A speculative idea on the nature of the universe. Our three dimensional universe is expanding because another dimension is leaking in. The 'leak holes' are at the interface of our universe and the external dimension(s). These leak holes are what we perceive as matter. The rate of 'leakage' determines our perception of time. In other words it may be more appropriate to consider dt/dx as explaining the flow of time. The observed accelerated expansion may indicate the leakage is slowing, causing things to appear to move faster in the past.
These holes exist at the interface and therefore matter is not within space but on its surface. This may account for uncertainty in position. Also these holes should have two sides, intake and discharge. This may account for positive and negative charge.

Michio Kaku (Hyperspace. 1999) discusses how hyperspace theory introduces the idea of a higher dimensional precursor of our Universe.
“Introducing higher dimensions may be essential for prying loose the secrets of creation. According to this theory, before the Big Bang, our cosmos was actually a perfect ten-dimensional universe, a world where interdimensional travel was possible. However, this ten-dimensional world was unstable, and eventually it “cracked” in two, creating two separate universes: a four- and a six-dimensional universe. The universe in which we live was born in that cosmic cataclysm. Our four-dimensional universe expanded explosively, while our twin six-dimensional universe contracted violently, until it shrank to almost infinitesimal size. This would explain the origin of the Big Bang. If correct, this theory demonstrates that the rapid expansion of the universe was just a rather minor aftershock of a much greater cataclysmic event, the cracking of space and time itself. The energy which drives the observed expansion of the universe is then found in the collapse of ten-dimensional space and time. According to the theory, the distant stars and galaxies are receding from us at astronomical speeds because of the original collapse of ten-dimensional space and time.”
This doesn’t seem to be quite what you are suggesting, but reference to it might keep your idea from being shunted into new theories - or not. [:)]

If the ten dimensional cosmos was so unstable how did it come to exist in the first place? If instead it was stable what brought about its instability? Isn't a singularity just simpler?

Very good questions, Jeffrey. I think MK's idea is a good example of "fairytale physics", but so is a singularity, at least in most interpretations.
