They said this week that the UK is so institutionally racist that we couldn't have a black Priminister. What do you think?

Who said that, was it a newspaper - do you know their source? And what does institutionally racist mean?
If it means that the institutions (army, police, NHS, civil service...) are inherently racist then that may impact upon voting figures - but as only about 30% of those eligible can be arsed to turn out anyway this may not be quite so significant. Don't forget, we elect parties who elect (or not) leaders.
Also, as far as I know, there are currently no prominent black politicians - although the TUC had a black leader not too long ago.

I think its a load of b*****ks myself, if someone who was black rose up from the ranks and was good enough to lead their party they would have just enough chance as someone who was white. In fact these days a black person would stand more chance against someone who is white as these days everything is geared up to promote and aid the minorites at the expense of others who leigitamatly should be given the same chance.
As for the police etc what really gets my goat is the uk organisation called the National Black Police Association , what would they say if someone started an association called the National white Police Association. Positive discrimination is a joke,if someone is good enough they would get their without extra help.
Sorry rant over.
By the way i'm mixed race before anyone calls me racist.

I'm sure there are a good number of people who wouldn't like the idea of a black PM, but like mentioned, I think if anything a black PM would be highly promoted!

I think it highly likely that the UK will one day have a black or mixed race Prime Minister.

I think we will probably have an Asian Priminister within the next 20 years. This is just a prediction.
I think that institutional racism is on its way out. When I think how we were in the 1970s I realise how things can change in 30 odd years.

Sharon - just think back to some of the TV programs of the 60s & 70s; Love Thy Neighbour, Curry And Chips, Q7 (Asian Dalek wanting to put granny in the curry), Marty Feldman, even The Goodies (Graham Garden blacked up with bone through nose saying "Where am de white women") & Month Python.

I think 20 years is a bit soon. That's possibly only 4-5 elections away.

I think, in Britain, people are less racist towards Asian British than they are to people of African or Jamaican Heritage. I've picked this up from talking to teachers and children. Lots of people refer to the characters on 'Goodness Gracious Me' and approve of their ability to fit in with our culture whilst keeping their own. They don't feel this way towards British African or Jamaican communities and people. This may be a wrong judgement but I still think that an Asian is more likely to be the first black priminister. I maybe wrong. 20 years was possibly just wishful thinking but I think it is possible. Second prediction is that they will be conservative!!!!!

Strangely enough I've found the opposite; that blacks fit in better than Asians - especially Asian Muslims. In any city you will find groups of black and white youths, but not many black & Asian, white & Asian or all 3 ethnicities together. Even here in Banbury the Asians keep very much to themselves while the blacks integrate.
I've just asked Sandra & her brother & they agree with me.

will or can have their equivalent of Barack Obama as a PM and so far there is no one relevant yet !!
But I hope there will be one day.

HI, Don that was a sort of rhetorical question as the only honest politicians do not really exist. With the odd exception p'raps.

I think she means a charismatic and able black politician. They seem to be the ones that get the top job. Most PMs seem to come from out of nowhere so watch this space.
If you are after clever then you will find that out of all the religions Muslims are the most likely to get a degree. So a black, Muslim, charismatic, able person that is not in politics at the moment. Any takers? I'm relying on you.

rhade, why do you think what i wrote was racist? I find it strange that you thought that was racist, but have no problem with the image i posted. Both were (intended) to be humerous, afterall, isn't "knocking" the french a british passtime?
Would it not have been better to ask me if i intended it to sound racist or for clarification on what i wrote? Now, if this was being discussed with a frenchman and he thought i was being racist, we would possibly be sat around a large table drinking wine, our voices would be ever so slightly raised and we would begin eating some cheese. The passionate frenchman would by now be throwing his hands up in the air. No not in a gesture to his frustration, but the typical action of a cheese eating, surrender monkey!
