefits.

Firstly, the fairies have a place that feels nice and secure, secondly, it gives them a chance to put their feet up and enjoy a good read about the benefits of  handbag maintenance…but predominantly..it allows them just enough time to complete the one clue crossword…of which the clue is ‘ a two letter abbreviation meaning Artificial Intelligence in which each letter of the abbreviation is intself a single letter vowel word in it’s own right’………With the average trip between locales being 30-90 minutes…this leaves enough time for the fairies to finally figure the answer .

Sheesh !!..it’s obvious isn’t it ?

Glad I could help !

You are partially right.. When my back was killing me from moving three truck loads of furniture loads of furniture and boxes by myself.. I would sit down and wrap the breakables! LOL it helped rest my tired tailfeathers.. before bob would get home and help with the last load!  I pretty much did the moving for twenty years! And definitely the wrapping! LOL
