Blame it on celebrity culture.

Ever since Dr Seuss and T S Eliot, cats have been trying to emulate the Cat in a Hat or Jennyanydots in the hope of being immortalised in poetry. Knowing that Facebook and cute animal TV video shows are full of cats in boxes, they attempt to climb on the cardboard bandwagon.

It's a case of faute de miaou as the only other things that cats do (bringing dead things into the kitchen, licking their arses, or getting run over by cars) are even less appealing.

Maybe because they are semi-domesticated ambush hunters, and a cardboard box seems like a good place to hide until some potential prey wanders past - like a piece of string dragging along the floor, or a laser pointer shining on the wall?
