The simplest evidence that the heliosphere must be distorted comes from Voyager 2, flying south of the solar system's equator. The probe has started to feel the effects of the termination shock, where the solar wind, speeding away from the sun at 1.6 million kilometres per hour, slams into the slower interstellar wind. For more than two years before Voyager 1 passed out of the heliosphere, its instruments detected energetic particles that appeared to be coming from the termination shock. Now Robert Decker of Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Maryland, reports that Voyager 2 is picking up similar particles.

Forgetting dark matter what could cause this distortion in the boundary of the solar system,I know the IRAS satellite did a full microwave survey of the local and distant universe and found no evidence of a failed star local to our solar system ,but could it have missed something could a previously undetected body in the helioshere like a failed or dead star cause this.

An intrstellaer magnetic field implies that the galaxy has its own magnetic field. I cannot remember is the solar plane is simi-coincident with the galactic plane but a slight variation would produce a non-symetrical heliosphere.

The track of the milky way follows the galactic plane and this is very different from the track of the ecliptic which is the solar plane
