RSI
«

I got RSI in my right wrist several years ago as a result of frantically finishing my PhD lab work - it was so bad I couldn't use my right arm at all for a week (more haste, less speed is certainly true).
I've had mild pain and stiffness ever since, but its been getting worse lately, really painful at times, right up to the elbow. also my wrist clicks constantly - it feels stiff so I rotate it and it cracks, over and over and over again. it won't stop! and it never feels better for than a millisecond after doing it. I can also feel a bit of a lump there.
my question is - Is it worth going to see a doc? I've always assumed nothing can be done about RSI, so there was no point.
hope someone can give me some advice, thanks.

Fishy,
You need to make sure it's really RSI. Sounds like it could be a cartilage problem, possibly a TFCC tear, which is cartilage between the small bones of the hand. Don't know what's available in the UK. Here you would see a hand doctor. And not just any hand doctor. There are ortho hand docs, neuro hand docs, and plastic hand docs. Go to a plastic one, cause they can use all kinds of mini anchors and repair the hand for better mobility. The ortho guys just want to fuse everything. You need a triple sine arthorogram, nerve conduction studies, and an MRI of the hand for a good diagnosis. A strain injury should heal with rest, possibly recur with over use, and shouldn't be causing the clicking or a lump. Don't have anything to go on for the lump, so is it movable, like fluid? Could be a ganglion. Do you play a musical instrument? There is another syndrome known as musician's dystonia that might apply too, but I think probably not. It sounds to me more like a surgical problem.

blimey! thanks for that.
the lump is solid and hard, and immobile. without jumping to conclusions it feels like a wrist bone in the wrong place! Its not there right now though, and it doesnt hurt really at the moment either. the reason i thought it was RSI is because it generally hurts after I've been using my hand, especially driving or at work. I don't play a musical instrument either.
I have to go see the nurse in a few weeks, so maybe I'll talk to her about it - if she thinks a doctor needs to see it the nurse can usually speed things up a bit.

Good luck. A ganglion wouldn't come and go like that. Would definitely get the work up. It's more than just a strain.

You said nothing can be done???
Simply look at your problem like I did.
I saw pressure occured underneath my fore-arm,so I took a greater rest place(bigger table).
Afterwards to avoid my wrist to be in ...hyperextension(upside)I bought a wrist brace (there exists also a thumb brace for...de Quervain:call it a tendinitis of your thumb.this is the so called Nintendo-thumb[^]).
The one I wanted simply lifted my wrist to neutral position. An integrated "flexible"(like all employees should be?[
])splint above
my hand and displacable Ergobeads underneath to avoid pressure sores.
Did look very fancy, could write with it,making calls and just had to pay attention not to work too long ...since I didn't have my problems any more.
As I can now wire Euros through the IBAN banking system, this medical website explained to my banker(!)that he should wire it at "domestic" rate.Oh my God,he was pleased...Looked a little bit like [
)].
I "lost" only the electronic conversion from Pounds to Euros(didn't actually take up the money. Finally this is cheaper than risking to give credit card information.
I even got it delivered at the transport cost I asked for:normal mail.[
]
The website for those who could be interested(and hope it can help you somehow): newbielink:http://www.freewebs.com/wrist_brace/
[nonactive]
Have also a look on your bankers face and see if he/she was also looking like [

I've got to admit, I've not yet seen a doc - I asked the nurse last time I was in, and she said I should make an appointment, but I've been so busy at work (making it worse probably) that I havn't had the time. I've got a plethora of doc's/dentists etc appointments to make in feb, so I should probably take the day off and visit every healthcare professional on my list on this day.
