Title: Americans
Post by: qpan on 11/05/2004 16:39:37
Just wondering how entirely isolated you guys in the US are...

How many of you guys know that there is a place in the UK called Cambridge?

Just that when i talked to an american, and he asked me where i was, i told him and got a suprised reaction from him that there was another Cambridge in the world other than the one where MIT is and the one in Ontario.

Is he just very ignorant, or is the US really that isolated from the rest of the world?

I am living there are the moment, i am english.

A large proportion of the people here really don't have a clue, and they think that this place is the best thing since sliced bread and that they are always right, and that they are free... which is laughable because some of the laws/policing/govn. etc are just insane here. They like to have opinions on everything without knowing/experience what they are talking about.

I have met some really cool people here who I am proud to call my friends though, and where i am is a nice enough place to live.

To answer the question: In my opinion they are isolated, but by their own doing.

Being a native of the US, I hate to say this, but I agree with Dan.  In fact, most people probably don't know where Cambridge Mass.  (and MIT) is located, let alone the "real" Cambridge in the UK.  Further, most people in the USA don't know where most of their own states are.  I live in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri.  It is located on the western edge of Missouri, about 200 miles northof the Arkansas border.  I've met many people here who don't know where Arkansas is located.  And that is a state that borders their own. Go figure.

People here think they are free because that's what they are told all the time.  The few who differ with that opinion are labeled (and usually REALLY are) lunatics and/or terrorists.  And, yes everyone has an opinion, usually derived from one factoid they heard somewhere on TV.

Personally, I fall into the same traps though I try to avoid them.  I don't watch TV at all, so that helps (or it just makes me more ignorant I'm not sure which).  I try to keep an open mind and find other sources, but usually I end up just wishing I could be a hermit somewhere.  Then I could be labeled a lunatic with the other non-believers.

I do know about Cambridge in the UK and in Mass., but not the one in Ontario.  I do believe that some of the laws/policing/government are insane, but I don't have a good comparison to anywhere else.  Can anyone honestly say the UK is better?  Anywhere?

I've been to the US and i must say i loved it - went to San Francisco, LA and the rest of California and also Las Vegas. Stuff is so cheap, weather is great and surroundings are beautiful too, so California is a really great place. I think i'd love to live there in the future.

However, the UK is nice and quiet (which is both a pro and con- especially in Cambridge, which is exceedingly quiet!). Also, i don't know why, but i prefer the English accent to the american one (especially during lectures- i found it really hard to keep awake during maths lectures when this american guy was lecturing - not sure whether it was the content, person or accent though).

I'm not sure i could cope with the strange laws in the US, such as ones which allow presidential candidates with the fewer votes to become president. And no drinking before 21 (in some states)!

Also, let me share a story with you. In Cambridge, there is a fantastic and ancient Chapel call King's College Chapel. (see http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/chapel/ ).

Apparently, during a tour of this Chapel, an American lady said the tour guide, "Wow, what an amazing Chapel - it must be pre-war right?"
To which the tour guide replied, "Madame. Its pre-america."

I am an American living in Cambridge UK.  Americans are pretty clueless, I must say.  We are definitely fed the nonsense that we are the greatest people in the world.  Interesting considering that the US is an immigrant nation and that most of its flavor derives from ethnic and international diversity.

No offense to the majority of lovely British folk I have met, but I must say the British can be pretty close-minded as well.  I have received an apalling amount of negativity and rudeness in my years in the UK because I am American, including one nice bloke that threatened to stick a fist down my (British) husband's throat if he ever 'came in here again with an American'.

Understandably, other nations are antagonistic towards America, but they mistake decisions made by the government as representing the desires of the American people.  Most Americans are peace-loving, cheerful, generous people.  We just have a stupid way of electing officials.

One story about American cluelessness though because it's just so comical.  I had a friend who worked in one of the tourist-y shops next to Edinburgh Castle who loved to regale me with stupid things people said.  One American women came in and complimented the Scottish for having such great town planning skills.  She was very impressed by the thoughtfulness of building the castle right next to the rail station.

Dalya....on behalf of all us Brits who love Americans....glad you have not given up on us yet.......fortunately I have been to the States quite a few times and one minute I am touched by American generosity and kindness in spirit and the next thing I have to stand back at trying to comprehend what I'm hearing !!!...

There are times when I shudder that these people hav the right to vote !!(same applies to here in the UK too)....but I knew one person who thought Wales was part of England...and that England was the Capital of Britain...and  someone said that we all eat squirrels and badgers.....I remember popping into a drug store and the guy behind the counter thought I must know Prince Charles !!!...one thing I do know is that as a brit....I have always and I mean always been treated with warmth and friendship (despite the  cluelessness)........there was also one guy who wanted me to try and get Paul McCartney to come and play a concert in his home town !!

To be honest, I'm sure we'll find the same situation in all countries, but perhaps it just seems more prevalent in the US.........

Oh...yes that reminds me....when Reagan popped over to see Maggie Thatcher, I remember his wife (Nancy eh ?) being interviewed at how she enjoyed meeting our King and Queen !!!*sigh*

yes qpan.... he IS just very ignorant (just like 99% of all Americans (and 97% of the world population)

I am proud to say that when I think Cambrige, the one in the UK is the first that comes to mind.  However, there are a few facts about the UK that have been mentioned in this thread that people seem appauled that some Americans didn't know that I would expect the general public to be aware of.  Remember there are like 200 some odd countries in the world we can't knwo every little in and out of every one.  there are some countries that i don't even know where they are (I'm sure that same goes for everyone in here) don't you think that the people in those countries would be shocked to find that out?  Even not knowing where cambridge is.... how many of you in here can tell me a major/prestigous university in china off the top of your head?  That country comprises one sixth of the world population if there's any place we should all have knowledge of it would be that but I doubt many people do.
So while I agree that most americans are completely ignornat to the world around them, i think we're getting a little cairried away about how we are judging that.

We all have our faults.

We Canadians are so incredibly apathetic as a whole the we keep voting in lawyers from Quebec for our Prime Minister.  Like the first one didn't screw us over QUITE enough.  Is everyone aware of the latest scandal?  Apparently Sheila Fraser, the auditor general, is looking for $250,000,000 that went AWOL while Cretien was in office.

British people tend to be stiff upper lip and stiff everything else.

Americans don't even have a clear picture of themselves, so how can they know anyone else?  Oprah Winfrey has addressed this, so expect to see some changes.  When I was in Amsterdam a fat American with a southern drawl asked if Canada was "some remote island far north of our great country".  I told him "yeah, it's the place you get all your natural resources from".  He asked where I taught school, and I let him know that class was over (my exact words would only be deleted).

(And without looking up too!)

But to be honest, i don't count as your average english joe, being born in China and all (although i am virtually english- if you don't count the first 5 years of my life which i spent in China, and my thousands of years of Chinese heritage!).

As an American, there's one thought that scares me most:  I think about how stupid the average person is, then realize that 50% of the population is even worse. [xx(]

As a country, we tend to be pretty ignorant of other cultures, but that's pretty much the way we're brought up.  Only the open-minded and educated get out of that rut.  It's funny how a country whose success is founded on immigration can be so xenophobic.

Personally, I'd love to move to the UK or Australia, but I hear that it's not so easy to get citizenship or even a long-term work visa as an American unless you have corporate sponsorship.  (which i will never do again, I'm staying in academia, thank you very much)

I logged on today to find a debate about Americans that, for once, I didn't start (little dig at Bezoar there [;)]).

I do find it ironic that Americans make a point of telling the world how 'free' they are, and then have laws banning abortions, work the longest hours, have the least holidays, are the most politically-correct, do the longest PhDs (included for Jay's sake !), stomach some of the highest fees for their education, get told that they cannot teach evolution in some places, have ridiculous speed limits, and pay a lot of tax compared with most of the western world...

...slaves to 'freedom' more like.

It's only when I visit places like the US (and Japan) that I realise how lucky we still are to live in the UK where life is still relatively fun and uncontrolled.

That said, the Americans I've seen at conferences are usually very business-minded, and are usually very good writers and communicators, even if they can't spell properly [;)]

Chris, we don't really have laws banning abortions.  It's legal here until the 15th week or pregnancy or so.  (though it may not be if the Republicans stay in office another 4 years)

However thanks to the Republicans, we also pay less taxes than most of the Western world... especially those of us with high income.  Your average person making 6 figures in the US is going to end up paying out less than 30% in taxes if they're smart about it and know what to write off and where to put their money.  From what I hear in countries that have a more socialist tinge to them, someone in that income category will pay a much higher percentage.  Not that I think it's a good thing, the burden of taxation should be on the wealthy.

The rest of your points are perfectly valid, of course, for a good portion of the population.  We're chock full of barely literate, over-priveleged, arrogant hypocrites.  If you don't judge us unduly, I'll try not to think of you Brits as stuffy, snooty, and sexually ambiguous.

I can't add much to this thread, but it sure is good entertainment!

I find that I'm agreeing with almost everything that is said here (almost).  And I wonder if that is good or bad.  I guess what it comes down to is that the US is a very big and very diverse place that can't really be neatly categorized any which way.  Same for the UK and Austrailia and most other countries.

Although most things you said in your post (Friends, Burger King etc.) I hate ! Maybe just because it's not my culture, I suppose. I think Friends is the most idiotic  and un-funny program ever put on television (except some japanese game shows which are idiotic but funny because they're idiotic) and Burger King, Mc Donald's etc are disgusting. There's often jokes made here about people that eat at Mc Donald's ... also, american culture is invading all the other countries' cultures ! There's too many american brand names, products and shops here.  I don't want Australia (or France) to lose its identity. (although something that's cool is the huge number of Ripcurl and Quicksilver and the other Australian surfing branded things that you see in France !!!!!! ) America's ideas are sort of producing things for the public no matter what the cost and making money. America does produce a variety of films and music, which I suppose is a good point. Most people like American films and music.

As for Australian beer, go Bundaburg Rum, that's really famous. (at least in Australia, I don't know if it's famous over there)

Good point Neil.  I think every country and culture has it's good and bad points.  If we can focus on the good in each, we all stand to learn and benefit.

Recently in Canada I have observed Native Canadians making strides toward integrating their culture into general society (or vice versa), while maintaining and enhancing their culture and knowledge base.  I applaud this magnanimous spirit, especially in light of the fact that over the last hundred years or so Natives have been terribly abused, denigrated and almost decimated.  It's a fantastic healing to let go of an angry and painful past, do an about face, and move forward with optimism.

Q:...How many of you guys know that there is a place in the UK called Cambridge?...

A: I don't think anybody has that answer, but I do think the fraction of the population who knows any serious amount of geography is declining. Geography is no longer taught in out schools. It was bundled with history, and became "social studies". Geography lost. Most school kids don't know where Michigan is, never mind Cambridge, MA. Cambridge, UK only has a chance if it's in the next Harry Potter movie.

Q:...Is he just very ignorant, or is the US really that isolated from the rest of the world?

A: Yes. The US is a great nation. I will (probably not) be the first US citizen to tell you that. There is also a great amount of isolationism in this country. The US is, unfortunately, NOT isolated from the rest of the world, but most US citizens believe they would be happier if it were. The the US's ignorance of most other world cultures stems from an indifference to those cultures.

OK, OK, so we're ignorant, and isolated, but we have great food.  And Chris, if you were living here as a doctor, you'd have a much better life, be making more money, be able to take off work whenever you wanted, and could pretty much have a job anywhere with a six figure income.  And you could teach here too, and think of all the ignorant students who need you!!!!!!

It is a crying shame that there is very rarely anywhere on this planet where the 'natives' of the land they inhabit, in some way shape or form have not been imposed upon in one way or another.....I can only speculate that somewhere only the remotest tribes in extreme isolated location may still remain untouched......and I would presume that won't last forever

What about the UK and other parts of europe.  Other than a lot of internal invasions, they have been pretty much left to their own devices haven't they? [:D]

Some of the best ales are made right here in little old Adelaide. Coopers Pale Ale - alot of people are put off by the floaties (sediment) but it is a great brew.
Coopers Sparkling Ale - nice and clear with a nice punch
Coopers Dark Ale - This is my winter beer for some reason. Very nice but watchout for the hang over can be very nasty!
Coopers Vintage - a stronger very fruity beer only made in limited amounts each year. Not to eveybodies liking

Could go on for ages but they are a few of my favourites. Some of the interstate beers would have to be Crown Larger, James Boags..eh there's plenty.

ech!!! no!  while I will admit that the majority of the music I listen to and most of the films I watch are american thats simply a matter of odds due to the amount of both that we turn out every year and the lack of availability (especially in films) of anything from elsewhere!  On the whole if you look at ratio of good stuff to crap put out, american music/films suck!  (which stands to resaon given our lack of culture, and over abundance of apathy).  The brits really know how to churn out good music, I just wish they were a bigger country so they made more of it.  The aussies, and cannucs have made great strides on this fromt lateley as well.  As for films, its tough to get anything non-american these days, but I've always had a ting for German Cinema!

Thanks Justy....I have to say I agree with you about the music and films stuff !!..though we're such a small island ...the stuff we produce over here is rather good and eclectic. There are some quintessentially 'English'/'British' bands that due to the 'sound' of their music just will not 'travel' across the pond to the states and further afield...and it has always been difficult for non american bands to make it in the states !!...you guys are extremely patriotic towards your own brands of entertainment(that's not a criticism by the way, that's just the way it is).....but we are a little creative pot here in the UK!!..The films we produce I think are rather good too....(usually with American funds)....we just don't have the industry(or the budget) like you guys...but I would have to say (even noting your comments) that in my list of best films, they are all American...so thahks for that.

I second oldman's endorsement of Cooper's Pale Ale. It's become my favourite beer since I came to Oz. A guy in Alice Springs got me into it when I was up there last month. Haven;t drunk much else since !

The annoying thing is that I can't take it home with me (in appreciable quantities anyway !)

It's true.  Almost all accents are sexy to American women.  British and French are probably the most beloved.  I think Scottish is the best.  The sad thing about living in the UK is you get used to the accent and can't drool over it constantly.  And then when you hear the American accent you drone on and say, 'Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh my gawddddddddddddd!  I don't REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY sound like that, do I?'  (Yes, you do).

Also, the facts that people don't know may be embarrassing, like which kangaroo Prince Charles rode to get to Paul McCartney's concert etc.  However, what's more embarrassing I think is when people lack basic skills like calculating in their heads what 11 plus 24 is, as so often happens on British TV quizzes (not that I watch them too often).

Crikey, I go away for a week and you've been busy running down the Americans and commenting on one of the finest beers (Coopers) available in the world. Considering the cradle of the human race was in Africa, we're all immigrants in one form or another. It's just how long we've been here. I've been in Australia my whole life, and my family roots have been here for a number of generations. That makes me as much Aussie as any Aborigine currently living doesn't it? My son has half my genes and half his mother's (she's a Maori), but he is also an Aussie.
Also, Americans are great! Any race that is prepared to invest trillions of hard earned dollars and many lives of the younger generation to protect basic human rights in another country is OK by me. There is the odd loony in any general population, and I guess that the more people there are in that population, the more wierdos there are. In my travels, I haven't found any race very different (apart from minor external and language variations). We are all kind, friendly and hospitable. We are all part of the human race! Out of the 5 or 6 billion of us currently around, maybe a couple of thousand are causing unnecessary instability. The rest of us are just doing our thing and getting on with life.

C'mon guys, you make me blush. I only wrote what everyone already knows. When you look past the politics and the cr@p spewed out by the media in all it's forms, and get down to an individual level, most people just want the same things. Laughter, enough stuff to live, friends, family, not too many worries and lots and lots of sex and beer. Well, maybe not everyone (particularly Neil) wants beer.

It's still undecided and I haven't been around to chase it up. I'll see what I can find out. I've been trying to arrange it for early July. It means I've got to go to the pub (damn), so I'll try and get down there tonight. The main problem is the bloke that arranges the trips has normally stumbled home by the time I finish work. Nope, I don't drink either.  I used to, but most commercial beer and wine gives me a raging headache before I get to the bottom of the glass.  Hard liquor is an open invitation for candida.  No fun, so I just don't bother.  Like you, I don't need booze to behave ridiculously and have a good time.

I can't say I don't drink, but the six pack I bought last summer still has 4 in it.  I enjoy a beer or glass of wine once in a while, but usually it's too expensive and too much hassle to bother with.  And then I forget I even have any at home.

I used to love Viz but it's definitely gone off the boil. It used to make me cry with laughter, now it just elicits the odd titter or smirk. Some of the Roger's Profanisaurus entries are great - Gashcard and Hairy chequebook are good examples (these are the preferred means of payment for Glandlords and minicab drivers!).

In the cartoons themselves the odd gem still pops up (fnar fnar) but since they sold out it's really gone downhill. That said, there was a brilliant fat slags last summer. They had a barbecue, made the fire with old tyres, cooked condemed meat from a dodgy dog-food slaughter house, and then got the ****s for a month.

As you might have guessed, Finbarr Saunders was my all-time favourite character. There was one priceless edition in which he goes to visit Mr. Gimlett in hospital. It's full of lines like "that chap in the bed over there had an accident on an oil rig...they had to get the chopper out for the rescue...it took them nearly 45 minutes to bring him off". Followed by "that chap in the bed over there has gone home...they always change the sheets when there's been a discharge" plus the all time classic "I'd love to get my hands on that lovely pear on that woman's chest" (pointing to an item of fruit on another patients bedside locker)...etc etc

Finbarr Saunders still exists and still makes appearences,he is one of my favourites too, and Spoilt Bastard also.....I have to agree that it's certainly not the same mag it used to be, but I also wonder if that is because of the change in our years Chris not just the change of VIZs' strips.......You should pick up a recent copy....Have you seen Eight Ace  Chris ?...that's my current favourite, and The Drunken Bakers are virtually surreal......It still holds enough interest for me to be a loyal subscriber !!..and besides....not only does it make good toilet reading but my eight year old daughter loves it too !!![:D]

I don't mind PROPER cats, and ones that don't ask you to fuss them and then bite and scratch you a few minutes later because they feel like it! Upon getting a cat i would be very fussy, no fur balls and a decent colour. I like black cats myself, not a big fan of gingers...

My family has had a history of dogs, so thats about 16 years of barking.  You'd think after that long it wouldnt bother you as much......WRONG.  I cant stand dogs continuous barking at nonexistant objects.  Well I guess you could say I like cats then, unless they start barking to.

That's a hard question, Neil. I've never owned a cat, but there is many that live around my area. I have no desire to harm them, but it doesn't bother me if they are killed by a dog or car. They decimate local wildlife, destroy my garden, cr@p in my son's sandpit and steal my dogs' food. Feral cats in Australia are one of the major destroyers of local fauna. They upset the delicate balance in most environments, roaming free in the nights, breeding and killing while their lazy arse owners sleep without care. They ate my homework, created havoc on our public transport, are responsible for the drought, started the war in Iraq and crashed my computer. Contrary to what most people will try and tell you, global warming is caused by cat farts not those lovely bovines.

"I don't mind PROPER cats"- what the hell does that mean, Rich? Are you getting a panther? You clearly don't like lions and tigers.

Dogs that bark constantly at non-existent objects and cats that expect attention and then bite or scratch as repayment make really good target practice.  Small caliber high velocity ammo is better than the sub-sonic stuff.

Geez, you boys should try to get on better. You'll both be pleased to hear that we had our replacement fishing trip last Saturday. It was one of the best days we have had yet. Nothing to do with me getting biggest fish, again. This time it was a 62cm king fish. Mmmmm. I ate it ( with some help) on Sunday and Monday. Mmmmm. We caught a total of about 43 fish. Apart from the king fish, we caught one good sized rock cod and about 20 of each morwong and leather jacket. We were fishing in about 100 metres, approx. 10 kms from the coast. The day was warm and sunny with a 1/2 metre choppy swell and a slight breeze. We also had a minke whale circle us for about 20 minutes and we saw a humpback about 50 metres away later in the day.

Morwong is sometimes referred to as deep sea bream. The flesh is white with only a few bones. We peel the skin from the leather jacket when we clean them and cut off the barbs. The flesh is also white and bone free. They both have a different taste and different textured flesh and are both good eating. They both make good bone free fillets, which is important for the kids. Out of these two, I prefer the leather jacket. I prefer king fish over these, then snapper, then barramundi would be my favourite (from what I've tried). Unfortunately, we wont catch barramundi anytime soon offshore Sydney.

I'm not too crazy about cats either. I've had friends with cats and they just give me the creeps. If you sit in the floor long enough, they will inevitably put their "pucker" right in your face! I don't want to see that! I wanna put a pencil in it! They beg you to pet 'em and rub all over you and when they're tired of it, they claw the hell out of you. They try to trip you when you're going down stairs. Hell, I'm convinced that if a dog owner died, their loyal friend would bark for help and if a cat owner died...the cat would eat them!I just don't trust them.

Are we talking about cats or my ex? I got lost for a sec.

Cats domesticated themselves! How shifty is that?! Coniving, manipulative, selfish, owner-eating weazel-esque varmints!

As an American, I will venture to opine that most of what is said on this thread is pretty accurate. I will add a few criticisms of my fellow citizens in the USA.
-we are overweight and getting more so. You may like our "fast food", but frankly I prefer slow food
-we use more of our fair sure of Planet Earth's petroleum supply, which has led us to conclude that global warming does not exist (so we don't have to feel guilty)
   - yes we are pretty ignorant of the world beyond our borders. President Bush helped convince us to invade Iraq by hinting that it was involved in "terrorism"- which made many of us conclude that Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden are friends (nothing could be farther from the truth of course)
-We are a bit schizo on the topic of freedom. We do not like our government telling us what to do. This is sometimes a bad thing. We had to undergo the September 11 event before we concluded that it is a good idea to search people in airports. We had to undergo Hurricane Katrina before we concluded that there are times that it is okay for the government to evacuate people in front of a killer storm.

I could go on. But I am still here, anyway.

Americans do defy any kind of classification as we come in all sizes and colors. Whole books can and have been written on the subject. So any observations are subject to exceptions.

One observation of a British friend was that Americans are much nicer when they are at home in their own country. There we feel secure and aren't constantly suggesting what is wrong with the country we are visiting.

I saw that for myself with two colleagues I had traveling with me in Germany. We were in a restraunt when they both ordered pizza (familiar). It wasn't the real greasy kind we often get in the states so they started their complaining, then got loud and boisterous trying to push away the strange and different culture that was surrounding them. I just got embarressed.

America does have a lot going for itself. I see a lot of comparisons with the Roman Empire. A vision for the world based on economic trade would be the positive side. You know the negative side. How much longer can it last? Probabily longer than most people think because of Yankee inovation. We roll with the punches and adapt pretty well.

When I thought about this topic, I pictured a set of weighing scales.

I pictured putting all the good stuff on the left hand side - e.g. the simpsons, south park, motown, cohen brothers, charlie kaufman, etc etc etc ...

Then I started putting the bad stuff on the right hand side.  I put on Arnie Schwarzenegger, then George W Bush - but that's as far as I got before the right hand side collapsed under the weight!

Neil

You will find that most of our towns, cities and place names in the uk were used to name places in the US. even the smallest of towns and districts like Norwood, Dulwich, Crystal palace etc have a US equivalent.
Think of a big city in the us and we probably have a place called the same.

And a lot of our places were named after the Dukes and other people of high stature in the UK -America's origin- thanks for that ;-)  (Are there a lot fat people their too?)
The duke of York for example...

Freedom is being able to do what you want to do.  If someone forbids you from doing something you never wanted to do, then it does not impinge upon your freedom.

When you are brought up in an environment, most people learn not to want the things they know they will never have.  The problem arises when someone who is brought up with certain expectations of freedom moves to an environment where those expectations are no longer met.

Just found this old "quiz" that did the rounds at work some time ago, and thought it was appropriate for this topic.

Many apologies in advance to our American colleagues, I know that perpetuating these stereotypes isn't very constructive - but I just thought it was quite funny ...

QUIZ: HOW TO TELL IF YOU'RE AN AMERICAN

1. You decide that the relationship with your partner is over. How do you break the news you are leaving?
(a) Leave a tearful note on the table and slip quietly away
(b) Calmly discuss the reasons with your partner for your decision
(c) Attack them with a chair in front of a rabble of cheering pumped-up inbreds on national television.

2. You and your mates decide to have a game of football in the park.  What do you need to take?
(a) A ball
(b) A ball and 2 coats
(c) A ball, 50 crash helmets, 4 tons of body armour, 20 cheerleaders, a marching sousaphone band with a grand piano on a trolley, and a team of orthopaedic surgeons specialising in spinal injuries.

3. You are driving along a country road when you accidentally run over a rabbit. What do you do?
(a) Stop and see how badly injured it is, taking it to a vet if it is still alive
(b) Carry on driving, but hope it is still alive, or if not, that it died quickly
(c) Strap it across the bonnet of your car and drive home a-hollering and a-whooping and throwing empty Budweiser cans out of the window.

4. You wake up in the morning with a stiff neck after sleeping in an awkward position. What do you do?
(a) Ignore it. It will probably loosen up as the day progresses
(b) Take a couple of aspirins and get on with things.
(c) Take yourself to a prostitute-addicted TV evangelist faith healer in an ill-fitting wig, who will lay his hands on your head whilst screaming about the devil in front of an audience of gibbering rednecks.

5. What do you have for breakfast?
(a) A bowl of Cornflakes, slice of toast and a mug of tea
(b) Glass of orange juice, croissant and a cup of coffee
(c) A bag of donuts with ice cream, a 32 ounce steak with six eggs sunny side-up, fifteen pancakes with maple syrup, ten waffles, five corn dogs and a diet root beer

6. You and your partner decide to take the plunge and get married. What sort of ceremony do you have?
(a) A quiet party with a few friends in a registry office
(b) A church service followed by a traditional reception at a hotel
(c) A minute long mockery at a 24 hour drive-through chapel in Las Vegas, presided over by a transvestite vicar dressed as Elvis.

7. Your 14-year-old son is going through a difficult phase, becoming disruptive at school and reclusive at home. What do you do?
(a) Don't worry. It's just a phase and will pass.
(b) Encourage him to get out more, get involved in team sports or join a youth club.
(c) Take him to an armoury and buy him an arsenal of semi-automatic weapons and enough ammunition to slaughter a small town.

8. You fancy a night in watching something funny on TV. What kind of comedy do you choose?
(a) A sitcom like Fawlty Towers or Father Ted
(b) A sketch show like the Two Ronnie's or the Fast show
(c) A thinly disguised morality play set in a massive lounge where the audience whoop for ten minutes every time an overpaid actor with a superglued grin on his face makes an entrance to deliver a lightweight wisecrack.

9. While getting ready for bed, you stub your toe on your wife's dressing table. What do you do?
(a) Shout and swear a bit, after all, it did hurt
(b) Make a mental note to move the table so it doesn't happen again
(c) Immediately call a hotshot lawyer with an uptown reputation, and sue your wife.

10. There are global concerns about the emissions from cars. Do you:
(a) Introduce incentives to switch to cleaner cars
(b) Invent a new cleaner fuel
(c) Continue to use and invent dirtier cars, ignoring the global concerns about the emissions.

If you answered mostly (a)s and (b)s then you are a normal well balanced individual.
If you answered mostly (c)s - Congratulations!! you are an American.

I know this is an old topic. I did take some offense to it, but also understood some well taken points.[:)] Keep in mind that I mean no offense in my reply, just expressing my feelings![^]

I am an american who knows Squat about Geography, not because I was not taught it, But Because I have never been interested in it.[:D] I live in a small Community called Blue Lake, actually there are three and I am in the middle of the three. The other two are Arcata, and McKinleyville. We are located in Northern California. I could no more tell you where the Uk is located, then the man in the moon, without looking on the globe or a map.[V]

I love my home, I am not Stupid, although I feel I learn more every day! Further more I am 45 years old and Just now getting my College under my belt as I chose to have a Family first![:D]  I am working on my Bacholors degree, slow but sure. I find people from everywhere and every walk of life fascinating and I hate politics, so I try to avoid them.[;)]  I love diversity and culture of all kinds. I have never traveled hardly at all from my place of birth, and the few trips I have taken, I would say were no farther then about 300 miles from home with two possible exceptions.[:)]I have never been out of the states and probably never will given financial restraints. Would love to see the UK some day as well as many other places.[:D] I cannot leave my town without getting lost, Which does not look good for me.[B)] I have a real bad sense of direction. I get lost in the forums, let alone out in the country![:D] It has not been of interest to me to travel untill the last few years as I had no desire really. Now I yearn to travel and I think it is just that I love people and the counties are beautiful from what I have seen in pictures and books and on television. I love ALL PEOPLE, SHORT, TALL, FAT, THIN, GREEN, BLUE, PINK,and PURPLE! I DON"T CARE!

I DO NOT MAKE IT A HABIT TO CRITISIZE PEOPLE FOR NOT BEING UP ON THIER GEOGRAPHY OR EDUCATIONAL SKILLS OR LACK THERE OF,AS I WAS TOLD THAT THIS IMPOLITE!  WHEN I SAW THIS THREAD I DO Say, I HAD TO BITE MY TONGUE AS I DO NOT THINK THIS IS JUST AND AMERICAN PROBLEM![:0]

There have been alot of nice comments here and relative points made, many of which are quite real and valid. But I do take offense that we might all be lumped into this catogory. I am  A teacher of small children and I hope that the skills I bring to them might some day help change something in this world that might could use a little tweaking! WE ARE NONE OF US PERFECT SPECIMENS OF HUMANS,BUT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE? WHAT IS PERFECT ANYWAY? Stereo typing hurts everyone and I am sad to see it[:(].....Karen

I know this is an old topic (but since Karen resurrected it), I think you will have difficulty finding a Chicago in the UK, as it is based on a Native American etymology, and places like St. Loios are French rather than British origin.  There are many others of similar non-English extraction, particularly as you move away from the New England area of the USA.

I think it is a problem that is more prevalent in smaller countries.  You say you have travelled 300 miles, but have never left the USA – I would have great difficulty travelling 300 miles without leaving England, and most likely would even have left the UK.  Ofcourse, there are many people who live in Russia, or China, or India, who might be in exactly the same situation as you.

Ofcourse, putting that in some context, I may have often travelled outside of the UK (in fact, almost every year of my life since my teens, and a few occasions before that), I have actually only left Europe a handful of times.  If terms of physical size, Europe is comparable to the USA.

Nonetheless, the fact that I can travel to places that have a different language and culture to my own is such a small space and time does make me more aware of the variety of cultures and political perspectives that are out there; but there is nonetheless no doubt that I am less aware of an African, or Chinese, perspective on a matter than I might be on a French, German, or Italian perspective.

Wow George, See what I mean by my Geographical abilities, Just amazing that I did not know that the United states and europe are about the same size, or comparable. We have a great deal of culture here, but I must say it seems so different then the places they originate from. I guess when one moves out of ones own surrounding thing and ways of life might change, not always for the better. I am definitely less aware of alot of other perspectives, and welcome them also. By the way I enjoyed your photo,s last week, they were quite beautiful. Most of My concern in the last post was the sterotyping I guess, it tends to bring my emotions out a bit.  I agree with you, that there is a problem, but not isolated to the Americans alone, I see it in many different places.  Like  I said there were many valid points also noted in this thread, and I felt drawn to speak up I guess. Thanks George.

Michael, What age children does your wife teach?  She sounds Like  my kind of lady! I love children and have been working with them since I was a kid myself. I am facsinated by their utter charm and their resilience. They are Truely remarkable! So she likes to shop ehh! Is Blue lake a rural area there or is it a bigger city or subdivision? .....Karen
