Title: Why doesn't my mouse scroll?
Post by: Carolyn on 18/06/2009 14:05:18
Out of the blue my mouse has stopped scrolling up and down.  The only way I can go up and down on a page is to use the little up & down thingy to the right of my screen.  My mouse has done this once or twice and then just started back, so I'm wondering if maybe I accidentally clicked on something that caused this to happen.  I'm lazy and don't want to be bothered with the up and down thingy to the right of my screen.  Help!!!  What can I do to make my mouse work again.

Published in London 1744 Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book contained the well known nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock. Ewe are fully aware that this involves the vertical scrolling of a mouse up and then down a clock.

As ewe are also aware that this would happen at 1 'o' clock twice a day. lets face it, the mouse is well and truly fed up and has invited those ertswhile little beings known as Mousey-Scrolly-Fairies to spread a little mousey-magicky-scrolly-dust and thus enable it to be free from going up and down for a while.

Do not fret. This will pass.  Mousey-magicky-scrolly-dust is at best just a temporary measure and normal service should be resumed fairly soon.

If this fails there is chant that can be recited but it involves standing in a field with one leg in a bucket and the other rammed up a sleeping cows backside....one must also wear a handkerchief atop your head and have three snails stuck vertically on the nape of your neck.

The chant goes thus:

Oh Arse of Cow and Bucket Leg
With kerchief adorn and snails upon neck
I release my mouse from woe and ills all
So that I may enjoy the vertical scroll

Cite this three times whilst turning and ending with a cartwheeling pirouette and all should be fine.

Glad I could help

If you are using windows vista this is how to check if your mouse is OK ...

At the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious ...
check the usb plug is properly inserted, and if it is a wireless mouse try new batteries.

If the problem persists with other mice then it could be a driver problem.

Is your mouse optical or does it have a ball?

Scrollbar = "up & down thingy"
Scroll track (bit behind it)
arrow button = knob

Did you know if you comprehend "acceleration formula distance/time/time " you can run/operate one of these?

Thank you Neil.  I tried your fail safe method, but unfortunately the only thing it accomplished was loud laughter from my neighbors.

Thank you RD, Lee and Nicephotog.  The mouse I'm referring to is the one that is built into my laptop.  It doesn't have batteries or balls.

I rebooted and it started working again.

....and I think up and down thingy sounds better than scroll bar. [;D] [;D]

I followed your instructions to the letter.  Next time my mouse doesn't work and I have to resort to using the up and down thingy I'll try it again.

Dell inspiron 1501 AMD sempron mobile 1.8ghz Windows Vista Basic 32bit

Looking at the Dell site (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WLH&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=) the touchpad driver for the Dell 1501 was last updated in January 2007, and the BIOS in December 2007.

Vista and Dell both have self-diagnostic programmes which should tell you if your hardware is faulty.

There is an option where the touch-pad is disabled if a USB mouse is plugged in , which could explain your non-functioning touch pad,
(this option can be unselected by unchecking the corresponding tick box)...
