Title: Is there sound on Mars?
Post by: Atomic-S on 01/10/2015 04:48:54
Were you to stand on Mars (your space suit having a good acoustical interface with the environment), what, if anything, would you hear? Is there any natural source of sound? Is the atmosphere even capable of carrying sound we could hear?

Atmospheric density is about 1% of what we are used to so sound attenuation would be very high.

With low air pressure, you lose high frequencies first. Low frequencies remain.

There are plenty of wind gusts on Mars - just see the massive dust storms on Mars (or watch Matt Damon in "The Martian" - although I think they overdo the dust devils a bit...).
